The Las Tunas region lies in the south east of Cuba. Here, the largest sugar crops in the Caribbean grow. The country’s vital export is still harvested manually by the "macheteros" who use machetes to cut the cane. Argelio Marrero Pérez has been working the fields for most of his life. To make sure he withstands the tough work, his wife Lucy cooks hearty meals like pork roast or yellow rice with chicken: Arroz amarillo con pollo.
What's cookin' is about traditional culinary recipes from different European regions.

I was born in Puerto Padre, my family and I came in a stolen boat in 1994 when I was 9 years old. My childhood in Puerto Padre was more like something out of the movie "The Goonies" than anything else. I have yet to return to my island, but one day I hope to do so. I have family in all the places that were mentioned here and they are all worked the land at some point in there lives or continue to do so. This video brought back so many memories of a childhood, that even though we didn't have much, everyday was an adventure, whether it was playing handball in the middle of the street or in the actual national baseball stadium, tops, marvels, flying kites, making pea shooters out of cloth pins, sling shots, even our own scooters which we called "chivichanas", playing hide and seek in forests, fishing from the pier, fighting fishes, raising parakeets, spending weeks in beach cabins made of lumber in our amazing white sand beaches, those were my golden years. Thank you for this video.

sage0187 Hello. I’m from Louisiana in the USA and my ancestors came from the Canary Islands of Spain (Las Islas Canarias/los isleños) and I heard that many of the Guajiros descend from isleños either in part or fully. Can you confirm this by any stories you’ve heard from your people about the Canary Islands or isleños? I know many isleños settled Cuba and especially in the countryside from what I’ve read. Thanks.

This makes me very nostalgic. My grandpa is from Las Tunas province. I have his love for the ground and growing food, and I keep and cherish my grandmas sofrito recipe- and yes, cumin is LIFE. They’re both gone now, but the food stays with my family. Food is the best inheritance. My grandpa said he’d never set foot in Cuba again while communism was present and it’s sad that he never did.

They have a full life, they are proud of their work, have a large and nice family. That all often is missing in western civilisation where you run after the money to get more stuff. Families are smaller and we spent less time with relatives. I think it is one of our delusions to be sad for others who have obviously a good life, only because by our standards they have less material values. Sure they too want progress as the women hoped for new buisnesses, while traditional hard work is replaced by machines. Change can be tough, we in the west will see the exact same thing happen again to us most likely with the upcomming replacement of workforce through A.I.'s , then we will have lots of time for our families ^^

Such lovely people. There was a time when Cuba was the best country to live. That may come as a surprise to many. Cuba has survived and is not starving despite the sanctions and embargoes. They have one of the most sustainable lifestyle.

Wow, "I'm a man but not a macho." What a wonderful expression he made and what a fortunate woman. He has great respect for his wife and himself. That little baby is being given such a gift of love, food, attention, affection. No Beechnut, Gerber, processed and package 'specialities' here. Honest, nutritious, flavorful food. They may not have a lot materially but these people are so rich in the ways that truly count. Sorry this comment is so long but I am writing as I watch. The work they go through, to feed their families, to provide, is amazing. They have much to be proud of. It is refreshing to see humble, kind, and giving people who live their lives with such grace is a revelation. His wife certainly takes to heart Proverbs 31:10-31. A blessing.

@@kimquinn7728 Sure maybe in Cuba, but in the West or modern nations men are disposable and women initiate 80% of divorces and with the #METOO shit show its safer to stay away from females. Dont hire, mentor, train, date, marry, or cohabit with females. Marriage absolutely does not benefit men.

It's interesting to see how similar the food is to the cooking in the big island right across the Caribbean from Cuba, Ayiti. In Haiti the rice plus beans dish is called "diri avec poi colet" (rice with stuck beans). I note that with the fresh sofrito that they make it is more simpler than the Ayisien or Dominican one. Which has scallion (spring onion), garlic and hot peppers but also includes parsely , black pepper, adobo and other ingredients. I think it's time I finally found a good Cuban restaurant and sample the classics!
