Beyond the rumours of more cruise lines banning cruising ducks, there are some issues & complaints from cruise passengers. Are these cruise traveller complaints even justified?

We were on Wonder of the Seas last November (2023) and we were hiding ducks. A staff member asked if we had an extra duck. It wasn't for him, he saves them and if a child that has a disability can't find a duck, he will hide one for that child to find. The is a very special request this staff member made and it was not for himself but for a child he hasn't even met yet, to bring joy to that child's face.

On our last cruise, my cousin was getting married. We hid ducks everywhere! Right after the wedding, we decorated her door with a pair of ducks. Some butthead stole them off the door, so they didn't get them. 😢 This was on Carnival breeze. I've since learned that some people are professional rubber duck hunters. Fine, whatever. But if you're an old fart or a serial cruiser, don't bogart and prevent everyone from the fun. And don't steal door decorations!!!

I took my mother-in-law on an Alaska cruise two years ago. She was in early stages of dementia. I used hiding the ducks as a way to get her involved in some activities. She had such a fun time hiding them. It was a joy to watch her find a good hiding place. We were on an elevator one time when another passenger got on. She had one of the ducks we hid and was so excited about finding it. My mother in law and I just grinned at each other. Such great memories as my mother-in-law has since passed on. Cruise ducks will forever hold a fond memory in my heart.

From my New England cruise last October It’s a thing in case you didn’t know. Hiding rubber ducks on your cruise. Since it is a ship, I thought I would do pirate ducks. This morning at breakfast I put one duck in the buffet between a couple of booths. Within a few minutes the buffet attendant for my section found it. Puzzled, he called his boss over who was equally confused. Another cruiser walked by telling him it was a cruise duck and how lucky he was to find one. His eyes lit up along with huge smile when his boss told him to keep it. Next thing I know he is showing it to other buffet workers and any cruiser who comes by. “What are you going to do with it?” I ask him when he shows it to me. Excitedly he says, I’m going to put it in my cabin!” Somehow, someway always try to make someone smile.

Ive been on ,50 cruises and have only found,1 duck.I was delighted and re-hid it.If you really think they are disease ridden leave them alone.Some people are such miseries.

My mom has actually crocheted ducks for our last cruise. She gave one of the large ones to one of our waiters for his daughter. He was thrilled to have it!!!

Last week when our cabin attendant saw the ducks we brought to hide his eyes lit up!Included in our stash were 3 large Valentine themed ducks. Before we hid them we asked if he wanted one. He was elated! Our world needs us to spread joy. We will continue to do so one duck at a time.

I have also been caught while hiding by one of the cleaning staff and simply put a finger to my lips, reached in my bag and handed them a duck. They gave me the biggest smile which to me was a success story.

There are some cruisers who are pissed that crew take the ducks that are hidden, but they have just as much fun finding them. Many have collections.

I'm not one of those cruisers. As I just hope to bring joy to whoever finds them. I also know that the crew member that I gave the duck left my hidden ones alone as I frequently would do checks on them to see if they were discovered. Wow, people will find anything to complain about. I would think cruise staff who are so far from home would get joy from being able to take them home. If it bothers you, don't participate. But others like it. Doesn't affect others. Just let people enjoy their cruise.

I have no problem with staff finding the ducks. If it brightens their day, what’s the harm. I also hand out chocolate candy to staff, especially those who are those who are around but don’t interact with passengers. I do this the last few days of the cruise. The delight on their faces makes my day.

We found 2 ducks while on a Royal Caribbean cruise this past December. One had a Happy 50th Wedding anniversary greeting, we kept that Duck as we were celebrating our 50th as well. A cute little reminder of our vacation.

Have been on serval cruises now and I paint to clam my mind, it helps me get a handle on all the chaos that can overwhelm me. I paint small 2x2 acrylic paintings of what I see on the ship and the have magnets on the back so I can stick the almost anywhere. I leave them all over and I am surprise how much joy they bring to passengers and crew. Love it when someone figures out it was me that left them as I paint the next batch , a great way to meet people and spread so joy in a never ending joyless world. I hope they never stop me from painting and spending the joy it brings me and the happiness it brings others

My 23 y.o. daughter brought home 2 from her cruise and they are a cute souvenir. I’ve never found one but I think this is a super cute and fun way to bring joy to others. If someone isn’t interested, they can ignore them. I bet the people who hate finding rubber ducks also hate puppies and kittens! 😂

My girlfriend and I were on Oasis of the Seas and we found a cruise duck. We were not searching for one but it brought a smile on to our face and a souvenir to our home that reminds us of the wonderful time we had on our cruise. The practice of the cruise ducks is harmless and if you see one and don’t want it just keep walking and leave it there. Let it bring someone joy and memories.

