I love the way Fong Sifu moves. This is a master who has done the movements a literal million times, just in the first few years. Wing Chun knows how to fight and train! I learn something every time I meet a brother from this art.

yea...their master's seriously hurt some folks in his younger days.. Wing Chun standard is weapon's art. The hand-to-hand style is to give a general understanding of body movement, hand trapping, retaliation, and striking (stab, slash, chop); so when applied to knife or staff uses you know what to do and can amplify your output.

@@nightowl_ap Wing Chun is taught to exchange information. I learn from my Wing Chun brothers every time I meet them, and I suspect, once in a while, they might even learn something from me. 😊 All martial arts should adopt this principle, and not be shut off to practical techniques from any system.

It seems to me that these weapons would really shine in a crowded drinking den, or on board a ship. On the battlefield? Perhaps not, but then neither did the rapier. Different swords for different purposes, I suppose.

@@zato6226 Luckily, it's about the martial artist, not this or that art. It's not the weapon, but the person wielding it. In my experience, it usually comes down to who has trained the hardest, most correctly, over the longest period. Even in my own excellent sword art, most practitioners don't put in the time, or didn't get it from a true master, and that will catch up with them if it's ever put to the test. Find a good teacher, train hard. That's all one can do.

Great skill on display. However, it is not entirely clear to me whether some of this would actually work in a bladed fight like this.

The guy he is working with is Kevin Lee, who seems to be becoming a good instructor in his own right (plus a really good hearted guy in general). I highly recommend studying with Sifu or most of his students! Sadly I no longer live close enough to do so regularly.

Y’all are gonna have an action murder mystery adventure to avenge your master in the case of his death, right?
@itinerantpoet13412 жыл бұрын
That doesn't really happen these days, but, in the past, yes-death and serious injury was sometimes the result of feuds between schools. The new way is better, but it also allows a lot of unqualified people to teach martial arts. If you're interested in this stuff, make sure you find a qualified teacher like Master Fong.

Why this boy don't use second hand? One knive has a weight about 1kg. Please, show such magic movements with real knives. Good luck :)
@nightowl_ap3 жыл бұрын
It's a pressure control drill. The master is not taking this extremelly seriously, this is almost fun for the sake of fun. You can see the student(who is also a master, i guess) has a nice understanding of the basics, but fails to predict and react to the pressures exerted by the knifes.
@itinerantpoet13412 жыл бұрын
@@nightowl_ap That's what happens when a student learns from their master. My first year on straight sword, when I'd badger my teacher into showing me something "real", I'd get immediately disarmed. 😊

great skills, compliment… but do you think that on a real attack with two knives you have time to think about all this?

No. You are correct. ....This is cool stuff, but it is play.

Just, redirect, open, and strike. With any weapon and fight the prime objective is to redirect an attack to open someone then strike.
@YauRemi2 жыл бұрын
If you're just a novice then no, but there's a reason why repetition is taught in all martial arts so your body just reacts. If you notice the sifu, his expertise with the butterfly swords is beyond thinking and he just does it. If you are familiar with a weapon then you dont even have to think, granted butterfly knives take a greater amount of skill to use than your average longsword or spear. You can give a novice a longsword or spear and they would be more lethal than somebody that is a novice with the butterfly swords.

Idk. I see this guy cutting himself a lot by accident doing those disarms. Sometimes the blade he does disarm flies back into him. And he's not always checking the other blade, which could fly in for a stab. Seems too high risk.

Very nice technique but you need to demonstrate the effectiveness at combat speed. I also practice HEMA so I test all my skills in full combat scenarios wearing full protective gear. There is a big difference between what works in theory and what works in the real world.
@johnbland15854 жыл бұрын
Full combat wearing full protective gear is as close as you can get with Out Really being Real especially with a cutting slashing large knife. As a simple cut can end things. Its more about ho or and acknowling a type of cut or hit Vs a bashing competition. The way some of the modern knights compete. Thats about as close as it gets.

Trust me when I say that there is full speed combat practice in this school, lol. I saw a friend get a broken hand while using padded weapons and wearing lacrosse gloves, that doesn't happen without full speed or strength intent.

i love Fong sifu when it comes to hand-to-hand combat but this knife video is utterly unrealistic, in real life the knife attack is fierce and they absolutely will not follow your "lock" or circular motion..., if you want to see what real knife attack is, search for "prison sewing machine", that's how real people with real intention to hurt each other do, continuously stab with front hand as a barrier, ignore damage on themself, their only intention is to hurt the other more!! when it comes to knife it is not a civilian matter anymore, it is life or death situation, you will get stab and hopefully end the fight before you bleed out (aka stab the other more and he bleed out before you do).
