Hey all you solo cruisers out there - this one’s for you!
Many of you have been asking us to do an episode all about cruise tips for solo cruisers for quite a while now. Of course, we don’t have tons of experience cruising solo because we typically cruise as a family. So we took our time, researched the topic, got lots of feedback from our solo cruising friends, and we think we have a pretty solid episode full of tips for singles and solo cruisers. Should you look for a cruise line with single occupancy cabins? How can you deal with the solo supplement? How does the main dining room work for solo cruisers. What happens if you get stuck with bad table mates? We’ve got answers to these questions, and more.

I prefer to travel solo and I love solo cruising! Don’t be afraid to book signature restaurants on the cruise ships. I always get a window seat and the servers are lovely towards me. Check out the trivia games and all the live bands. Happy cruising.

My solo cruising tips. Tip one. Spring for the extra money to have your own cabin. Never share a cabin with someone. Unless your in a physical relationship with them. No matter how well you get along with them there will be problems. Tip two. Always bring more money than you think you'll need. Something will always come up some problem. You will need money to solve it. Tip three. Shore excursions or ship activities. Always pick activities that will bring you into contact with the kind of people you want to spend your time with or pick activities that will help you avoid the types of people you want to spend time without. You're not good with kids. Remember some activities on and off ship will Draw certain types of people. Be prepared to tolerate them.

Have been on two cruises. First with a co-worker and second as a solo. I now have 2 more scheduled and they are both solo. There is no deciding who wins out on excursions. What time to go to bed, where to eat etc. There are plenty of people around to talk to and did not find anyone who shunned me because I was alone. Cruisers are wonderful people, or at least so far!!!!!

@@jlewis122 My biggest recommendation is to go on CruiseCritic.com and join the "Roll Call" for your cruise. You can get to know some people before you even go. There are usually planned activities, including a Meet and Greet at the beginning of the cruise. Also check to see if there's a Facebook group for your cruise. Search for the ship name followed by the departure date. Go and enjoy! Solo cruising is wonderful!

Same here. Cost more but less if you know what I mean. I join the Facebook group for that cruise and mingle with them once onboard. Just mingle a little and take off. It's awesome. Go where I want, eat what I want and cost less in the long run. No nagging!!

I'm done with cruising with women. They want their everything, can't even sneak off and hit the buffet. Solo cruising is worth every penny. Wear what I want, eat what I want and do whatever I want. I can see if she was paying but doubt that'll happen. Solo forever.

In three weeks I’m going solo on Seabourn for a 52-day cruise. Seabourn has in their MDR a table for solo passengers, hosted by an officer. People tell me, they had a fabulous time dining there. I plan to start there the first night and see how it goes. I’ve also read they hold solo gatherings. I’m both excited and nervous about my first solo cruise, but I know from being on Seabourn before they work hard to make the cruise special for all, even the solo passenger.

How did your cruise go? That solo table sounds wonderful. Two years ago on a solo Princess cruise I was at a table of all solo cruisers (no officer though) and we had a blast. I'm still friends with a woman I met there and we have continued going on the same cruise as solos. We both just booked for this year's November repo cruise. Can't wait!

My first cruise was this past September on the Norwegian Breakaway in a solo cabin. The only real con to a solo cabin is that you don't have a balcony or an outside view other than through your TV. Of course this applies to all inside cabins. The pros are that the room is very space efficient, the bed is a full (between a double and a queen), toilet room and shower aren't cramped, the solo section (cabins and lounge) are accessible only to those in the solo cabins, the peace and quiet (no noisy neighbors), the cabins may not have a coffee maker but the lounge has a coffee/hot chocolate machine that offers frappes, cappucinos, lattes, etc as well as hot water for the selection of teas available, ... I could go on. The Freestyle daily newsletter would always list where and when the solo meetups were to be held. Rather than using the lounge, more ships are holding the solo meetups in a lounge or bar usually between 5:00 and 6:00; that time between the ships leaving port and the restaurants getting busy at the dinner hour. NCL assigns a solo cruise director for these meetups. On my cruise the director arranged daily reservations for any solos wishing to communally dine together in the main dining room and also arranged reservations for those solos watching the Broadway shows. Unlike many cruise lines, Norwegian offers Freestyle dining; dine anywhere and anytime. The only reason to book reservations is so that you get the time you want. The specialty restaurants and main dining rooms are the only restaurants where you can make a reservation even though you don't need to. You can also show up and wait till a table becomes available. All the other restaurants are first come, first served. As a solo, I ate both on my own and in a group (usually consisting of other solos). As I randomly met up with other solos I met at the meetups, we would arrange meals, activities and excursions with each other. If you are hesitant about going solo on a cruise, don't be. Most people are very open to meeting and chatting to strangers on a cruise.

