Appreciate this breakdown, I'm just getting back into unix/linux and discovered FreeBSD a month or so ago. Amazing how I can still re-use my 1990's unix sys v and bsd knowledge after decades of Windows work. I've missed unix so much.

Numya, it is at that, and I miss Unix too, so much simpler in a lot of ways (than Linux) Windows is a different story )

@@CyberGizmo sadly I was unable to improve my income prospects without moving to Windows. In those days NT 4 was new and so was parallel processing on low-cost platforms, so that was exciting as a C developer of back-end solutions. But Unix was always a much more pleasurable platform to develop industrial strength code on, as well as for general administration and so on. Windows has always been a nightmare in many ways, but I can't argue with the paycheck I was getting. I say "was", so now dusting off my Unix chops. Enjoying your content.

DJ Ware, the reason why you can’t access xorg is because the drm-kmod drivers are broken currently. You have to compile from ports.

@@CyberGizmo Fyi, finally had some time to play around with Freebsd. The install was pretty straight forward. Setting up Xorg took some time due to intel + nvidia video cards and startx. Finally just installed xorg-minimal and everything worked without adding any xorg conf file. Not sure if I’am gonna “replace” my arch workstation with freebsd though...

@DJ WARE They've drm-fbsd12. 0 compiled in a FreeBSD 12.1 machine and it apparently breaks intel and other drivers (mesa) . Solution is to pull the sources and compile this port. Similarly, despite Gnome updated to 3.38, it has distorted icon in buttons due to old librsvg2. It needs FreeBSD move to choose librsvg2-rust as default. They did not, yet.

I used FreeBSD back around 2000, I think it was v3.1. Later I went for PC-BSD on desktop. I really like its architecture, but on desktop Linux got stable enough to be used on desktop around 2010, with all the benefits of hardware support, otherwise I would still be on FreeBSD. I'd like to see more under the hood on FreeBSD/OpenBSD/NetBSD, maybe comparisons, and setting up services, hardening etc. Thanks for your videos.

Very good walk through which inspired me to install it into a VM, first with Virtualbox on Windows, then with KVM/Qemu on Lubuntu. Took several attempts lol! Now I did once a get a job as a sysadmin with a web host managing a ton of FreeBSD servers, and at the time thought "lets get these onto Linux" lol, but in my retirement kinda like it and could get used to it. If you've a fairly low end box, maybe a 32 bit version of FreeBSD should be considered as the latest Linux/Windows might be too heavy. Not to insult FreeBSD as its intended for high end stuff too. You may run into issues with FreeBSD as a guest in a VM (like the mouse issue but thats all part of the fun) so I'm thinking some Raspberry Pi's I've got might be getting a change of OS soon!

Its like for freebsd, you have to do research about if your hardware is supported, if it is supported, in which driver, module, or you have to download some new drivers and manually doing kldload. for example getting my rx570 kldload amdgpu, add my user into video group. or on my laptop its kldload i915kms. for my HD Graphics 4400

Tried installing it on a Skylake laptop but couldn't XFCE working. Glad to hear It's not just me. A commenter noted that drm drivers are broken & need to be compiled from ports - we'll see. Was looking to go FreeBSD with my main laptop to take advantage of bhyve, jails, ZFS on root and boot environments. No longer so amped.

For all those interested but maybe scared of FreeBSD: Look into 'Boot Environments' first. You "bectl create working_state" create a ZFS snapshot and can boot back into it upon any reset, giving you VM-like levels of flexibity on a phsical host. It's remarkable but NOT available if you install UFS, ZFS only. This way you can toy with your new physical FreeBSD install without consequence.

I still have a Pentium 4 HT at 3.0GHz and I use it as backup server with FreeBSD 12.2. It backups my Ryzen desktop running Ubuntu 20.04. Both systems are booting and running from ZFS. The backup system is in use since mid 2019. The back-up is based on "zfs send | ssh zfs receive" It is a miracle of modern software, it is going from: 2019 AMD Ryzen -> 2003 Intel Pentium 64-bits -> 32-bits nvme-SSD -> IDE-HDDs Ubuntu 20.04 -> FreeBSD 12.2 Linux -> Unix/BSD ZFS on Linux -> ZFS on FreeBSD with incompatible default feature settings with respect to large-dnode. For the last time with 2 different ZFS products, because OpenZFS rel 2.0 should be implemented in FreeBSD 13 and Ubuntu 21.04 in begin 2021. The backup server is a headless and has two cables, Power and Ethernet (1 Gbps). FreeBSD runs with XFCE, XRDP and Conky. The large majority of the backup are ~45 VBox virtual machines and approx half of them are weekly updated, the other half are old like Ubuntu 4.10 or Windows 3.0. It runs the backup on 200 Mbps instead of 1 Gbps due to a 95% load on one of the two CPU threads. The size of the backup storage is 1.2 TB (3 x 320GB + 250GB, using 2 x 3.5" IDE and 2 x 2.5" SATA-1) and the backup contains 0.9 TB. The weekly incremental backup time is

Huh. Gnome on FreeBSD. I had never seen that before. I once had FreeBSD 11 on a laptop for a month or so. I got Xfce working, but it was a struggle. Eventually I converted back to Linux, mostly because a key dependency for AisleRiot Solitaire was missing at the time. Guess I wasn't all that dedicated! By the way, it was extension breaking issues that recently led me to replace Gnome with Xfce in my two Fedora installations. However, I reconfigured my usual Xfce setup to look more like Gnome with an upper panel, a lower dock, and the Mojave-Dark theme. Cheers.