My grandkids love looking for and finding the hidden ducks. On our last cruise a crew member gave my grandson some tips on where to look for hidden ducks. He then told him to come back later that evening and he would give him a duck that he had found earlier that day. This turned into a daily event, and every evening we would go and find this crew member who would give him a duck that he had found that day. On our previous cruise our room steward gave my three grandkids each a duck that he had found, so the whole duck thing is fun for everyone who wants to participate in it.

We actually observed a young lady finding one of our ducks, and seeing how excited she got "Mom! a duck, a duck, a duck!!!" was a blast. We don't have any problems with staff finding them either. We'll continue to play the game unless some scrooges get it banned.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...😂 I scoot around in my scooter and hide them on RC ships. Sometimes, I'll notice the duck hasn't been found yet, so I ask parents if they would like their young child to "find a duck!". Just spreading cheer from this nearly 70 year old couple!❤

I recently retired from teaching and some parents germ crazy I always had a secret smile since their kids were always sick -as a mom of 3 germs build immunity Thank you John H some folks need a life. I hid ducks for the first time on our last cruise, and was surprised how difficult it is to sneak them into hiding spots without someone else actually seeing. That said, I wound up having staff tell me how much joy it brings them to find one themselves, and consequently hid some in areas where they were more likely to be the ones to find them.

I am 46, and duck hunting is so fun to me. The first time my children and I experienced this, we actually found 30 ducks! Since then, we take the ducks we find and rehide them on our next cruise. If we find a favorite one, we’ll keep it as a souvenir. I love this light-hearted activity that doesn’t involve a screen and gets our family moving!

Something similar: we flew on Christmas day one year and I brought tiny little handmade crocheted animals (amigurumi) and gave them out to all crew at airport and on plane. You’d be amazed to see the joy they brought to grown people fawning over a tiny toy. It was really fun! (I did not offer to TSA to avoid problems)

I've only found one in all our cruises. We had a good chuckle, felt the joy, and left if for another passenger or crew member to enjoy. Cruise ducks are fun and silly and awesome!

On a recent cruise, we left the ducks wherever they were when we spotted them. My wife and I enjoyed watching the little kids search for them and getting so excited when they found them.

The hiding and (hopefully) finding of ducks is innocent and fun. Some of the duck hiders are so creative and even make clothes for the rubber ducks. NO soliciting for business on the duck tag!

We hide a few, but some people do go overboard with the amount they bring to hide. If you're bringing a separate suitcase just for cruise ducks, that's overdoing it.

Why should there be a limit? I just think of all the crew that have never seen or heard of silly rubber ducks taking them back to their own children and the joy they will feel. I had one of the crew give me one. She said they don’t have much room in their cabin. I told her to buy a bunch of magnets and glue them to the ducks and stick them to the ceiling. She liked that idea. I hope she does. A smile is free. We should give them away however we can

I went on a behind the fun tour in the captain, had a whole collection of ducks that guest have brought him, or he has found himself. He took a lot of pride in his collection and it did have a sentimental value to them and I think that’s perfect and OK. I support the crew collecting ducks like anyone else.

After 5 cruises I discovered Cruising Ducks. I had never heard of it before and when I found my first one was immediately hooked. I have another cruise booked this fall and already have my ducks and tags ready to go with me! I have done a lot of research and readings about the ducks since learning of this tradition. I've heard stories from crew members who say their plants suffer the most with people digging into planters and moving branches looking for ducks. Aside from that it seems to be an enjoyable activity for all ages that promotes movement around the ship and general comradery. I don't care who finds my ducks when I hide them. I know many crew enjoy the hunt just as much as the passengers on the ship. I've even met people who deliberately bring ducks for crew members, hiding them in room carts, on serving trays etc. To those that hide the ducks - keep it up! To those who hunt - good luck! And to those who don't care for it, your opinion is respected, but please don't take the fun away from others. Happy hunting!!

