GeneaVlogger, Thank you for the review. You're insightful and nuanced when reacting to videos and I like that. I appreciate you shining a light on this little part of the world, which has its unique history. I might have to make a 2021 update video, since this is out now. I've dug a bit deeper since, but now I dread the editing that comes with that lol. Thank you and I wish you great things.

Glad you enjoyed the review! I've had multiple comments telling me how much further you dive into your ancestry, so I added a few of your other videos to the list of reactions for the future. It's always wonderful to see someone really using their DNA results to truly uncover their family history! All the best!

Oh, man, you don't even know what you've stumbled into... I consider the gentleman in the original video (Rock N Woodworks) to be a very good friend of mine, and since the original video was posted, he's basically dedicated his life to researching his family. I'm talking extensive, intense research. He has cousins in Spain who are helping him from over there, and his tree has become enormous. I would highly suggest reaching out to him, as I think his is a fascinating story, and one that I think your viewers would very much enjoy. I've been privileged to witness his discoveries over the years, and the many things he's discovered about his family and himself are amazing.

His history is pretty mapped out, so this probably isn't a reason for the French connection. During the Napoleonic years, when Haiti won its independence from France, French-Haitians left Haiti for Cuba. At the time, both the Spanish and French fleets are destroyed at Trafalgar by the British. Migrating to Cuba, where their agricultural skills are helpful, is a better choice than going to France during the war with Britain. Hate to bring up racism, but this was the 1800s, so French-Haitians being white, were welcomed to mingle with White-Cubans and add to their demographics. Sidenote: Huge reason why Louisiana Territory was sold to the USA by Napoleon was because of the loss of Haiti as a colony. At the time, Louisiana was just a place for collecting raw materials to support agriculture in Haiti. With no Haiti, no raw material business in Louisiana.

I'm Cuban and had the AncestryDNA test done. My recent updated results are 97% European, 2% lndigenous and 1% African from Senegal. My European DNA is mostly from Spain and Portugal and a very small amount from Scotland and Sardinia. Two of my grandfathers were from Galicia, Spain and 7 of my great grandparents were from Galicia, Castilla La Vieja (currently Castilla & León) the Canary lslands and Navarre, Spain. My one great grandfather who was born in Bayamo, Oriente Cuba had ancestors from the Canary lslands as well as a Taíno lndigenous ancestor and an African one according to what l was told by my family.

Cuban culture has a Spanish base, but the West African cultural contribution is far more than a component. I would call Cuban culture a pretty even mix of Iberian (and here we're talking principally about Iberians from the Canary Islands) and West African. Puerto Rico is very similar and it's this mix of Iberian and West African that gives these islands their unique cultures

The predominance is Spanish culture though, I think you have to remember that a lot of cultural was forcefully integrated for nationalist purposes in many latam areas to promote to illusion of celebrating diversity. when black music and religion was persecuted or looked down as satanic in countries like cuba and brazil, can you really say that the majority of the population has those things as their culture? Racial differences can also collide with culture, black people obviously more likely to have african cultural remnants more present.

@@joaokowalski9736 while insightful, the cuban culture isn’t a set thing, it’s a diverse mix. west african contributions to the culture of a spanish country will, evidently, withhold predominantly spanish culture, but are still a sizable factor in our culture. im a new gen cuban and can tell you that one of the biggest religions on the island is afro-cuban/caribbean. i understand your intentions weren’t to downplay the culture but west african cultural contributions are still a large factor in cuban roots despite the strongman argument you presented

16:15 Southern Italy, Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica were until the early 18th century part of the Crown of Aragon, Aragon being one of the crowns that joined to create the country of Spain. About endogamy, it doesn't seem to be much of an issue in his case: 1 of his gp came directly from Spain, as did 5 out of 8 of his ggp, so clearly his family hasn't been "isolated" in Cuba for many generations. (If there was some endogamy, it would be back in Spain, in the small communities from where his ggp came.)

Can take it even further back. When Al-Andalusia was up there as one of the richest parts of Europe. They would hire a lot of non-Iberian merceneries. This included tons of Slavs, Italians etc. Pretty much anyone who wanted to make some money. These people then would land their roots in Spain. But that is going back 1000 years. lol.. Well then going even further back there is Rome and Carthage, both had colonies in Sicily.

They shouldn't distinguish between Spain and Portugal. We're too similar, and actually, "Portuguese" are originally from Northern Spain, Galicia, Asturias and León. It is just throwing all people from former Spanish Kingdom of León under Portuguese, when in any case it would be the opposite.

