They thought that the Russian weapon is a vintages weapon and the Russian don't have any new technology weapon like the Afghan, Iraq, Pakistan or Syria. Like it was told by their media. But when they came, they in a hurry to go home.

What happened? Can't fight actual soldiers, only civilians in Afghanistan?

I’m an American and the people who volunteered just to fight are idiots. The veterans are finding out that this war isn’t getting potshots taken at them from 500 yards, hunkering down, and waiting for air support. Russia is the stronger force here and these volunteers are finding that out the hard way. Don’t choose to fight in a war you have no stakes in.

As I've said from the first day you dont fuck with the Russians especially on their turf. I argued with many of my friend's who thought it right to cheer for Ukraine to fight this war, i knew with absolute certainty that this would be a disaster the likes not seen since WW2 and ultimately Ukraine would loose.

I belong to several veteran's Facebook groups and when this all started some yahoos on there were beating their chests about how they were going to go and teach the Russians a lesson. But that died down rather quickly. Haven't heard a peep out of anyone for a while.

Turns out fighting real soldiers is way harder than sitting in an air conditioned FOB Burger King in between shifts of bombing Pashtun kids with drones!

It's a completely different kettle of fish when you're up against a professional army. Instead of a jumbled mess.

The foreign fighters that fought in Afghanistan and Iraq don't have the same "luxury" they had in both wars, like Air strikes, Close Air Support, Adequate equipment, ammo, and transport. So a lot of the tactics and doctrines they learned are not much applicable in this current situation.

They believed their own media. Very foolish. At least do some proper research on why the war started. Putin didn't wake up one day and thought, "I think I'll invade Ukraine".

From what I’ve seen there is severe lack of comms on the Ukrainian side, especially between foreign fighters and Ukrainian units. Also no cobras, on call arty, JDAMs from the carrier strike group, etc.

When you fight soldiers and not farmers it’s a different war indeed. As an ex British army veteran I can with hand on heart say that the wars we we involved in Iraq and Afghanistan were nothing compared to the falklands war. Western army’s our simply not used to fighting a professional army.

I guess many foreign volunteers have their "1914 -moment". Back then, British army officers had led many colonial wars against much weaker opponents and expected decisive results with minimal military efforts. They were absolutely shocked about the small successes and heavy losses sustained when fighting against a fully fledged modern army.

These mercenaries have never been in a real war. Most of them always had the odds on their side. Fighting an enemy who has the same or better equipment is what war is about. Bombing innocent people who could not fight back was never a war, just a massive massacre, a war crime.

Iraq & Afghanistan, we had controlled the Air and superiority in Firepower. In Ukraine, the rolls are reversed. It’s totally different.

You also have to realize the foreign legions aren't fighting their own wars for their own soil and own families. Of course they realize it isn't a war they want to fight once there. The moral of a foreign volunteer vs a home grown soldier are completely different.

They are all used to fight insurgents equipped with AKs, hand grenades and RPGs while enjoying being supported by drones and satellites.. When your opponent is a modern army with artillery, mortars, aircover - that's a different story. So, when someone claims he has combat experience, that should be taken with a grain of salt.

You know it's the absolute shit show when they tell "I've never seen Russians in this war" and then some other guy who has been through six wars, calling this one as the worst. I bet he also never seen Russians. They all never seen Russians. And then they die.

Of course... these mercenaries would only fight in a situation where they could win 10 out of 10... fighting against shepherds armed with sticks doesn't seem to be the same thing as fighting against an organized and up-to-date army, who would have thought....

In Afghanistan and Iraq enemy had little to no artillery and allied forces mainly US and UK had air superiority.... Which is huge advantage..... Being shelled day and night will warp your mind

It is understandable, as there is a huge difference between an insurgency and a semi conventional war. The foreign fighters are also not used to be fighting without overwhelming superiority.

These foreign mercenaries went to fight but are getting killed without even seeing a single enemy. Some of their camps are being obliterated from 1000s of miles away from the Black Sea. Most soldiers today only engage after the airforce has annihilated the ground forces, by then there is little resistance. Must come as quite a shock to engage with a capable army in old school warfare!

Its because a lot of those volunteer soldiers (mercenaries) who went to ukraine to fight are used to be the one on the offensive and are the one dropping the bombs and not the ones on the receiving end of bombardments.

Latest figures show 35,000 showed up and only 1,000 remained..most fled as soon as they could...others who stayed have been eliminated- remainder are now in the rear for PR with little to no contact because they know we will not take them prisoner...that special privilege is only for Ukrainians who we consider lost brothers. Time will heal but I expect hatred to continue. Our job after we win is to help them remember who they were not what they tried to be. If Ukrainians were proud and behind Zelensky most would have stayed and joined not fled and applauded from another country

The British government said if British soldiers went Awol to go fight in the Ukraine would face prosecution when they returned, not get prosecuted for volunteering to fight if civilian.

It isn't Russia that started nor continues this war. Russia tried several time to negotiate and bring peace 10 years ago. NATO kept infringing.... and their ilk started this war. Russia is defending, as any father would for their family, against an intruder.

The fighting in Ukraine is like the Western Front of WWI. A soldier will meet his end by enemy artillery. That's why artillery is the king of battles, it produces the largest amount of casualties in combat. The infantry on both sides are always going to be targeted by artillery.

The majority of soldiers in Ukraine, on either side, have not yet laid their eyes on an enemy soldier. This is a war of artillery, and artillery is the most terrifying type of attack to be subject to because it is so random, and you are so completely helpless.
