“in cuba, EVERYTHING is alive with music and color.” i know this is a comedy sketch, but i was instantly reminded of when i was 16 and stayed with my uncle and his wife in cuba for a week. they live in havana, the capital. i had never, ever in my life, been in such a quiet place before. it was both a nice change of pace and an unsettling reminder of the country basically being in limbo.

If Cuba is all romance, parties, dancing and a 24 hour celebration...why would anyone leave? Maybe crippling poverty, silencing of dissent by way of midnight incarceration, executions, sham "elections" and government corruption puts a buzzkill on the party.

I hate when people insist on the Hispanic pronunciation of some name when they're otherwise pasty white Americans. I had a A.P. PolySci teacher back in highschool who used to pronounce "Nicaragua" by rolling her tongue on the 3rd syllable....."Nica-LOG-gwah" when discussing Latin American Communist Military coups de tate. I was like Nica-PLEASE!.....We're in South fucking Carolina, when did you suddenly become Carmen Miranda???

no po Good point, but I had a teacher who DID pronounce "Nicaragua" correctly. The problem is, when a North American English speaker uses the correct, local ethnic pronunciation, of one proper noun while otherwise having a North American accent, it can come off as either pretentious or condescending.

oh my god... as a cuban this is pretty fuckin accurate, especially the bit about them being "poor but with spirit" or whatever, people can be so annoying. actually do visit cuba though, it really helps the people there, just don't be a tool about it afterwards.