I’ve never found a duck, but I did find painted rocks for a convention we were on aboard RCCL. We saw it, took it, smiled about it as we walked away, realized that we didn’t really want to add it to our supply of “stuff” we have to lug home, then put it back where we found it for someone else to enjoy. I think people who have a problem with the ducks should just try that same reaction. Enjoy the game, or simply ignore the game. Any energy spent on being upset about it is really just wasted.

I don't actively look for the ducks, nor do I hide them. I think it's a fun thing, though. I found my first and only duck on an NCL cruise about 2 years ago. I hid it for someone else to find

I love crocheting ducks for my cruises! I enjoy watching people find them and seeing someone smile. We need a little more kindness in this world and sharing joy with others is what cruise ducks are all about.. I have given my duck to a crew member who has been kind and thoughtful to me. I will also just give one to a random child (asking parent permission first). Their faces light up.. isnt that what life is about sharing joy and caring about one another! Keep cruise ducks!!!

I resently was on a Holland America cruise over Christmas. I found a duck and was delighted. I rehid the duck in an area where a child would find it. The cruise had a few children and the joy they expressed when they found them was a joy to see.

I hid ducks on my last cruise. It was fun but I found I much prefer just giving them to kids and staff directly. I even gave some to adults that asked why I had them. It was a great conversation starter.

As far as crew members finding them - well when we have some in our mesh bags and see a crew member eyeing them, we ask if they would like to pick one out. The smiles are just as genuine as when we give a thank you card to a crew member with a little something tucked in.What is the harm? It's like saying I donate to the local charity, but I want to tell who can receive it. As I tell my grandkids, it's not a game if it's not fun.

I was talking to a family friend who has been cruising on Oceana for many years. I gave him some ducks to hide on his last cruise (he is no longer with us). He was so excited to talk about it when he got back. It seems this is not common on the fancier lines. He said people were very excited to find the ducks.

I find cruise ducks to be a cute, harmless and fun tradition. I do not participate, usually just re-hiding ones I come across, but I don't see the problem with them as long as people are not breaking the cruise line's rules. Like a lot of things in life, voluntary activities are not required for those not interested in participating. Now, I have seen crew members collect ducks, and I feel if they are in a public area for someone to find, a crew member is just as entitled to the discovery! 💜🚢

You asked for opinions. As one who plays he game allow me to share some personal experiences over the past couple years. In 2022 & 2023 I sailed nineteen times on different MSC ships. In 2023 I did six b2b's. In 2022 I did seven b2b's, over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday sailings. I like to wear costumes on the ship. I am friends with many crew members. Entertainment staff has invited me onstage with them many times to sing, dance and overall entertain the guests. One way I entertain is to hide ducks. Over the last couple years I have easily handed ut or hid well over five thousand ducks. In 2023, on two different MSC ships I became known as the "Duckman". I loved to hand ducks to the crew. Many times I had Officers and Senior Staff stop me and ask where is their duck. I had guests, many guests stop me. Tell me they heard I was the "Duckman". Some got mad or not too happy when the time came where I had to tell them I ran out. My last cruise I hid almost 500 ducks. Some guests did not want to hunt the ship. They wanted me to hand thm a duck. I have a cruise booked on the NCL Encore. A seven night sailing in December. We disembark a couple days before Christmas. During this cruise I will likely have three collapsible duffle bag type luggage, filled with a Santa outfit and likely over one thousand 2 inch holiday rubber duckies. My goal is to not only hand some to good girls and boys. Hand some to good crew members. And hide the rest. So many kids have called me the "REAL" Santa. Real beard and all. And parents like to take pics, free pics, with their children AND Santa. When kids ask why am I on the ship. Remember this is only a week before Christmas. I reply Santa is on vacation. I say I need rest before Christmas Eve. The SMILES I see, on the kids face, their parents, the crew, officers and even the Ship Captain. These smiles are what brings me JOY. And the Cruise Duck game was created as a way to bring smiles to others. So this is my story. And if anyone is sailing on NCL Encore, Dec 15, 2024. You might see Santa on the ship. And sometimes a jolly old man, with long white hair and a beard. Wearing a tropical shirt. Relaxing on the ship. And hiding or handing out OVER ONE THOUSAND rubber duckies on that one sailing. I'm reminded of a TV show called Fantasy Island. When the plane arrives, MR Rourke says "Smiles Everyone, Smiles". I enjoy dressng as Santa for many decades now and bringing smiles to so many.

