everybody we need to learn how to build this type of communications and survival skills the time is coming when we are going to need this knowledge.

my grandfather was a member of the signal corps in France 100 years ago. He was in the 96th aero squadron. His specific duties included radio operator. Which meant that he was in charge of radio communications including repair and maintenance. unlike today, he had to build his crystal radio piece by piece in the field. His job was classified until relatively recently. Fast forward to 1955. He finally had enough money saved up to buy his dream house on the beach with a wonderful view of the ocean. A few months later a radio station built a huge antenna next door less than 50 feet from his house. He was pissed. No he did not sue. No he did not complain. He got even. He went to the dump where his friend worked and over the next few months collected all the materials needed. Not long after that he had more free electricity than he knew what to do with. I believe he may very well have built the world's largest crystal radio. He ran all his house lights, refrigerator, fan and Tv from all the juice he got. Over the years they have upgraded the transmitter several times. I believe the current output is 250kw which I think is ten times the one they originally put out. My cousin now has the house and he still gets free power. They tried to have my grandfather arrested for theft but the judge said you can't be convicted of stealing that which someone gave you. They then tried to sue and the new judge basically said the same thing and over the years every new owner of the station has complained but to no avail. The last judge said that the radio station is free to erect a giant signal blocker as long as it does not block the view of the ocean.

I built my first foxhole radio last night and now I'm hooked ! I was picking up am stations all over! I dont speak mandarin or Spanish but fun . The razor blade diode worked really well I was shocked .

I started electronics in the digital domain, yet I find the analogue domain a lot more fascinating. Your build quality is awesome. No 3D printed malarky, just sold structures that will last a lifetime. Subbed! Would you happen to know how a bass sound is generated in something like a TR808? I'd love to see a project on that.

Love this. I remember trying to build one of these using old wire from a transformer the wire was just too beat up so I gave up. I think I may try again but buy new wire this time. I want to build this exact radio. I just got the book. I wanted a paperback but they want a wopping 400 something for the copy currently on Amazon. So I had to get the lame but informative digital copy. I never knew there was a way to make one this advanced I thought tge blued razor blad version was cool but this things out of this world. I built a modern radio some time ago from a soldering project kit and also a transmitter among many othere little 5 dallor soldering kits. I plugged my phone into the transmitter and high jacked a station to pick up on my radio. It was Purdy fun. Ide love to build a bunch of these fancy little foxhole crystal radios.

That diode just softly keeps the electrons flowing in one direction so the earpiece work.

3:32 ... I remember the crystal radio in my Cub Scout Handbook in the '60's used a quartz crystal with a bent safety pin to search for the "sweet spots"... never got that to work

May I ask what is connected to the stator on c2 in your build here. I was playing around with the wiring on mine and decided to connect the ground to the stator of c2 instead of to the frame of c2 and had interesting results it seems better than before with more channels when I had the ground only connected to the frame of my c2 with nothing connected to the stators and it worked but the ground capasitor seemed to have little to no affect to the output of the radio. I guess I'm wondering if I wired c2 incorrectly originally following the books instructions that said very little about c2 other than to wire the frame to c1 and to a headphone connection and to the 8 or 9th tab on the switch also wiring the stators together only on c2 if double gang. I was just going over your video again and realized you do indeed have something wired to the stator of c2 and started testing things on mine now I'm a little confused as to whether my new wiring is correct or not.

Excellent video. Just a point of modern radio: It is NOT necessary to connect one side of a crystal radio (or any radio) to actual earth ground. Earth is an especially poor conductor of radio frequencies. Better to use a balanced antenna like a dipole or simply another piece of wire of any convenient length in combination with a long wire. Nice, I love your presentation too...! I have been using it 30 years, but recently I added a transistor to amplify the sound. The landscape has changed so much..! There is constant buzz of cars, microwave, freezes, pumps, AC and what not. With my 200 ft long Antenna and speakers from old telephones works just fine. Asking you question ... Do my old Arial affects the tunning coil of One transistor set or not. The old set and amplifier set are a 2-3 ft Apart. God, I managed tune it finally after watching your video. Cheers.. hey, I plan to build an demodulator/amplifier using a NE555P chip by attaching the coil wiper to the threshold and trigger comparators and then the antenna has a connection to the control voltage pin I think this is a high impedance transistor that can act as a diode inside the actual semiconductor.

