Popular KZfaqrs were told to stop filming on their $5200 MSC World Europa cruise. It raises interesting questions when it comes to filming on cruise ships, content creation and the creator economy. What does it all mean. Is this the end of cruisetube? Here's my take.

I like Ben and David's channel. MSC is off the table for me as a result of this. MSC's action really means online reviews of MSC cannot be considered objective because they are probably all paid-for propaganda. Still, there are more than enough passengers for all the cruise lines out there, so MSC won't miss me. MSC can take off, eh! And, I don't mean, "take."

I watched their video last night, and was completely disgusted with MSC. I’ve also seen this ship covered by 4 other KZfaqrs , and they weren’t treated this way. MSC is a hard pass

@@johnnyluck8102I’d be very surprised! That’s not how they are. They were actually invited onboard by MSc previously and turned it down and paid for their trip because they want to offer a fair video and you can’t be impartial if you are a paid for guest. Ironically their video was also very positive up until that point so MSc have done themselves no favours at all because whereas they would have had a positive review to counteract the many negative ones they now have huge negative publicity

Tony I’m so glad you covered this KZfaq story. I just watched Ben and David’s video last night and I’m completely appalled. The interesting part in their video was when they revealed that MSC offered them a free cruise, which they refused and instead paid full fare! I completely trust their reviews because they are fair and honest.

That’s why they ran away and now their viewers and doing their fighting for them- and other KZfaqr are doing the same thing - this will be a warning to other cruise lines to treat travel KZfaqrs like royalty or face the consequences 😢

@@live2skide1 I am sorry but I disagree with you. They were asking to be treated differently. They stated so in their own video. They stated that this was a BUSINESS for them and that they were not on vacation, thus the reason to leave as soon as possible. They were using the cruise line for their own enrichment, potentially at the detriment to other paying passengers. Just because they paid for it doesn't mean that they have the ability to take over the ship and film a short form movie.

I have a interesting point of view on this. I recently cruised with Ben and David. They filmed a lot and were noticeable everywhere they went. We sat close to them at an Aqua show. My kids, family and myself were really excited they were on our ship! My oldest daughter got pictures with them. It never bothered us seeing their camera and being filmed. It was actually the opposite of that. We tried to stay out of their way and not bring a large amount of attention to them. I have followed B&D for about 4 years. They are genuine and truly great at their job. One more thing I can say, I hope cruise ship videos don't go away. They are useful for everyone but more so for a family like mine. I have a special needs daughter who has anxiety really bad. Crowds, new places, and loud noises bother her. She can still cruise because of ship videos. We use them to prepare her for the sites, sounds, and crowds we will have on the ship. We started this when she was 3, we still do it and she is 9. It would been a struggle without ship videos. Thank you for what you do! Keep it up.

I was also on the fence. I noted the many mixed reviews across the internet of MSC standard booking but always liked the look of Yacht Club. After seeing Ben & David’s experience yesterday, I’m absolutely not going to book MSC ever.

Why would they stay when they were there to film and can no longer do that? MSC gave them no reason, just a lot of very Agressive attitude. They no longer felt welcome, their trip was ruined, so they left.

Love Ben & David. I think some guest in the yacht club complained. That happened to me a few weeks ago embarking on the Seashore with my walker. We were directed to the shorter luggage scanning line due to my walker. The woman in front of me turned and asked if I was yacht club because this was a yacht club only line! The crew moved me ahead of her much to her dismay. I said to her with a smile, "I guess today I am!" Some people are not kind or generous.

That happen to me years ago when I broke an ankle hours before getting on the ship it was another cruise line....I just smiled big and said " I don't need special anchor status my daddy ownes the cruise company" Oh Lord it was a hoot...shut them up in a flash!

I agree with you, someone definitely complained and they were told to stop. I would have stopped filming in the Yacht Club but kept filming elsewhere. They can't really stop you.

"Love Ben & David." I see this frequently and am befuddled by it. No one loves Ben & David nearly as much as Ben & David loves Ben & David. And that sort is a total turn off for me. I can't stomach more than a couple minutes of their overly dramatic smugness.

This is the second time that this has happened to them. MSC’s FB, IG, and TikTok have been just SLAMMED with comments about this. This has become big enough that I can see MSC working to do damage control and having to address it.

Yeah, that was a huge PR fail for MSC. The video was absolutely glowing with praise for the ship, the cabin, and the value of the suite experience on MSC, and then MSC shut them down. Craziness. Ben and David were giving MSC a second chance after having a terrible experience 3 years ago (waiter in the MDR who refused to seat them together when they explained they were a couple.) This cruise was going well until the cruise line got in its own way. I had just seen a beautiful new TV ad for MSC and thought, well there goes whatever they spent on that advertising. All the marketing money in the world can’t buy the amount of good will built by simply treating content creators with respect.

