Satellite imagery at the time and location of this severe turbulence encounter indicates significant convective weather (Thunderstorms). One passenger reported that the seatbelt lights were turned on just before the turbulence began. With more frequent severe turbulence encounters it's time to make changes to aircraft safety equipment and the way flight crews manage these unavoidable situations. Far too many passengers are getting hurt and in this case, even worse. The very real, lasting physical injuries and negative psychological effects from experiencing trauma of this nature must be considered also.