Good tips! I've booked solo many times but have never actually ended up on a cruise alone. I have had a solo cabin, but with friends in other cabins. And I've also shared a cabin with someone, but didn't spend much time with them. One of these days I'll be completely alone, but I'm willing to bet, it won't be for long. I'm always meeting fun people to hang out with! My #1 Biggest type for potential solo cruising men, JUST DO IT!!!! There are so many single women on board, and very few single men from my experience. I still meet friends and hang out with couples and other single ladies, but would be nice to meet someone to at least have a few dances with, or a meal.

I just done my first two solo cruises this year. Being from Australia, our cruises have our gratuities built into the prices and are more expensive then the American prices. But I went on the cruises as the price was good and during a sail. I have 2 other solos, and one is actually in a suite as it was a very good price and I felt like splurging a little. Celebrity I find is the most expensive at this time, but as that is the 4th one I managed to snag an excellent sale of $50 deposit and $800 on board credit US, and that was a HUGE deal so I'm excited for that. And tbh, after being on 4 cruises with family before hand, I actually far enjoy cruising alone as I'm an introvert and can do whatever I want. And as I enjoy the specialty dining where my family refused to go to them, I don't have to worry about that at all and love dining at those restaurants. Future cruises are most likely to be mostly solo, with a few here and there with friends and family. My advise, book your excursions through the cruise line. They might be more expensive, but you'll be safer and have people from the ship to mingle and explore with, so a lot less stressful. Always look for sales, especially around Christmas and the start of each year as these are the times people aren't really looking to book, so the cruise lines are doing everything to get you to book. Do not cruise during school holidays, or pick a cruise line that will have less children during Christmas and Halloween times like Princess. When traveling to the cruise terminal, go the day or two before and try to stay at a hotel as close to the port as possible. I have done that out of Sydney Australia and stay at a hotel that's within walking distance of the terminal and train station that is linked to the airports. And just relax, you have all the time to yourself and there is no stress or worries about what to do, and with the pamphlet each morning, work out what you want to do the next day and even if you don't get to it, there's always a plan B lol

I have cruised solo quite a few times. Definitely make sure you check the solo cabin prices and other cabins. On my next cruise, I wanted to try the solo cabin, but found a inside cabin was cheaper, and an outside only a little bit more. The line said that it was because of the "high demand" for the solo cabins. Make sure to use your browser's incognito mode when making inquiries, so you aren't "seen" doing the research...

I usually cruise solo. For dining, if it's offered, I ask for Anytime dining and the tell the staff I will share a table. Nearly every time, I get to meet a whole new group of people, although there are some repeats as most people tend go eat at the same time every night. I also partake in all the dancing and singing activities, so I tend to meet a lot of people there. Plus, the entertainment staff usually knows me after ust a couple of days.

My last five cruises have been solo and I love it! Two of them were in dedicated studio cabins (RCCL Ovation of the Seas and NCL Epic). Two of them, I'd booked studio cabins but then I took an upgrade offer. The last one was surprising; it was a regular interior cabin on Princess, which is maybe the least solo-friendly major cruise line. I got lucky and found a fare that didn't have the single supplement. My advice is to look at those ships that have studios (all the newer NCL ones and many of the newer RCCL ones) and plan far in advance. I'm to the point of knowing that a new ship with studios is being built, and snagging a studio cabin right when they open for bookings. I booked an October 2023 cruise on the upcoming Norwegian Viva... 11 months ago!

When I first stated cruising, back in 1997, my first 3 or 4 cruises were solo. Back then, Carnival had a single share program (no longer now), where they matched you up with someone to share a cabin..a 1A. I had good matches, and bad matches, but I always had a GREAT cruise. Years later, I would occasionally book a cruise by myself, to de stress from life and my husband. I have booked cabins by myself and have also done the solo on NCL. The best thing to do is watch for sales...and if it is a late booking, have a travel agency book your air, they can usually get a better deal for you if it is an open jaw flights. I enjoy the solitude, but I also mingle at events, or meet up with others for shore excursions. Joining a roll call is the best advice...sharing info and having the opportunity to meet up with others that you have chatted with makes it easier. There is no such thing as a bad cruise....it is all in how you look at it!

