I really appreciate your honesty from 10:35 onwards Jamie. Honestly thought I was losing my mind at the huge amount of hype surrounding this update, only for Steinberg to add 1 free instrument and 3 instruments you need to pay for. Yes, there are other bug fixes in this update, but I imagine users were hoping for a more substantial response to the release of LP for iPad. I didn’t consider how big a win this is for Android users though, great point!

Yeah for the Android guys I mean, this is huge! In fact it has made me think about revisiting Android and doing a couple of videos because even though the couple of livestreams I did with Android were disastrous because of the latency issue, they get quite a few views. There’s a market there for sure. But for iOS users with our 20 billion AUV3’s…. It’s a bit pants. The sounds though dude - the DX7 sounds in particular are so good - and I’ve got a TX7 here. Takes me back - I feel 15 again!!!! 😂

Thanks for this, Jamie. Especially for your comments about the long term missing features. I used Cubasis from the start of my iPad music journey and I much prefer Cubasis over Logic Pro for iPad in terms of user experience and ease of use on iPad but, yes, the lack of a tempo/time signature track in Cubasis 3 is one reason I now do most of my recording in Logic Pro on my Mac.

I’m seeing a lot of comments like this today Colin. It’s a shame. Cubasis 3, once Steinberg got it stable, was such a great step forward for mobile music making. But it hasn’t moved forward for too long. I’m sure Steinberg have heard us on this now so it will be interesting to see what happens. ✌️

Another feature that Steinberg has ignored for a long time is an improvement to the way that multiple takes are handled. If you loop a section and record multiple takes on a track, it plays all of the takes rather than just the most recent one. People have complained about this for years, and it's one of the main reasons I don't use Cubasis more often.
@JamieMallender
@JamieMallender 8 ай бұрын
I’ve never liked the multiple take approach so it’s not something that has ever really bothered me be but I’m very aware of peoples complaints about this and I do agree that it’s something they ought to develop. For me though, I find I get a far better end result doing a take at a time - it’s just how I work - I’m always pushing myself to be able to execute the performance without comping, timing, tuning. It’s important to me. ✌️

Thank you much for this Jamie. We started our iOS DAW journey on Cubasis 3, then jumped on Logic as soon as it became available because it had features Cubasis was sorely lacking - probably the case for a lot of people jumping ship as you said... BUT - we got an iPhone 13 added to the studio recently and am finding that it operates much better as a "tiny DAW" than GarageBand does. And no Logic on iPhone, so it's a great solution. For that reason, we're excited about any new updates for Cubasis 3 and am interested in re-integrating it into the studio. It's all very individual how people prefer their setups, and we hope others out there are re-evaluating it too!

Cubasis 3 is great on a phone! You know, back when I was on an iPhone 8 it handled Cubasis 3 better than my iPad did at the time. Sadly it only had a small memory but it was super useful for starting projects. I keep meaning to use the phone more ins my demos because I think people like to see it and Cubasis 3 runs amazingly well on this iPhone 14 Plus. Mental when you think about it.

With most iPads getting M1, M2, M3 processors, Cubase for iPad is now very possible. Just imagine the future workflow between the Mac/PC and iPadOS. It would be seamless.
@JamieMallender
@JamieMallender 5 ай бұрын
This is something I wonder about often. I use Cubase 13 Pro on the desktop but do a lot more production on the iPad. I would love to see full Cubase on the iPad. My M1 beats the crap out of my desktop - and my desktop is better than machines a lot of people use for music production. But I think there are 2 concerns. The first is purely about real estate. How would Cubase be redesigned to fit all of that information and all those deep dive menus on an iPad sized screen? And, the price. In my opinion, iOS music is held back because the big names don’t port the well known big production apps over from desktop because they don’t think it is worth it financially. This is because on iOS there is a culture of cheap and cheerful apps and when something amazing comes along that costs a little more there is outrage. iOS musicians would expect it to be cheaper than on desktop and then freak out every time a new version comes out and you have to pay to upgrade. In time of course, this will all change but it will take time and this is why I don’t think we’ll see Cubase just yet. I don’t have any insider knowledge about that though - it’s just my thoughts - and I have been known to be wrong.