MSC seems to get in their own way quite a bit. They spend loads of money putting new ships and building new terminals in the US but all the reviews seem to be bad because of the service and food.

I think the smell of cigarettes which apparently permeates throughout the ship is the off putting factor for me. Ben and Dave did comment on this but coped even with the potential asthma. Ben and Dave turned down a free cruise on MSC because they would have had to create content according to the ship's directions. They wanted to be honest, good or bad so MSC got their knickers in a knot. Funny enough this review was more positive than negative up until management shut them down. Ben and Dave have always been discreet so that not too many passengers are inconvenienced by the filming.

The cruise was going well while they were filming INSIDE their room…. They were asked to stop NOT by MSC but by “Joe smo” who probably got a complaint from a fellow cruiser who ALSO had paid royally for the personal yacht club experience…

It won’t make any difference. The vast majority of people sailing don’t care about any of this. MSC will continue to do well as long as their pricing stays where it is.

We had a problem last September on the MSC Seaside being allowed to vlog/film the Yacht Club - after being given permission to tour those areas. It is unacceptable that MSC took this action with Ben and David, and it is so ironic they stopped an otherwise positive review of the Yacht Club experience.

This really upsets me. Ben and David do an excellent job being professional and respectful of others. I find them very fair in their evaluation of cruises. They were kind enough to go ahead and give MSC a good evaluation. Their camera is small without a microphone. So sad!

Dave and Ben played their cards right by giving them a good review this way they will put all the blame on MSC - anyways the viewers are doing exactly what Ben and Dave expected them would do by cancelling and MSC cruise or not ever book on MSC and to spread the word- and their hands are clean -

As a former property manager, I would say that if your activities are outside of the purpose for a place, it is better to ask for permission before rather than for forgiveness after. We had a process to allow people to come into our buildings and create content to allow us to protect the building occupants and the purpose of the place. There is also a difference between capturing personal photos and videos and doing so for a business purpose.

Oh, right ..your not judgmental. 🥴There were many factors that lead me to believe MSC handled this badly. In the end it was simple. MSC and specifically the Yacht Club does not have any policy/rules limiting filming in any public location on their ships. I read their policies for their ships, all public areas, and all Yacht club public areas. Have you? Every cruiser should expect to be held to the same to the same policies and rules as every other passenger on their ship. MSC should clearly outline rules and policies to all passengers. When it comes to filming on MSC, as of 3-11-24 there are NO policies prohibiting filming. It was this fact that persuaded me that MSC management has different rules for different customers. That is not the kind of company for me.

I watched Ben and David 's video yesterday I was not surprised at MSC at all only because of their lack of integrity not because of anything Ben and David could possibly do to cause that to happen. They are awesome and I support them 100%.

Hi Tony. I watched the video yesterday. I was shocked. It was All positive review's. Before they got shutdown. IMO I think it goes back to the experience they had a couple of years ago. The interesting part is they were invited to cruise for free and they turned it down. Paid for thier own cruise, they give an honest opinion and are really careful about recording other people without permission. Thank you for doing this today. I think MSC missed the mark on this one. They got smacked down because of the HONEST critical review and experiences they shared. Once The crew got wind of who they are, they shut them down quick. It’s unfortunate. I love Ben and David and am sad this happened to them. Too bad for MSC too. A negative review would have been much better for them in the long run. Pulling this crap is way worse for them! RIP MSC.

The ironic thing is that B&D showed an email inviting them on another MSC cruise! Like make up your mind MSC do you want B&D to review your cruise line or not? MSC really screwed up. You can tell their main business is shipping containers because they have no idea of what customer service is.

That's what I said. A company with a great product wants it to be showcased (at no charge to them!) on KZfaq. A company that sacrifices quality in the name of cost cutting likely doesn't want its reality to be on display. A terrible look for MSC.

MSC is probably trying to control the narrative because they have gotten so much negative press in the past. I believe they were mainly in the European market up until a year or so ago. But the stories of rude service and bad experiences have followed them since they have decided to move into the US market. Ben and David's first experience 3 years ago was a bad one and their video reflected that. They were giving MSC another shot with this cruise and found a similar experience after being on the ship for 3 days. It definitely convinced me not to consider MSC for future travel.

Never had a problem when content creator is on the ship. Rarely notice them. Love to look at content of ships I plan to cruise on. Helps me decide what cruise or ship to take.

I just mentioned that also because I think in 2024 vlogging isn't new anymore and with how many cameras are just in our everyday lives people just don't notice them anymore & when they do it just doesn't bother people. I'm sure there are a few who don't like it but I think they are in the extreme minority.