When I was on the Norwegian Getaway Trans-Atlantic in May 2019, they were not letting people in the Solo Lounge unless you booked a Solo Cabin. If we brought other people in some of the cruisers were complaining because they said they paid extra to get a Solo Cabin. On our cruise the Solo Cabin was more expensive than booking an inside and paying 2X

Went on my first solo cruise late last year. This was booked when my late wife was still alive. Then she passed away before the cruise. Went on a Princess Cruise. We started sailing on Princess a few years ago then booked another. First, got hit with a single supplement which almost tripled what I had left to pay. Then got a refund for a good part of it. Went on Cruise Critic and told them about my wife's passing. Got lots of sympathy, but, no one from the Cruise Critic pages introduced themselves to me. I wore a Cruise Critic hat on some days. The cruise line kept me seated alone. I brought a picture of my late wife and I down to the dining room to be opposite me at the table. Any single events were scheduled for the time I was eating my dinner. Like to eat early.

I feel like there is a significant difference between a solo cruiser and a single cruiser. Unfortunately these video's seem to routinely get them mixed up. Also, just because I choose to sail alone does not mean I need to be segregated to my own Solo lounge. I am happily married, but my wife gets terribly motion sick. I have avoided cruising for years because of this (used to go - 6 cruises so far), but she has agreed to my going on a cruise alone since I really miss it and really enjoy it. I suppose I just do not understand what the big deal is to cruise agencies, as money is money and just because I am a solo cruiser does not mean I need to be treated any differently than a large group.

On Celebrity, my favorite line, It is very very very hard to overcome that solo supplement. And sometimes when you book for one on their website the price shows up as higher than if you book for 2. Seriously now that is crazy. Maybe it is because they know they won't be making as much money off one person (drinks, shore excursions) as they would with 2.

My first ever cruise was Celebrity and they wouldn't even serve me drinks!!! First night dining was sat at table on own until another couple showed up and was not once offered a drink including even some water. When a couple arrived late they stated they didn't want to drink so that was that. The waiter never acknowledged that I might wish to have a wine & when I tried asking was told that they did not do the wine orders! Was only later on another night that another solo sat at our table and offered for me to go halves with her in a bottle of wine. But was basically day 10 of a 14 day cruise before any wine waiter lowered themselves to even enquire if I would like a drink. So nice to be treated as invisible.

We also have a very active Facebook page with a bunch of activities planned. About 150 people signed up for our Meet & Greet and I'm hosting a solo's lunch the second day. Last year my dinner table was all solos and we had a blast. Requested an all solos table this year, including a super nice lady I sat with last year. I suggest folks try the MDR for lunch. The thing with the "solo supplement" is purely down to the cruise lines. They offer "per person" rates to make it look cheaper, when in reality, it works just like a hotel. If you book a hotel by yourself, you aren't shocked that it costs the same for one as it does for two. Same thing. As a solo, you at least don't pay double port taxes and gratuities.

I always look forward to your videos but this one was completely off the mark. My experience was positively awful. Perhaps there are several things that changed my perspective. I realize this video was made a few years ago, so maybe peoples expectations have changed. I have been on 6 or 7 cruises so far. I will never accept anything less than a balcony cabin, so I know I will have to pay for double occupancy. This would be the first cruise as a single person. My last cruise started the Saturday after Thanksgiving 2021, and ended 2 weeks later in December. From the first day on the ship it was obvious to me that the crew was not prepared for single people. I felt discriminated because I was single. I was on a ship that accommodated 3400 guest but was running at 50% capacity (1700 guests). I therefore expected better service since there was supposedly a full compliment of staff on board. 98% of the guest were couples over 65. Im not quite 60 yet. I felt like I was the only single person on the ship. There were 3 swimming pools on the ship and the pool water was very cold. About 60F in each pool. People over 65 are more sensitive to the water temp. That pool water should have been at least 85F. Nobody used the pool for more than 30 seconds at a time because it was too cold. There is no assigned dining times any longer. You must make reservations if you want a specific time. I purposely did not make reservations because I would prefer to be taken to a random table and meet new people every night. I want taken to a table for 2 next to the busing table and I ate alone. The next night I said I wanted to share a table with someone. They seated the couple in front of me, and the couple behind me, and took then to the same table. I was left standing there. I was told there was no tables available on this side of the dining room, and they could take me to the other side. I was taken to a table for 6 and told that other guest would join in a couple of minutes. Nobody showed up, and I sat a table for 6, and had dinner by myself. The cruise line is not aware or does not care about the age demographics of their guests. Their entertainment line up included rap and other modern music, if you can call it that, that nobody appreciated. On the excursions, the tour operators expected every body to be paired up as couples. The woman asked me where my wife was and I said I dont have one, I am a widower. Where is the woman that was with you wearing blue. I am not with anyone. What do you not understand? I felt like punching her in the face. If this were my first cruise, it would have been my last. I guess I will have to find a travel agent that specializes in singles cruises.

It's a shame that solos can only get interior cabins without having to pay a 100% supplement.

You keep using; "solo" and "single" interchangeably, which isnt the case. It makes it a bit confulsing.
