Hi All & welcome back!
I wanted to take the time and dedicate a video to all things citrine. Unfortunately there is a wide range of citrine from China that is treated Amethyst or dyed quartz and being sold as "natural" citrine. In this video I will show a variety of natural citrines as well as examples of fakes. I hope this video helps folks who appreciate visual examples of what to look for or to lookout for. If you are looking for natural citrine I have a few options avaliable in my shop which is linked below. Thank you for watching and all of your support!

Absolutely loved this! I am also a visual learner so this was spot on for me. I loved that you showed so many examples of what you want to look for. It's so crazy just how off fakes and heated amethyst is. Also I never knew citrine was natural heated amethyst.

Thank you so much 😊 it's honestly what helped me the most when identifying fakes. Learning where it comes from and working with credible suppliers from these countries directly. So many wholesale suppliers in the states aren't giving the lowest prices.

Awesome video on citrine and very good examples. You touched on weight and it would have been interesting to get more details on density of the various types and what causes it. This is another way to check for natural citrine perhaps? Lovely examples and thanks for making us more aware! Have a great day.

@annascrystalshop
@annascrystalshop Жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, citrine will range from yellow to Champaign tones but it will have a more champagne hue where as Smokey Quartz usually is more darker brown tones. So try looking for more champagne colors for citrines vs dark brown. Also always ask where suppliers get citrine from. Most genuine citrine comes from Brazil and the Congo.

@@annascrystalshop Nvm, after watching your video, I did some further youtube watching and I’m pretty sure mine are heat treated. They are expertly executed, tbh. It’s so hard to tell unless you’re an expert. Apparently, mine have really faint phantoms, which is a tell tale sign that they are heat treated smokey quartz. Did I get bad info, or is that correct?

Hey! I’m a huge fan of your shop and I love your videos :) I’ve been an avid collector for about two years now and I was also briefly in the crystal retail business. I would like to point out though that what you are calling “fake” citrine in this video is not necessarily fake, at least I wouldn’t use that term to describe it. I would describe it as “heat treated” or “enhanced”. Both real and enhanced citrine end up having the same molecular chemistry as each other. It’s just that.. one structure is created and sped up by man. Both types of citrine still hold the same spiritual and molecular properties as one another :)

Nice video Anna!! I would like to ask how can you differentiate sometimes between citrine and smoky quartz, because it's very difficult and I see people who have smoky quartz and call them citrine and vice versa.I think it's also subjective from what I see 😂. What do you think about this? With all due respect, in your video I see citrines that look like smoky quartz to me, and that does not mean that they are precious.
@annascrystalshop
@annascrystalshop 2 жыл бұрын
Hey 😊 I absolutely understand they do look very similar. I tell everyone usually to look for coloring. Smokys have a more brown hue to them where as citrine more champagne or pale yellow. You also want to make sure you are sourcing from countries were genuine citrine comes out of like Brazil. I hope that helps 😊

Late question, but how can you tell the difference between a smokey Quartz and a smokey Citrine in the Brazilian cut?
@annascrystalshop
@annascrystalshop Жыл бұрын
Hey 😊 so for Smokey Quartz it has a richer deep brown almost black color where as Smokey Citrine will have a hint of a champagne honey color even if it’s a Smokey citrine. When you compare Smokey citrine and Smokey Quartz there is a slight difference. Only really comparable when you have the two in front of you.

Thank you for this wonderful and very comprehensive video. I was wondering if certain citrines had more value than others according to its color, excluding factors like clarity and size. I was told that smoky citrines were less expensive, but in my opinion, it looks like smoky citrines can have the deepest and richest gold colors. Could you weigh in in that? 😅
@annascrystalshop
@annascrystalshop 3 ай бұрын
Hey, yes so clarity and more of the champagne colors tend to run a bit more pricer but not by much. I think the only real difference in value you’ll see is clarity wise. Ones that aren’t as transparent and have more of a foggy look tend to run much cheaper than the higher quality clearer pieces.

How can you tell if a stone that is sold as a natural citrine is not a dyed Smoky Quartz? ✨💎✨
@annascrystalshop
@annascrystalshop 11 ай бұрын
Hmm that’s a good question I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard of Smokey Quartz being dyed to look like citrine. I know clear Quartz is dyed in China a lot and has the highlight yellow color that doesn’t look natural but I haven’t seen a Smokey dyed to look like citrine. I would think it would have a not appealing brown color to it or like a cognac color to it.

@annascrystalshop
@annascrystalshop Ай бұрын
Hey, yes they are very very similar especially when comparing Smokey citrines to Smokey Quartz. It’s true the only way to 100% confirm would be to test each piece by hardens or sending it out for further testing which can be costly. It’s always good to ask where shops get their citrine from because that’s a good indicator as well.

i found natural citrine pieces very small mostly as a kid seiving for saphires in australia... they where always in the same outer ring as the quartz due to being less heavy than saphires which where always in the middle of the overturned seive washed to center the heavy stones before turning over. the mos hardness says citrine are the same hardness as amethyst ... and quarts is slightly harder .5 harder... this is all such a mind fk lol .... ok i think i just bought a heated amethyst but i have plenty of smoky quartz already so i think ill keep it cuz i want the yellow i know from a kid.

That’s amazing, did you keep any from when you were a kid? I also agree if you get pieces that are treated or not natural citrine that’s okay as well as long as the seller is disclosing that and not saying it’s natural when it isn’t.

Welcome to all the new commenters on this video to make it clear when I say “fake citrine” I mean the citrine that is man heated and sold as “real” citrine. I do not mean the whole piece is fake but just the miss labeling of natural vs man manipulated. Natural citrine is amethyst that is heated naturally by the earth.

Thank you.. I just really get offended by the term "fake" - its fake if it is a synthetic totally man-made rock. Its a real crystal (and in my opinion, still citrine) whether it was heated in the Earth, or by Man.

Hi Lisa 😊 yes I have seen that some vendors from Brazil were selling enhanced citrine as natural citrine from Brazil at the recent gem show. I didn’t go to see what it looked like for myself but it was a very saturated deep honey color that folks then found out were heated to enhance color. I haven’t heard much more besides when it was being sold from a vendor at the Denver show and I am not sure if that is still happening but for something to keep an eye on.

Yes there are natural citrines that are also from the Congo but a lot harder to get your hands on but when I do I’ll for sure do a video on them as well. I would say look out for any off yellow colors or pieces that don’t have a consistent coloring in the whole piece. A dead giveaway for dyed glass is a variation of coloring in a piece. Natural citrine should only have one color that’s the same on all sides.
