This is a video I made of a CSX train known as the street runner through downtown Tampa Florida going over the historical drawbridge which turns 100 years old in 2015 next year. Known as the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad we see the train go over the bridge at a close view then the bridge raises.

Lovely to see these bridges actually working being either raised or swung as most people who see them, unless operated on a daily basis, would probably never guess that they also move. Also a testament to those who built them that they are still working, absolutely brilliant, thank you forsharing.

That eerie mechanical noise throughout the video was very familiar from my time spent in downtown Tampa, but it took me a few moments to remember it was cars driving over the metal deck of the other bridges in the area.

This is an important video capture! Poking around this bridge on 02/13/2023, I spoke with multiple locals (including a City of Tampa employee) who said that CSX no longer uses this trackage and thus the bridge is permanently locked in the up position.

I have witnessed the freight train crossing that bridge many times since I was a kid! I also like it when the train crosses the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard and Willow Avenue! It is the only four-way railroad crossing here in Tampa! After the train passes, the traffic on Kennedy usually gets the green light!

BTW. I like that you show idiots running around crossing barriers in your intro. People think this is a joke to do they...but it's deadly serious ! I am a retired police officer from Florida (not that far from Tampa , as a matter of fact) When I was still working, the fine for going around a barrier, where you could either hear OR see the train, was $1500.00. No questions asked. It's probably more now...our state is broke and always trying to gouge the taxpayer....but that's another issue all together. Thanx for your videos !

When I was a kid in the 90s my dad would take me to the adjacent Curtis Hixon park (formerly part of the site of the old Tampa Art Museum) and we got to meet and sort of know the bridge tender. He was a very elderly fellow who I only knew by the name of "Brown" and he would park his truck in the gated pen.

Awesome Video Alan! Glad to see that bridge still in use. I noticed there is a restricted speed across the span. Seagull at 4:30- "Look at me, I'm in Millenniumforces movie! Now i'm gonna make sure he hears me!" either that or he was telling trains not to cross because the bridge was going up. The seagull made me laugh!

Nice video. There is a similar type of bridge in Port Huron, MI and every time I go to that city it breaks my heart to think about the past railroads in that location. I always wanted to see that bridge operate, but never got a chance as the line was removed over 20 years ago and the bridge sits there rotting away along with the old ferry docks. Heartbreaking to see the loss of railroads in Michigan as it still continues with CXS removing another line out of Flint, MI, I enjoyed and thank you for posting this video.

Over a century old and still functional because; A) it was designed/built well and B) was properly taken care of. The latter is significant given the bridge's location on the Florida gulf coast. That humid salt air eats metal, especially the old iron and steel of a hundred year old railroad bridge. A salute to those who designed it, built it, and took care of it.

Charles Vanhoose What do you mean? The video shows what happens, the bridge is opened and the boat proceeds through. I'm sure the bridge operator knows when trains are due so won't open the bridge if a train is coming, so any boats wanting to go through will have to wait. The adjacent road bridge is also a drawbridge so it also opens to let boats through.

All that for a one car train, I've seen bridges that swivel 90 degrees to alternate between trains and water craft. That seems a whole simpler than this type of a drawbridge. Think of all the horsepower it takes to lift such a heavy load and how complicated it would be to maintain all the moving pieces. That's quite an achievement to keep it going after so many years. Any replacement parts forget about it