Yeah, I just watched Ben and David's show about this last night and was totally shocked at how MSC would shut them down. They were giving MSC such a glowing review before this happened and then everything seemed to turn South. I have never sailed on MSC, but you can certainly bet that I have zero intention of ever setting foot on any of their ships in my lifetime.

So glad you spoke about this. As someone with their first cruise coming up in November, the available content on You Tube has been extremely helpful. Without it, I wouldn't feel comfortable. We have family members that love cruising and are hoping we will too. It will never be on MSC. Management shouldn't treat passengers the way MSC treated Ben and David. The only way I would object to content creators is if they shoved a camera in my face and treated me poorly. In my opinion, the content creators drive more business to the cruise lines.

Thank you for reporting on Ben and David's incident with MSC… I saw the video last night and it was very disturbing to me… I wonder if they weren't allowed to film because they were in the Yacht Club.... for whatever reason they were banned they should've been given a reason.....Heartbreaking if you ask me… Especially because they were so positive and I think many of us were looking forward to their review and video!!!!! 💔

It’s one thing when it’s an annoying influencer randomly filming people without their knowledge among other and the cruise line tells them stop for harassment purposes. That is not who Ben and David are at all. It’s a totally different thing to affect one’s legitimate business as a paying passenger (not an invitee by the cruise line) TWICE (first being in 2021.) I completely stand by Ben and David’s decision; and as a side note, you should definitely do a podcast episode with them.

Yes. But they have a huge following = hug audience. Yacht club is very intimate and not all guests or crew want to be seen in the background.

All passengers are subject to the Cruise Lines t&Cs of carriage , a position agreed to when confirming a booking and upon boarding the vessel, no matter how big a 'fluencer an individual believes themselves to be or how great the subscription number is on YT

Right...but don't most cruise contracts for passengers have a specific clause preventing the operation of profit-making enterprise while a passenger? There is no "legitimate business" on a cruise ship that is not conducted by the cruise company. Say you were a lawyer and you gave someone legal advice on a cruise ship then billed them later...you couldn't do that. You couldn't photograph people and charge for it. You can''t sell things you make or offer any kind of fee-based service on a cruise.

@@fletcherprince I agree with this "contract" stance but MSC invited them onto this exact cruise fully paid but with a lot of conditions and approvals on their content required. I know this was a European tour but there is also an element of "Freedom of the Press" that could also be applied here.

Tony I watched their video. They did ask them about their KZfaq channel and it appeared after being asked the question it became a problem. In all honesty this is the first I’m hearing a cruise line shutting down a content creator. I heard other stories about this cruise line and after hearing their story and others I will not be cruising on this line. Sad because the review was balance and I was thinking about revisiting because I had some reservations. It’s the treatment of people that concerns me and for that reason I can’t purchase a vacation from them.

As I said in the comments on Ben and Davids channel, I was warned off MSC in 2012 when I started cruising, 29 cruises later and no, not one is MSC, lets hope, like you Tony, this gets shown on all cruise vloggers channels.

I believe this is just bad communication.I love their channel but From what I understand, they were filming with the large equipment which caught the attention of some VIPs in the Yacht Club (probably with their mistress) that did not want to get filmed. Despite Ben and David being discreet, some of these high profile individuals are protective of their privacy (as we should all be). So, make sure you as a KZfaqr to get authorized by HQ and follow the same protocol TVs and News channel companies need to follow. There are regulations for this.

I've already watched that video, and what is mind-blowing is they were giving MSC a really good review & had been really impressed. Boy did MSC blow it!! I love Ben and David. As someone trying to decide what line I want to go on, I love how they show the food and ship in detail. And I've seen enough to know they go when dining rooms etc are as close to empty as possible and they bend over backwards to not disturb other passengers or even to film them. I always found that respectful. What is so ironic is I had ruled out MSC because so many different creators (and even some real life friends lol) thought their food wasn't good. But watching the video I was thinking "geez this food looks MUCH better, maybe I should consider them again, as their pricing is good." Then they acted like this, and now I want no part of them!!! If this is how they treat paying customers, and that is what they were, that is not acceptable. My other concern was hearing of customer service issues with that line. This PROVES there are problems. I can't imagine being told I can't take video on my phone on vaca. I hope MSC wakes up when they see how much great, free publicity they were about to get. THEY BLEW IT...big time!!!!

Instead of being treated as criminals in public and forbidden to even take photos of each other with their phones? Anywhere? Then to be treated like dirt from the rest of the crew and staff until they left the ship? They were Yacht Club paying guests as well and deserved better. MSC blundered big time.

