High Throughput Experimentation (HTE) is widely used to allow scientists to investigate and optimise reaction conditions in parallel for reaction screening and synthesis applications. Although using automated instrumentation to support HTE allows scientists to accelerate their research, solids with undesirable flow characteristics can still be problematic, even when dispensing in an automated mechanism. A recent technique developed, known as Chembeads, coats the surface of small inert (typically) glass beads with solid reagents. These then retain the highly flowable solid characteristics of the glass bead, regardless of the undesirable characteristics the native reagents may have. In combination with automation, this allows ChemBeads to be dispensed readily with automated solid dispensing technology, as seen with the Crystal Powderdose in this video.