I like the concept of that little radio of yours. I could make a wooden casing for it to look like a sort of a victorian era wireless. Where could I find a wiring diagram for this type of radio? And how should I decide the positions of the taps on the winding? Lovely series by the way. I also have countless old radios in my room, in the dinner, in the garage, all of them have tubes, and all of them are working.Additionally I have an oscillo-synchroscope, two old tape recorders, four turntables and a still working old ring ring sort of telephone with the huge dial. I have even managed to find a 16mm movie projector, perhaps from the 60's, and it also has 4 tubes for the amplifier, and a big one as a rectifier. In the olden days everything were just better. "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." as we know.. So long Sir!

I saw the title of this video and it reminded me that it could only be 'free'-energy as long as there are stations on the air to supply the crystal set with energy. Did you ever talk with or listen to Art Bell W6OBB (now Silent Key RIP) back when he would talk about his huge loop antenna he had going around his Pahrump Nevada property? I remember him talking about how he had to install a protection-circuit of some kind between that loop antenna and his rig, otherwise the rig would be damaged by large voltages that were being induced into that giant loop. I do remember that he said that he ascertained that those voltages were not being picked up from local power-lines or other man-made sources. The discussion went on for quite a few Coast-To-Coast-AM episodes, but I don't remember what he finally concluded.. I missed that episode. I believe that the voltages were being generated by the naturally-surrounding Earth's magnetic fields cutting through the loop and developing voltages across it and appearing at the two terminals of the open-wire feedline connected to the loop. Now THAT'S free energy. He had three turns of thick antenna wire looped along the top of 70 foot tall masts spaced all around his big Pahrump property. I think it was about 3,000-something feet of wire he used in making that loop. On the ham bands his signal always BLASTED in 5/9+infinity in my receiver here on the west coast when he used that loop. :-)

I had a couple questions, I know this build is an older one of yours but I was wondering if this radio would be benefitted by adding a antenna coil or does having the looped coil make that a pointless addition? Thank you for your time. My assumption is that yes it will anhance its performance. Also I see the wrapped antenna on the cover of the book you have there. My question is in regards to it's practicality. Would somthing like that work effectively or is it better to simply run your antenna wire covering as much distance as possible as high as possible as you've stated. Again my assumption is that it probably does "work" but not nearly as good as the standard layout. Again thank you for your time.

For those wanting to build an "crystal radio" a few points that help. 1) If you move the diode to a tap that puts fewer turns between it at the ground end of the coil, the radio is more selective but not as loud. This is good in a place with many strong stations. 2) An "antenna coupling coil" slid inside the main coil can help you to adjust the coupling to the antenna. Looser coupling (sliding the coil out) makes it more selective. 3) A wire making a full turn around the outside of the house can result in an antenna with two ends. A turning capacitor between the ends can make the stations louder when correctly adjusted. 4) 1N914 or 1N4148 work OK as a "crystal" if that is all you can get. A small signal schottky is better. 5) "stolen power" radios are a cool trick. You basically make two crystal radios. One is tuned to a strong station and makes the power supply for a simple one stage amplifier on the other. 6) You can often get short bits of plastic plumbing pipe for nearly nothing. 4 inch AKA 10CM diameter worked very well for me. 7) Take a magnet to the hardware store so you can check that any brass screws you buy really are brass. Brass can be soldered to.

The video was great. The only remark I have on safety. If you have 100 feet of wire up high it can attract lightning it might be a good idea to have a lightning arrester on the pole outside. So the lightning doesn’t come inside. 🤦‍♂️

Question Crystal am radio, now they have plans for a "Crystal" FM radio. They also have plans to use a Crystal radio combined with a jewel their to light LEDs. Why can't you make a "Crystal radio" tv?

