Around 1972/73 my oldest brother rolled his ‘70 beetle and smashed in the top. He drove it that way for about a year until he found another body then he and my brothers swapped out the bodies in the side yard of our parents house. I haven’t seen a bare rolling VW pan since then! This is a great project!

Dear CT, The way you’ve sealed with the chassis of the 1955 VW Beetle looks so much more professional as with rhe chassis of the VW Karmann Ghia but we think the Karmann was more like a school for you for which you your master degree with the Beetle 😂. We think you have to go for a full restoration of the entire car because it will bring you a car with an unbelievable value. We wish you lots of success with the rest of the refit and wish you as well as Cynthia and the rest of your family all the happiness of the world plus we send you ❤️ from the Netherlands. Best regards, Willeke and Dick de Graaff

I watched the entire video and my heart sank at the end when he said, "We're going to keep the original patina." Surely people don't think adding a coat of gloss over rust looks good, ugh.

I agree. Weird infatuation with patina. It looks terrible. I know people with have done it to a restored Road Runner and an old Defender. Shiny rust sitting in pristine undercarriage. It’s dumb.

Surely there are other tastes than your own 😂 I personally love kept patina, especially on a fresh and prestine undercarriage/frame. For me over the top, nuts and bolts-restorations dont do it, since it removes the soul of a old machine. But each to his own. Great video - thanks!

Looking great. It's such a good feeling when you start out with scrap and it ends up looking and being new! Taking an angled reading on the spring plate whilst it's on the stops won't tell you anything. You need to set the angle whilst the plates are not rested on the stop.
@vayabroder729
@vayabroder729 Жыл бұрын
Right on on the spring plate readings; if they’re on the stops you cannot measure anything; they’ll be in the same place all the time. The point of that is to measure the resistance or stiffness of the torsion bars.

Great video and very instructive even without dialogue. I've watched many VW restos and done my own too. One thing I wish you could help us all with, even though it might be hard to do, would be to talk about part costs as you go through the process. No one ever tells how much it costs to do these. Since you are doing the whole thing, it might help others know what they might expect to dole out. I keep a log, but hearing it at points along the way would be great.

Also, 41:11 transmission. Have you run that transmission around, shifted through the gears? If I were you. I’m not, but if I were. I would build a brace for the left side floor pan, and a brace for the steering wheel. Install a seat, and drive that around without the body. And fix all the problems your going to have…BEFORE. You get the body on. And If that weren’t enough…ha ha ha. Was that GL 4 you were putting in that transmission? The books says GL 4 only , due to the type of synchronizers in the transmission. Great job though..

Excellent job, I refurbished a 1956 Chevy Stepside pick-up truck in South Africa recently taking 16 years to complete as all the work was meticulously refurbished just as you have done here. The only exception was that I used a copper based anti-siege grease on all chassis and body nuts and bolts. I sadly sold it last year as I returned to the UK. Keep up the good work

Dear Reader, The Roman Senator Cato always seems to have ended his speeches in the Roman senat with the sentence: "By the way, I'm of the opinion that Carthago have to be destroyed". This is an important and possitive step in the reconstruction of the VW Beetle, very well executed by Mr. CT. Well, done, Sir. By the way, I'm of the opinion that the VW Ghia has to be restored after this project. Once, the Roman Senat decided that they indeed would destroy Carthago. So perhaps my remark will help to restore the VW Ghia in the near future. I do hope so. Michel F. van den Brun Viewer, started to watch the chanel of Mr. CT, at the moment he reconstructed the Ghia.

Thank you CT … I just got my 65’ in my name here in cali.. I didn’t want to start the same project until I had a pink slip for it.. Due to my age I’m going to just put it together and get it running it looks and is just as worn out as your’s was .. I just got some rims for it and a later 1776 alternator engine with the dog house oil cooler.. yesterday I picked up a 66’ front hood and looking for some windwing doors… it has a couple California window doors in it now.. need to find front and rear seats and then I’ll have most of the body stuff except for front and rear bumpers.. hopefully by August I’ll be able to take a cruise with another friend that has a 65’.. thank you for such an awesome series of videos.. I’ll be doing my own but it won’t be as awesome as yours.. it’ll be a quick and dirty put put around towner… too many projects and not enough thyme.. like you, I’m more interested in the mechanical, side sticking with original patina as well.. maybe.. or just grey primer..