This is because phenotype doesn’t equal genetics. You can be a very white looking person and have TONS of native and African ancestry. And brown skin can look very African but have tons of European ancestry. Also cuba is much bigger so it’s more mixed. But like Cuba is bigger we tend to have a larger white population than DR or PR. Lord of Dominicans similarly to Cubans have lord of white ancestry because originally DR was a very white country. Until they were conquered by the Haitians

Great video from you both. Gracias.👍👍 He communicates so well. The family rumors do hold some truth. 💕It can be motivation, inspiration or an obsession and all are good. He is really getting into the research too. ¡Bravo! Wonder if his Y chromosome is the Italian one, the first to sail to Cuba. A Cuban told me, outside of Cuba, as late as 2010, that education and benefits like healthcare, are for all, but the so-called 'races' experience separation in daily life. That maybe explains a predominant Spanish Cuban heritage, if that is traditional and expected by the family. There were possibly some arranged marriages. Some are even still unaware of the separations between their different population groups. I experienced this, in the US in 1995. It was like going back in time, but that WAS, back in time. The cultures all spoke English but did not communicate with each other unnecessarily. Spanish speakers also lived and opened shops in mostly one vicinity but the whole world is/was not doing this and the Cuban man I met married a German citizen. Yeah, DNA!

Those Ancestry DNA tests that differentiate between Spanish and Portuguese are confusing a lot of people about their origins. In most places that were colonized by the Spanish, such high percentages of Portuguese ancestry makes no sense. They should be interpreted as coming from people of Spain's regions bordering Portugal, such as Galicia, Leon, Zamora, Salamanca, Extremadura or western Andalusia, whose genes are more related to those of the Portuguese than to those of the rest of the Spanish.
@goodaimshield1115
@goodaimshield1115 2 жыл бұрын
Those genes are actually "originally" from North Spain, Galicia and Asturias. Genetics go in a vertical axis North to South. Portugal was populated by people from Galicia, Asturias and Leon, current Spanish regions, that's why their genetic is Northern Spanish. And of course all Spanish territories of the former Kingdom of León down to Andalucía get the same genetics.

To counter fears of another Haitian Revolution (but in Cuba) the Spanish crown got western European peasants mostly Spaniards from the Canary Islands to settle through out the country side of Cuba. Cuba was also a pretty racist society and racial endogamy, especially among newly arrived Spaniards was quite. Even today Cuba has a much higher racial endogamy among whites than even places like Brazil. So even among solely colonial descended Cuban whites, having no admixture at all wasn't uncommon. Not to mention that after independence Cuba received more than a million immigrants from Europe mostly Spain. Add to this the fact that the bulk of the exile community was white or predominately white, his results are not surprising at all and often expected..

He ran away from Russia at the age of 13. Sent the next three years working his way across Europe, finally hopping aboard a ship in France headed to England. Sadly, when he landed in England (probably Dover), the Immigration Dept. could not spell out his last name and dubbed him down as John Brown. Very very common action in those days. Sadly, despite us having a fair bit of oral history from him, we do not have his original name. Any ideas?

If the paper trail cannot be recovered, DNA is probably your only option. Use a test that integrates with family trees (Ancestry DNA or something similar). The more of your immediate family that also tests the more likely you will be to zero in on those roots from Russia.

My parent’s were born in Cuba, but my paternal grandfather was from Spain and so was my maternal grandfather was also from Spain. My great grandmother was English and my ancestry shows a high percentage in Spain giving the Iberia about 74 percent with England at 16 percent and the rest is French, Irish, Sardinia, North Africa and senagal at 1 percent. I did get my community in Cuba, but stating that I had family that immigrated to Cuba from Spain. I must sone grandparents that arrived in cuba in the late 1700’s because I do get five percent indigenous cuba which I would add to Spain because ancestry does not test for tanio. So, this is the only matter that I question on my dna test, since the reference panel is coming from the living with a long history in one place. That 5 percent cuba is divided by both parents. I look very Mediterranean and have very fair skin and my siblings look more English with even fairer skin, so I question how accurate the dna from Cuba really is. I just know that my roots definitely start in Spain.

GeneaVlogger , the Portuguese and Spaniards are far from being as similar as you think , they never separated the DNA results because Portugal with only 10 0000 inhabitants was a smaller market to target. The the pre-Roman peoples that inhabited what it is today Portugal , Galicia and Spain were different. The callaeci and Lusitani inhabited both , Portugal and Galicia and that's why the Spaniards with Galician ancestors appear as Portuguese. A study by the Complutense University of Madrid and Coimbra University in Portugal concluded that the Spaniards that are closest related to the Portuguese are from Madrid region and the Basque country but that their African paternal lineages are completely different. This Cuban friend 26% Portuguese is most likely from his Galician ancestry because the Galician and the Portuguese are very similar and usually considered the same people that speaks two variations of the same language. Take a look at this of the pre-Roman peoples of Iberia. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hpqHoqp_rNOcYI0.html

I think German Americans make up the largest group in the USA, so I suppose he could’ve rolled with German as a base 😂. But yes it is really rather regional, here in New England, it’s mostly Irish, with some vestige of Scottish and English from our colonial past.