Your video brings me over 60 years back when I made my first crystal radio. I new nothing about impedance so the 75 ohm headphone worked perfectly. Now I am going to build another crystal radio together with my grandson. Unfortunately, there is no more am transmitting stations where I live so the result can frustrating.

I am more than a bit bewildered by the circuit. Take that coil switch. Position One (Left hand) A small amount of inductance (a few turns) is connected across the tuning cap forming a parallel tuned circuit and cannot possibly resonate in the AM band..also known as Medium Wave. Any signal which might survive has now got the rest of the coil acting like an RF choke in its path to get to the anode of the germanium diode. As the switch is moved to the right, more and more inductance is placed across the tuning cap and at the middle, only 40 turns worth can be tuned which won't make the Medium wave. When the switch reaches the right hand contact... the diode is now grounded on its anode and there there is nothing to detect/rectify. One simple question..AM I MISSING SOMETHING? I look forward to your help, (is it) John? Thank You. The redeeming factor is that the goldurned thing works!

Very nicely made. I also made one using a galena crystal and they are tricky. The box says 1924, price 2/6 and says it contains 2, 3 or 4 crystals, a special contact wire and instruction pamphlet. Was I robbed? I paid £3 for one crystal in the tin box. I remember reading somewhere the wire was phosphor bronze. Bill, G4GHB.

I have a home made crystal radio. My goal was to illuminate an led without any local power. I tried all sorts of things, but i never got it to work. I am not sure if there is an optimal setup, but i am still working on it. By the way i like your cat. But i think the cat attacked your radio because it heard you say you used a cat's whisker.

Actually... I've got a roll of 45 AWG copper wire, thinner than a human hair; I've always wondered what would happen if you put that on one end of a Mylar balloon and use it as an antenna. Wind currents mean that it's unlikely to be a truly straight wire antenna, but it could probably get pretty high.

About 80 years ago my grandfather moved next door to a radio station that had around 50kw antenna. He built a giant array of crystal radio sets and wired them together and it provided him with free electricity that resulted in a greatly reduced electric bill. But I didn't really believe him. Two years ago I moved into a new place and directly across from me is an A.M. radio station and it's very big antenna. I am less than 100 feet from the base of that antenna. So out of curiosity I built one crystal radio (I made one as a kid decades ago) and included an LED in the circuit to see what happened. Well dang if it didn't light up. As it happens I bought a few miles of copper wire a few decades ago at a yard sale for less than 1% of the normal price, actually a fraction of the scrap metal value. Being the pack rat that I am I brought it with me when I moved. So... I got me a little power plant and since I've recently converted to all LED light bulbs I now have a very bright house and yard and pay 0 for the light bill. It's not enough to run the A.C. or other appliances but it takes care of about 10% of my electric bill and honestly the only thing I had to buy was the crystals, a small investment for what I get. I figure I'm saving about $180 a year in electric costs and I think I spent maybe $30 on the crystals at the flea market. Of course winding all those coils took weeks lol. My neighbors think I'm crazy with all the antennas under my soffits. A funny side affect though is that even without any speakers my whole house reverberates with the radio broadcast. At least the programming is pleasant.

Dear John, Please stick to science and especially to our beloved crystal radios. You are far too nice a guy to taint your appeal by talking about things you know are gonna polarize your listeners. Don't mess about with a broadcast which brings us all together via science; your erstwhile talking in the realms political and spiritual is screwing up the laid back appeal of your delightful journey into radio science. An occasional philosophical foray is acceptable to me, but l feel lately it has become a more frequent and annoying aspect of your great presentations. I tune in for your approachable style and your accurate information, delivered only as a scientist and teacher can. Let me say I love your absolute dedication to doing as good a job as you can do. Nothing is ever haphazard. Joints are never cold soldered-you do not scrimp, nor will you tolerate anything less than your very best. As I say---I love your videos. I learn, I do and it is part and parcel of that "stuff" which keeps me going at an age where my compatriots of old are slowly but surely being assimilated into the couches they sit upon.