@@phyl1042 I 100% agree that the cruise company didn’t handle it right at all, however if they did get pulled aside and told that politely the cruise line is within their rights to ban them from filming at all except in private in their room, I still think we would have got a video with a headline saying “BANNED FROM FILMING MSC”

Your show, Emma, and the others I've watched have all done a commendable job of focusing on the ship and its features while minimizing the focus on other passengers. Sure, they occasionally turn up in "scene" shots, but only in an incidental way, not as the focus of your content. Keep up the good work!

I was considering booking a cruise in there but I don’t want my vacation ruined by being screamed at. It’s despicable how they were treated.

MSC just made a colossal mistake. (over 240K views on Ben and David's channel saw that and the 245k people on your channel seeing the negative experience) Censorship is wrong. What is good for the goose is good for the gander (cell phone filming or other other means..) BTW. I enjoy your videos very much. Keep up the great work

Well that's one thing I don't have to worry about is large audiences viewing my cruise channel..I filmed the MSC Seaside, had a stabilizer and Canon camera and no one said anything to me, but they did give me issues when in the casino.

It sounded to me like MSC wants to control what goes out about their cruise line. Apparently they were offering a free cruise which came with strings attached. B&N declined the offer and bought their own tickets. MSC just didn’t like it. As far as causing trouble for the other passengers apparently the management didn’t even realize they were there for several days.

I join in the chorus of folks that are happy that you are covering this. I watched their video last night and I really couldn’t believe it. Especially since their preceding video of this same cruise had been largely positive about their experience this time around. I believe MSC just created a PR nightmare for themselves by taking these actions against Ben and David and I expect it will hit them where it really hurts; their bottom line.

Surprisingly our own National Park system completely stopped KZfaq creators by no longer allow them to film within any of our National the Parks! Tony keep doing what you do

I used to watch Cara and Nate and I think when Covid hit, they decided to come home to the US and film in the national parks. They did this whole video about how somebody ratted them out about going to the national parks and filming. So their idea of shooting in the national park were shut down And they just decided to a road trip all over the US and a camper.

Remember that in Europe, Data Protection goes a long way. And that includes publishing the image of individuals online without consent. Add that with potential complaints onboard on this particular ship and you get exactly this situation. I’m guessing they triggered complaints in some way.

I am so glad you mentioned this I hate what they did to these two. They were giving MSC a really good overall rating until that happened. I went on MSC once and it was the worst cruise I have ever been on and I have been on over 50 cruises.

They even had an invitation to cruise for free from MSC but decided to pay for it so it could be a free and balanced review. People should remember that if you are in public you have no reasonable expectations to privacy.

Not true, when you are on the private property of any company (in this instance the cruise ship) and the filming is for commercial gain you need the permission of the people being filmed. That is why I watch Tony and Emma because they do a very good job of Keeping people out of the views of the camera

They aren't making home movies. They are filming for monetary gain. Big difference. Permits and release forms are required for commercial filming.

Tony, thank you for bringing attention to Ben and David’s heavy handed experience with MSC. This cruise line seems to have no sense of customer care. As I’ve commented elsewhere, they seem to have beautiful ships filled with bad food, poor entertainment, and unsuitable management. I know they have/had a media relations department. What are they doing? What a debacle. Keep up the good work. Love your channel!

I’m so glad you addressed this. I watch all kinds of cruise content for both entertainment and for research. I have cruised a lot! With 33 sailings on carnival and a few cruises with other lines I have started to try to broaden my horizons and was genuinely looking at MSC after your video. Then I watched Ben and David’s video. I was literally on the web working out a booking on MSC in the yacht club when they were shut down. The way in which they were treated made me question safety on that cruise. For me MSC is a hard no. Anyway keep doing what you do. It’s valuable in many ways!

I can say 100% that cruise vloggers are the reason I booked my first cruise. Being able to see the product first made me confident to spend the money. I was so appalled by how Ben and David were treated! They had to abandon an expensive trip when they had done nothing wrong. From their video, it was clear MSC was scared of a bad review. How ironic. Reminds me a bit of the influencer who got banned from Qatar airlines because of his critical review of a really sub-standard flight experience. First they tried to bribe him to take the video down (the footage was awful, such a dirty plane, honestly), and after he refused he was banned. I can't imagine what MSC was thinking, because you can't ban just one person from filming with their phone and leave the others be. That's crosses a line in my opinion.

We cruise a lot and we have seen content creators on every cruise we have been on , including multiple cruises in the MSC YC. I think MSC saw the prior review and shut them down. It’s so sad because it was actually a great review. Shame on MSC.

I’m a Platinum on Royal Caribbean, about to hit Emerald, and was looking ahead to trying out MSC after seeing some pretty positive reviews of late. The situation with Ben and David absolutely set me on the side of not spending money with MSC going forward.