Funfact! A Vw Beetle is safer than a Vw Golf 2
@mosfet500
@mosfet500 Жыл бұрын
@@Butterbrotdiesel Simply not true. A 65 Bug didn't even have headrests to stop backlash in rear end collisions. No air bags, no crumple zones, etc. Swing arm rear suspension - yeah it was safer. I'm selling bridges, how many do you want?
@Butterbrotdiesel
@Butterbrotdiesel Жыл бұрын
@@mosfet500 A crash test by the ADAC in 2003, on the 30th anniversary of the Golf series, revealed that the further development of passive safety for occupants in the lighter Golf II was insufficient. Compared to the VW Beetle, a design more than 40 years older with a load-bearing floor panel, it performed slightly worse in the frontal impact.
@mosfet500
@mosfet500 Жыл бұрын
@@Butterbrotdiesel I wouldn't put a battery in a Golf either but that's not the problem. The 65 Bug was an under 1800 pound car, it was never designed to carry a substantial battery bank capable of decent range. I guess you could put in beefier springs, disk brakes and structural braces but I'd never trust it without air bags and it has a swing arm suspension that Ralph Nadar said was "unsafe at any speed". The truth is none of the older cars were worth a fiddle in crash tests. You simply can't make and ICE to EV that compares to today's cars and how much are you really saving in the end? You have an unsafe car that will never compete with a ground up EV like a Bolt that you can get for $26k, will go 259 miles on a charge and has top honors in today's crash tests. Ten years ago retrofits were, maybe worth it, not today, not since the advent of EV's like the Bolt. You could probably pick up a first gen Leaf for under $10k. I'd trust adding more batteries to that than a 65 Bug any day.

First of all, a really cool video! thank you for all your work! I noticed two things that I would like to point out. You use gear oil SAE90 for the steering gear there should definitely no gear oil In the steering gear from the year of construction 1961 it is mandatory to fill half fluid grease. Your steering gear is a later steering gear in which grease belongs and not oil. The second thing that I noticed is that you lubricated the rubber bodies on the rear axle with grease. These rubber bearings dissolve in the grease over time according to VW they should be used completely dry a maximum of a bit of talcum powder. All movement should be within the rubber take place and not let the rubber turn in the housing. As you did it the acid in the grease decomposes the rubber in a very short time, Greetings and thank you very much for your video

Back in the early 70's, while still in high school I built an air cooled square back with the intent of going drag racing with it. Waving my ignorance like a flag two older friends came with me. Good thing they did because back then you had to be 18 to enter the pits. First lesson learned, they raced my car while I watched from the stands. Our class was B/STOCK VW. This heavy, stock 1600cc ran mid 20's, got a class win ( only car in the class and we were told we would be moved up so we don't show up for a free trophy every week ) so we started looking at what the fast guys had. We were working with a 13 pound per cubic inch weight break. I couldn't afford a built 2180cc race motor so I had to think outside the box. I built a 1600cc engine with a cam, flat top pistons, and a 2 barrel Holly. We gutted a 64 bug down to 1400 pounds, still heavy but better than we had. Now they ran 18's with the new car, but we were moved up to A/MOD VW and these guys were running around 13.6's. Then we got a line on a 56 bug that was run in H/G, already lightened much more than we built. We were right on the legal weight break and ran 13.8 first time out. That car sat for a long time and was missing a lot of parts, so we took the rebuilding time to lower the car, get more weight out, and stiffen the mounting forks. As soon as the guys ran the 13 they got called to tech. They were protested for not having a passenger seat. So the next week we showed up with a baby's car seat, properly mounted, with a Frito Bandito doll in a 5 point harness that we got from a sales rep. The last time we got protested was for running funny car front tires ( they lowered the front another 2 inches ). Now they pissed us off. I built a 1600 motor set on kill. In the class we were allowed 1 two barrel or 2 one barrel, with no mention if these barrels had to be carbs or injectors, so I went with a pair of SES mechanical injectors. To top things off I brought a set of heads into shop class to mill them out. I made a cutter to reduce the chambers and it broke, putting a rip in the chamber face. I cut that chamber till it cleaned up and it was TWICE the recommended depth. I needed those heads so I cut them all to match and put it together with dished bus pistons. The next day we aced tech and the 1st pass was 13.00!! We were warned that those heads would be trouble. The 2nd pass was 13.06, the 3rd was 13.40, and the 4th tore the flywheel off the crank, but we loved the look on their faces when we made that 1st pass.

Great job CT. One thing was not clear, and that was whether you installed a new rubber boot/seal over the transmission nose, to seal the opening of where it enters the pan? I hope it’s there, otherwise you’ll need to take the whole transmission off to install it!!

All these folks beautifully restoring old VW chassis with modern sealers and paints…. they’ll likely last 3x as long as factory!

After you rebuild with new seal gasket kit to the Beetle steering gear box. That you may have to add about half-way fill up with gear oil. Before when you took it apart the gear box, the oil did spill. Thanks for doing good in restoring foul up Beetle car that is rust.