I had so much fun preparing my ducks before I went to Norway on HAL’s Rotterdam. I tied a fun fact about The Netherlands and a faux Delft Blue magnet on them.I really didn’t care if crew or passengers would find them😊

I've hidden ducks on my last two cruises. I saw ship's officer's had one of mine on the table between them at some informal meeting. And watched as another crewmember was laughing and showing off one she'd found. I don't care who finds them. Its a tiny bit of fun and games. Life is serious. We all could use a good laugh.

Why are people so controversial? If you don’t like them, just leave them along, don’t touch them. In our many cruises we have only found one. Recently on the Icon, we had a crew of children, just looking for ducks. They had so much fun!

We do the same thing in the RV community where we place plastic frogs on the steps of the RV. Its such a joy to think someone came to your campsite to spread a lil joy. I think the ducks are a great way to spread a positive message and bring someone a lil bot of joy. For parents who think they are “disease riddled” wipe them off with a clorox wipe. Its just a kind gesture in a very mean world right now. Love your channel!!

I have been cruising for over 20 years and I think it is a WONDERFUL idea. I have found a few and left a few. For the life of me I can't see how that can upset anyone. Makes me happy to see one of those cute little ducks. Love them!!! Keep them!!!

We have gone on about 7 cruises and last October we went on Royal for my sons 16th Birthday and he found 2. It was so cute and just added a little extra joy to our trip. We plan to hide some during our next trip in April in join in on the fun.

We have been cruising for many years. I hid my first ducks last August on my first Carnival Cruise with family. After hiding a few I just started leaving them for the bartenders and waitstaff. Even hid some in my own cabin for our cabin steward. They love them. This made them so happy. Heading out on NCL in a few weeks and I will be packing lots of ducks for the staff.

Going on my first cruise this July. I found out about the ducks and my first thought was, oh cute. But I bought a few and will hide them, I’m not sure I will actively hunt for them. But here’s my thought. They are fun! It brings a smile to many faces not only to those who find them but to those who make them and decorate them! And if it brings joy to a crew member the more power to the ducks!!!!

I love seeing ducks around the ship, I saw one placed in a safe area for someone to retrieve, this brought a smile to my face. However, I can see a safety issue arising from where they are placed on the ship, or in an area the duck could fall or be easily dislodged. Speaking as a registered nurse, who has seen a number of broken hips, etc through my lifetime (due to tripping on items), safety is a subject I am passionate about. For example, one pic that was shown in your clip, featured a duck under the stair landing-not a good idea! Think of folks taking a tumble down those stairs due to losing their balance due to a cute little duck. My motto is, if you see something unsafe-do something about it and don't assume someone else will take care of it! If a staff or passenger sees a duck in a precarious location-relocate it and the situation is solved.-Thanks for hearing my stance from a medical point of view.- Diana,RN

On a Hawaiian NCL cruise 2023 my sister found a duck in the hallway near our cabin. I walked right past it. It was so exciting for her finding one!!! She kept it. Btw I’m 71 & she is 63.

On my recent NCL Pearl cruise, I found 2 ducks. I thought it was fun & brought them back to my daughter as a souvenir. They did have a business contact on them but tossed the information. Simple as that! I do wonder if Disney can't make a buck off the ducks, maybe that is why they discourage them?

My family does enjoy the game of hide and seek with the cruise ducks. However, the last cruise we went on, we just handed out the ducks to little children in the piazza. The joy on their faces were worth our effort. And, the parents were approving. Although we have never found any, I would thrill at finding a unique duck and would keep it as a souvenir. As for going overboard, I agree that many take it too far. For a 7 day cruise, I would recommend toting along 7 to 14 ducks for hiding. Those that bring along 200 or more ducks is just getting too carried away. I certainly wouldn't want the duck game to take over my vacation time. In regards to the crew members taking part in the game, kudos. I love it. They receive such little reward as it is for their hard work. We typically make sure our favorite attendants have a unique duck of their own to keep. I even try to do magnets or something small for them to keep in their cabins. I do hope that cruisers who participate in the game will find a balance before it gets to the point of being banned.

