Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more.
Today we hear the Combat Story of Aiden Aslin, a UK citizen who deployed multiple times into conflict zones to fight ISIS in Syria and Russia in Ukraine.
[NOTE: We're launching on Patreon soon. Register to get notified at www.combatstor...]
Aiden was not part of the British military. He simply decided the people in Syria being terrorised by ISIS needed more support and found a way to get down range to help.
During his multiple deployments into Syria fighting with other westerners against ISIS and nearly dying, Aiden had been following events in Ukraine. He again decided, instead of sitting safely in the UK, to step up and fight for people who needed help.
Today, Aiden is officially part of the Ukrainian military. We had to record this particular interview quickly before Aiden deployed to the frontlines again, where he is now.
His Instagram account (cossackgundi) is worth a look too where’s amassed 20K followers and describes himself as a “British guy Rocking it out in the Ukrainian marines” with what he calls “Warzone Photography” and “Conflict news”.
I hope you enjoy this humble and understated Combat Story of someone who left everything behind to help others in two vastly different conflicts as much as I did.
Also, Aiden is on the front lines of Ukraine today and suggested we meet again when he's back for a firsthand account of being on the line during these tensions.

Aiden Aslin surrendered on 12th April along with 1025 other Ukrainian Marines in Mariupol after a failed breakout attempt from the Illich Plant in North Mariupol. The Donetsk Peoples Republic Forces are establishing a new administration in Mariupol and now control all of the City apart from the vast Azovstal Steel Plant in South Central Mariupol. Cornered in Azovstal are an estimated 1,500 - 2000 Azov Regiment Ultra Nationalist troops and a number of Foreign Mercenaries. Many of the Azov militants are wanted by DPR Police for human rights abuses and war crimes during the 8 years of Conflict in the Donbass. Aiden was on the right side of history when he fought with the YPG in Syria against ISIS - he made a serious error in joining the Ukrainian Military to wage war on the Russian speaking majority in the Donbass. Hopefully he will be treated more humanely by the DPR and Russian Forces and not face torture or execution that has been the fate of many captured Russian and DPR troops.

' and not face torture or execution that has been the fate of many captured Russian and DPR troops.' You make out that the Russians are innocent in all this, remember that they are the aggressors, Little small man Putin still says its an army exercise to his people, not a war because he doesn't want the truth getting out to his people, all you have to do is watch Russian Today to understand Russia is oppressed.

@@stevensmith2962 The aggressor is the one who started this war 8 years ago against his fellow citizens. The Ukrainian government killed Russian (by nationality) citizens of Ukraine in the Donbass because they did not support the coup d'état in Ukraine. 15,000 Russians died in 8 years, and your entire "civilized" world didn't care. We don't start wars, we end them. And we don't care what you think about it.

These freedom fighter stories are awesome. I love hearing these and really look forward to more of them. It sucks that a lot of these foreigners that go over to another country like The Middle East and Africa, are normally there just to play "war" or get their adrenaline fix. People like this man and Firat are good examples of people who go over there for a legit reason. Whether you are going over to another country to fight because the enemy killed your family or because you want to document what is going on. It's a really good thing some of these people film everything while they are over in these countries fighting because it's mostly shit that you don't see on mainstream news, you only hear about it. For example the cages and chains in a house where it smells like death and you can tell the chains are for kids. These stories need to be out there and thank you for having these people on your platform to share some amazing and very important stories.

Interesting. I got discharged out of US Navy bootcamp back in 2014 as a result of falling for recruiter lies that resulted in paperwork mistakes which directly led to my discharge. I joined specifically wanting to become a part of Naval Special Operations. My recruiters had other plans, and I was dumb enough to fall for their BS, and the Navy ended up discharging me with the label of “fraudulent enlistment” as a direct result of doing exactly what my recruiters told me to. After that, I fantasized for a few years about going over to help serve in the fight against ISIS, but ultimately felt so worthless as a human-being as a result of my Navy experience/failure, that I felt like I would be of no benefit to the objective there, so I decided that I shouldn’t “get in the way.” The Navy demolished my self-confidence by officially labeling me with fraud, which only happened because I directly listened to the instructions and fell for the lies of my recruiters. I wish it wasn’t, but joining the Navy was a horrible experience for me. Rest In Peace, Brandon Caserta

