CSX's Monon Semaphores

Semaphores and street running on CSX's former Monon lines in Indiana in 1996 and 1999. Part 1 is the in area from Linden to Whitesville, IN while part 2 covers the territory from Mitchell, IN south to New Albany and the bridge over the Ohio River to Louisville, KY. At this time the south end was seeing CSX St. Louis to Louisville traffic off the former B&O at Mitchell, where a loco was stationed to pull the trains to and from the former Monon since the connection between the two lines was in the wrong quadrant for a direct move. Soo Line trains also used this route from Bedford to Louisville on former Milwaukee Road trackage rights. The UP power was run-through from St. Louis with CSX crews.

Excellent! I remember the Sunday August 08, 1993 when CSX trains began to ply the rails on the south end again. Sadly now it's all rusting away and hasn't seen a train in several years north of New Albany. With Pillsbury now closed the final revenue run left there on Friday July 28, 2016 and now the line sits silent. Thanks so much for posting this

Being a Local Rail Fan from the Mitchell and Bedford area,I can really appreciate these videos. Since thier are no longer rail traffic through Bedford and very little through Mitchell. I have to seek them out in places like Taswell,Seymour,Crawfordsville and,you get the point. Great video my friend,the days of the signal arms are not to far gone but enough to make an old timer like me,appreciate your video. Bravo Zulu my friend!

I was on either J726 or Q642 from 99-09. That conrail set with a caboose at south Raub was 100% Grant Hammonds with that non stop horn blowing.

Thanks for sharing this. I discovered trains in '92, when towers had long been closed, a few cabooses remaining, South Louisville Shops on the chopping block, some U-boats not ready to quit, the remainder of CSX's rainbow fleet of fallen flags, and Soo Line still making runs. Seeing this is a nice reminder of that time.

Having grown up by this railroad I thought semaphores were pretty common, lol. When I was a kid cars used to travel over that bridge at 25:12 . It had one car lane on each side of the bridge with the railroad tracks in the middle. Now only one lane is fit to use and the only vehicles that ever use it are Norfolk Southern company vehicles.

You know, I have this train DVD titled The Trains of Lafayette, and it showcases railroading around the city with the Monon, Wabash, New York Central, and Nickel Plate. It also shows the Monon in 1994 when it was running down 5th street. Do you have any footage about that?

What was the maximum speed on what used to be the Monon in the 80s and 90s before everything south of Roachdale was abandoned by CSX?

I don't know what the maximum timetable speed was but when pacing them they averaged 30 mph. The track in most places didn't seem to be good for much more than that.

@@fmnut I understand that was due to the outdated 90lbs joined rail still in place. Probably one of few subdivisions remaining that hadn't been replaced by 130lbs welded rail.