I can understand the concern. We were recently on a Royal cruise and observed two children literally digging through the plants in the Central Park area looking for ducks. No parental supervision at all.

I will agree with you that this is very poor behavior, and I also agree that anyone witnessing a child behaving badly should speak with them and tell them to stop. But, their poor behavior should not be reason to stop the fun and joy for others. Simply “see something, say something”. Teach and guide young people with kindness. ❤

We were recently on the NCL Prima and took the behind the scene tour of the ship, and the one and only duck I ever seen was on the Chief Engineers desk in the engine room area. I had no idea what it meant or why it was there, and we have been cruising since 1986 regularly. Then again, I just recently found out what pineapples 🍍 over peoples cabin doors means too. 😱

My grandson's class did a Flat Stanley a few years back. Each child was asked to bring him on an adventure. When it was his turn, he had Flat Stanley help my husband pull up a juniper bush and work in my veggie garden.

On my last cruise I just found out about the rubber duck hiding on the boat and I thought it was fun and how people come together to enjoy this time at sea. I am 47 years old and even my adult children would be all in to be envolved with this fun time. People get out of the way of people having fun and it is also clean fun in a world that is just about me me me quit being self absorbed.

My family and I are planning our first cruise in August. I just recently learned about the ducks, and I thought it looked so fun! My daughter, who will be 11 when we go is super excited about the duck game. I really hope carnival continues to do it. I agree with most everybody else. If you don't like the duck game, just don't play.

We hide 10 to 12 ducks each cruise, mostly in areas designated for kiddos. There’s nothing like seeing their excitement when they find a duck or when you ask if they have found one. It’s harmless fun. And if the crew wishes to participate, the more the merrier.

I’ve found ducks without looking. I just leave it for the littles. I do know of a woman that uses the ducks to advertise her travel agency which I think is wrong. Just hide the duck with a cute saying but please don’t turn it into yet another ad.

One lady staff member tearfully told us she was grateful that someone took notice of her and gave her a gift. She said she would cherish the duck forever and take it on future trips.

We did our first cruise ever in January on the Carnival Celebration. I have 4 kids and didn't know anything about the ducks. Once we found one it became one of the funnest parts of the cruise! We loved it! The perfect side bar game for kids on the cruise!

My granddaughter found 13 ducks on our cruise last august - she had a blast hunting. I hid a dozen on my cruise in November. I found one and brought it home as a souvenir - it had the persons name on it and was Breast Cancer Research themed. When I saw that person leaving a message on our cruise’s Facebook page I thanked them for the duck and took a photo of it on my nightstand. They were thrilled to know how happy it made me. Great memories of the cruise.

I went on a cruise last year. I didn't see any ducks, well hidden! Now I wasn't looking for them. I like the duck idea, fun for the seekers. I've seen vehicles on the road with them all over the dash. I would reside if I had found 1. Sounds like fun to me.

I wish people would be more careful about where they put their ducks. I saw a picture where somebody put it in the track of where an emergency door would go, with the duck there, the emergency door would not close properly.

I hadn't heard of it till now. I love the idea and will look for them on our next cruise. If someone doesn't like or want them, pass them by. If kids find them, rehide them rather than complaining. Some people are "offended" by anything and everything.

I'm sure that parent is also one of those "beige moms". Their poor kids. As for cruise staff, we ran into the sweetest waitress at the pub on RCL Oasis that collected ducks she found we had a few left so we "hid" one specifically for her. We never found any, but we looked! I think they are a cute way to enjoy the cruise and the occasional free souvenir.

We went on our first cruise in Feb 2024 and I was lucky enough to find a duck! I loved hearing the kids say to each other "I'm going on a duck hunt, want to join me?" I personally wasn't searching, I just saw one as I waited for my gluten free pizza to cook! Nice surprise and little momento of our trip.

I did the Disney Norwegian Fjord cruise this past summer and did hide some Viking ducks. I believe the crew did take some but one person in the Facebook cruise did find one and posted. It was a lot of fun!