13 hours? Jesus - HRC is a vile monster. That, And yet, yer boy Trump did more damage than Hillary to the Special Operations community than HRC. Trump's stupidity (about oil - drilling, refining, distributing, where profits flow: about the geography and culture(s) of the Middle East - he really is an incredibly ignorant and stupid scion of 20th C new money kitsch). So this utter Rube gets to be the commander in chief of the world's most powerful military in human history. At that time, and by accident (Obama - accidentally backed into doing an almost textbook perfect application of the standard Green Beret model of cooperation with local indigenous forces as a force multiplier against a common enemy. in Syria (fighting for a genuinely good cause - not just running an arms smuggling operation for assorted fascists and thugs making the world safe for capitalism). Give me the PKK (warts and all) over the CIA, The Clinton's, The Trumps, Bush s, Elon, Jobs, Bezos, etc. etc. etc. Sinjar and Kobanie were genocides and the West was going to (it did with regard to Sinjar - Only the PKK responded positively - of all top tier global players - Occalan's PKK was the "good guy" responding with speed and intention as men were being massacred, women and girls were being mass raped and sold into slavery - real slavery. By accident, Obama ended up helping the PKK (YPG - YPPJ - whatever) defend Kobanie etc. and then team up - with YPJ/YPG acting as the highly motivated, semi-skilled (depends on the unit) light infantry working in cooperation with US spotters, pilots, airmen and women, and sailors etc. of the US military. The strategy was working. Then, in 2017, Trump (needing some good middle east and foreign policy PR) decided to declare the SDF victory in Raqqa as the total victory of ISIS - which was stupid and counter-productive. ISIS (always a joint venture between rump AQI and rump Saddamite intelligence modeled on the predecessor joint venture of Pakistani ISI and proto-AQ and then Taliban in late 1980s), at least the social forces giving rise to ISIS will manifest again in the future. Destroying this virus will be a decades long struggle. Failure to destroy modernity's doppelganger - racist White Supremacy , failure to transition to working class hegemony at end of WW1 or WW2, plus the regression since the 1970s is extremely costly. Bin Laden was a child of Reagan and Thatcher, the Bushes and Clintons and Blairs as much as you and I are. The dudes killed in 13 hours were either in on the grand grift against us, or ignorant rubes helping the enemy and not understanding the harm they are doing. Dumb or dishonest are not good options. Those were HRC's Socom casualties. Objectively (never mind the attitudes of the operators etc.) the SOCOM folks working in Syria were doing jus belli justi. Killing Islamic fascists and promoting radical, egalitarian, green, democratic forces in some of the worst conditions on the planet was brilliant, was genius, was genuinely eudaimonia (human flourishing) - seriously. and Trump tossed that brilliance on the midden dung heep of his presidency. Fuck HRC - FUCK TRUMP - BIJI BIJI PKK!!!

I'm sure a lot of them are fighting because their family was killed by their enemy, just like Firat but for the other side. Anyone who willingly fights for ISIS after knowing about what they are doing to kids and women, has no excuse for fighting with them... you are just pure evil but things aren't always so black and white.

@@nicks3350 I'm in the UK. I'm aware of the story, thanks. My point is not that he's bullshitting. It's actually a tragic tale. Fair play to him I suppose, most regular wannabe fantacists don't get up off their sticky couches. He jumped head long into a mysterious Facebook band of merry men to thwart evil on foreign soil. Gotta be credit in that. Versus being barely employable in civvy street he gets to be action man in somebody else's questionable war instead of selling birthday cards and balloons, being a badly out of shape teenage bouncer, lusting after shady war footage on dodgy websites and craving the opportunity to go film some of his own questionable footage... the guy threw himself down the rabbit hole to become a seemingly unproductive and unremarkable super warrior in a dreadfully unprofessional army he neither respected or succeeded in. He was a draft excluder in many ditches. He barely fumbled around incriminating himself in some alternative extracirricular military work while out of his depth already in no man's land then scarpered home again. Traumatised and a psychologist's wet dream. I just feel sorry for the big guy. Cannon fodder for hire is very sad, if he applied to the British army (I'm certain he did so unsuccessfully, despite his claims) he'd probably have been top potato peeler. The Special Potato Service really missed out on a superstar with our Aiden. Hope he enjoys his valiant Ukrainian benefits and life treats him well. @@nicks3350 Nick, he wasn't a proper qualified social worker. He was a carer. Appointed by the job centre to get him off the dole. Card shop employees/warehouse workers/pub doorman...all minimum wage (now that minimum wage is enforced as previously they'd all be lower). Desperado. Care work and and even a licence to work security on a pub door are all dependent on passing a criminal record check. Aiden buggered that up with his antics abroad as he said. His situation in the UK was dire af. He signed up to escape rock bottom life and seek a little adventure. The boy craved respect and a role in authority. Maybe he gets more of that where he is now with his Ukrainian fiance and a uniform? One thing is for sure... the Russians at the border will be pissing themselves all day watching Aiden 'soldiering' through their binos. He's probably a viral Russian meme by now. When they invade they'll hopefully keep Aiden as a mascot and to feed the ducks and pop to the shop for them while they're kinda busy invading.