According to the US census bureau, the largest claimed ancestry is German then Irish then English but actual ancestry is English then German then Irish. Most English Americans don't claim their ancestry or fill in "American"
@abcw114
@abcw114 2 жыл бұрын
@@fyanle1382 I've read that, too, and it makes a lot of sense. For many people, their most recent English ancestor arrived in the colonial era. Unless you grew up with your family history, you probably don't know their names, when they arrived or where they were from. You might realize by your grandparents' names that that they're English, but it's not as formative to your identity. If have ancestors who immigrated closer to or in the 20th century, you are more likely to know about it. There were Germans in North America very early, but I imagine the awareness of German ancestry is more common among descendants of 19th century German immigrants.

There is a lot of history between the Irish and the Spanish going back to the 1500s when well-to-do Irish families sought protection from the Catholic Church and the king in Spain, and many of these people ended up in the New World including Cuba very early on. There was also an influx of Irish people in the 1800s during the potato famine. In Cuba there is a very famous street and old Havana called Calle O’Reilly (O’Reilly Street, named after Alejandro O’Riley, who was a senior military official in Cuba). As far as Italian, I’m wondering if there’s some other story behind that as well, because I, as well as many other Cubans, who have taken the ancestry, DNA test, both of my parents included, are getting Italian as part of their results. I personally have 70% Italian and I have no idea where that came from either. It’s probably recombinant DNA but it’s kind of suspicious that a lot of people I know are getting those results. Another thing that’s common for Cubans to get which was not on this guys results is north African ancestry from the moors that inhabited Andalusia. My dad and my mom have a bout close to 10%. Both of them have Galician roots and in 1492 when the moors were being forced to convert or leave Spain, the ones that decide to stay went up to the north west, or into Portugal and the highest percentage of Berber or north African DNA is from those areas, up to 30%. then it’s like a gradient going south east, the average at the most south eastern portion being about 10%.

Don't forget that a lot of Cubans have Canary Islander ancestors, and so the North African results will come from the Guanches that were the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands. I myself have 6% North African ancestry due to 2 of my great grandparents being from the Canary Islands.
@sosalty701
@sosalty701 8 ай бұрын
@@lissetteleg9070 Actually I did some research on that because it came up a lot on my results. There was a study done on Berber and Jewish DNA in Spain, and they found up to 30% Berber DNA in NW Spain (eg. Galicia etc) and as they went east/south there was less and less down to 10%, indicating where the Moors migrated to during the Reconquista. You would think they left, but they went more towards Portugal. Whereas Jewish DNA was pretty equal across the country. Guanche DNA is actually indicated a little differently. Maybe because of the amount of time they were there, their DNA might have been isolated, but not sure of this.

@@sosalty701 Berbers and Moors have nothing to do! Berbers were the original habitants of North africa for centuries and they were mediterranean people, NO african. Later, the moors or arabs come from Middle East/Arabia in VIII century. Also in the north african region were introduced some negros black subsaharian due to the arabs commerce with them for slavery. So the transformation to actual moors magrebies in terms of history is recent. Anywhere the actual north african have majority of berber amazigh origin in at least 70% of their genes, the look as moors maybe is for the mix of 5% black subsaharan, if they don't have this part they will look as european.

Don't you think by base he meant founder culture rather than current composition? The US would not be what it is if it hadn't been for the English and then generally British early settlement. We speak English, and our institutions are British. The ethnic makeup of the country over the past 300 years has become much more diverse. I've seen polls that show German is the majority ethnicity in the US now, but I think people who just identify as American may not identify with an ethnicity from abroad, so English may be underreported. In any case, I don't think the English or British base should be underestimated or dismissed lightly. We are firmly nestled within the rest of the English-speaking world with which we share our values in addition to our language however diverse we may be.

Even the cubans who look like him could have african or other minor admixture in them. It wouldn't be absurd to assume there's an African or Native admixture to the average cuban, just like with Brazilians (like myself) most people assume the common Brazilian would be mixed: Are they wrong? no. but that doesnt mean there aren't lots of Brazilians who are/ look fully European. There are definitely more Brazilians (i cant speak for other latin american countries on this matter) who are fully European than fully African or fully native American.

I had a coworker who is Cuban her skin was white but she had dark eyes and dark hair and look Asian , her husband is Mexican and Irish he has brown eyes /brown hair and their kids came out with blonde hair and blue eyes even though they are mix and neither parent is full white or has blonde hair or blue eyes . Genetics can be weird sometimes just because a person looks %100 white doesn’t mean they are especially if you come from countries in Latin America where intermarriage was acceptable even in colonial times.
