I've commented elsewhere on my belief that Barenboim is a worthy interpreter of Beethoven, but doesn't begin to understand Schubert. He admitted (I can't recall where I came across that report) that he had neglected that composer (check his discography). I suspect he was quite contemptuous of Schubert as a serious keyboard composer, and considered his music beneath the dignity of such a great pianist as himself.. When I heard the opening bars, my initial reaction wass that this was the best I had ever heard Barenboim playing Schubert. That impression did not survive the middle section (even ignoring the mistake). As for that dreadful mistake, I don't think age can be blamed (I heard Rubinstein when he was 84 play Schubert's longest sonata brilliantly ). This was not a two hour recital, but a 7 minute performance of a single work. He would have had ample time to learn and practise the work for what was an important state occasion and, if he had any doubts, he could have had a score in front of him. This is all consistent with the contempt which I suspect he holds. Schubert is about heart and emotions and sensitivity (and yin if you believe in that concept). There are a number of pianists who bring out these features. The best among them could be the late Radu Lupu.

Don't know why someone chose this piece for the occasion. You can tell the 'dignatories' are bored from the get-go! If your audience is bored from the opening bars ( a real risk, frankly, with so called 'classical music' ... let's be honest) you know you're in trouble. I learned this piece when I was 11 years old, and it was boring then. I'm a big fan of Schubert, but why not something like the Opus 90 G flat Impromptu ... something with more universality, more pathos ... equally good for weddings or funerals?

You really have not understand anything of the magical sound of this outstandingly performed impromptu. That you mentioned that you played this impromptu at the age of 11 eleven, does not say anything, everybody can remark this.

Its not about the notes it's about the interpretation, this is a beautiful piece and perfect for the occasion. You might've learned it at 11, but music like this isn't about the notes it's about the feeling

What an insult !! Daniel Barenboim is one of the greatest pianist/conductor in this world !

@@crypentertv9862 I disagree. He's a big empty musical phony. Always has been. He never touches the profound, but only mimics those who do; and the permanent sneer is to intimidate observers from looking further. He's in this for money, and nothing else. And what's insulting about comparing him to Biden?! Eighty million votes! (Or however many it was, on the night...) The greatest president ever, or since Donald Trump at least.

A prime example that even a Daniel Barenboim should be better prepared and not deliver such a miserable performane. That does not show a lot of respect for Chirac.
