The issue Jamal has is the 50/50 comment. Puerto Rican people were part of the early HipHop community but Hiphop was not of or part of the Puerto Rican community. This is why they were minorities in it originally. Puerto Ricans from that age will tell you that Hiphop was viewed as behaving like a Black American and most definitely black. It was also looked at as sign of selling out by Puerto Ricans. Lets stay on topic because people jump from one to another one whenever discussing this.

Lord Jamar had a GREAT point recently: All of this where your from America, Jamaica, Puerto Rico etc. wouldn't even be in the discussion of who created Hip Hop if we all just seen ourselves and eachother as just BLACK.........The problem is, Latinos ( SOME not all)...wanna walk, talk, and ACT Black/mimic Black American culture, and use the N word, and claim Hip Hop...but they wanna DENY that thier BLACK....."I no Black...I Dominican". Stuff like that. So if you dont want to IDENTIFY as Black ( even though they ARE Black), then dont take credit for BLACK EXCELLENCE. Its that simple.

I remember when I use to get bullied in elementary school by the bigger Black kids, and it was my PUERTO RICAN and DOMINICAN homeboys who seen me get jumped/beat the f*ck up and they jumped in to help me fight, and made sure I got home safe, I remember my Puerto Friend spending the night at my house, I spent the night at his, when I got kicked out my parents house my Spanish friend let me sleep over thier house . In 88 it was so united in the NYC sonically, that even Italians, Irish, and Russians were Hip Hopping. The term "Ni***r" was spoken around NYC streets since the 70's. The Rock Steady Crew was not founded by American Blacks. Doug Lazy, (Black American) The Jungle Brothers, (Black Americans) were major in the Hip House scene -- they were the ones that watered down Hip Hop, not the Puerto Rocks. If you were born in the mid 70's, 80's & 90's -- you can never ever tell the real factual history of Hip Hop in New York City.

I think the real problem is that you don’t understand what you’re talking about when we referred to hip-hop the genre. The drums which we all know our complex polyrhythms specifically multiple kicks followed by snares is what we’re calling funk rhythms, but in hip-hop, you can put those same rhythms over any style of music in the world, including Puerto Rican music. And very often those hip-hop drums have Latin percussion in them. That’s why the first ever hip-hop album had Puerto Rican percussionist that’s where you hear the Puerto Rican influence.
@uptownbladebrown
@uptownbladebrown Ай бұрын
@@griddilla2374 only way theres latin percussion is if a latin rhythm was used while playing a drum. The use of a conga drum isnt latin percussion. Black Americans dont use latin rhythms and we have a different technique when playing drums. Theres no latin influence in Black American music.

"Hip Hop is 100%African American creation/culture" There's no history of rhyme in Africa, China and Europe initiated rhyme, rhyming couplets used in rap stem from 14th century England with Chaucer and Shakespeare (iambic pentameter) no such thing as cultural appropriation, everything belongs to everyone

The creators are still creating aka BLACK AMERICANS. and the guest CULTURE VULTURES, aka latinos/non blacks, are still doing what they've always done, and that is copy steal and try to take credit for our creations What have you Latinos created since you were 50/50 in the creation? Everything innovative in hip-hop comes from BLACK AMERICANS. Latinos haven't created anything new in hip-hop. No new dances, no new rap styles/genres, no new slang, no new fashion trends. The list goes on & on.