@@JamieMallender Steinberg always seems to find an innovative way to do things and when I look at what Apple did with Logic Pro on iPad my ideas just flow. Like I know Steinberg’s version of a professional mobile DAW would be insane. I also compare what Blackmagic Design did with Divinci Resolve OMG !! Never thought possible with such a large interface from desktop to iPad would this even work. They’ve even just released dedicated controller for color grading on your iPad. I feel like this is a huge miss for Steinberg if they don’t get pass the Cubasis years. I love Cubasis personally use it all the time but it just leaves so much more to be desired.

I see a lot of complaining in the comment section. People kind of forget what is to record on tape recorder. Now, coming From FL Studio it feels kinda strange the way piano roll works. I am not saying it's worse or better but switching from one to the other is like learning a new language. I like the chord programing feature on Cubasis. It's brilliant. In a minute I had programed an unique chord progression and could play it with one finger. Forget about AI. This is better for me. I already know few tricks how to write unique chord progression. I just think it's brilliant I can use Cubasis to create the frame of a song in seconds. I don't know if people realize the potential there. Just this feature alone is worth for me getting the Cubasis. I can heve all the pads and chord stabs figured and recorded in no time. It would take me forever to set up something similar in another program it's just not even worth trying.
@JamieMallender
@JamieMallender 3 күн бұрын
I guess some people never recorded in a proper studio or to actual tape. I think with piano rolls, you get used to one so a new one is a bit frustrating just because it is different. Yes, the chord pads are ace! ✌️✌️
@aspirativemusicproduction2135
@aspirativemusicproduction2135 3 күн бұрын
@JamieMallender I didn't learn how to properly play drums or piano so everything that isn't guitar or singing is heavily edited in piano roll. But that's what it is. Either record just guitar or try to have full production with drums and everything. At least drums. I've been using FL Studio since it was barely more than drum machine. Now I am experimenting with Cubasis. It doesn't seem to record multiple tracks when on loop but that's not an issue to me. Also doesn't seem to be able to multiply midi by dragging. It kinda has vintage look and isn't very visual. I messed with it for two days. Hopefully something good come out of it. 🙂❤️🍀
@JamieMallender
@JamieMallender 3 күн бұрын
@aspirativemusicproduction2135 Steinberg have always keep their software plain looking. They don’t provide those kind of tools that throw loops and samples and midi parts and ideas at you. They provide a blank page for you to paint on with your own creativity. I like that. Both midi and audio duplicate if you drag the handle on the right hand side of the part. Cubasis 3 isn’t designed to loop record. ✌️✌️

Great demo and analysis Jamie. I totally agree with your criticisms; I asked them about the tempo track about 4 years ago and they implied it was coming soon...... Very disappointing. I'm stoked that Halion has come across in some form, the DX7 stuff whilst nice is covered by KQDixie & King of FM (which is free), similarly I'm good for pianos 😂. To me the update feels like a kneejerk reaction to Logic coming to iPad and what they've done is to try to level up to Logic rather than leading the way on mobile DAWs, something they used to be able to boast, but now no longer. FWIW I'll stick with CB3 on the iPad and use Logic on the desktop where I need to get the orchestral VSTs. But it's very much "nice sounds, but meh" I'm afraid.

Thanks for the video, Jamie. I also want to add another feature missing forever in Cubasis which is seeing the waveform while recording (not just seeing it after you finish recording). It matters for many reasons, one of which is seeing you're not too loud or too quiet. So for now, unless I'm missing something - If I'm recording something longer than a short loop - I need to do a test recording first just to see the levels.

Great sound demo and overview Jamie of these new IAPs. But yes, I agree with you on the lack of a Tempo track, search function… and other popular requests. Been waiting too long for it and it is still not there. I like Cubasis 3 a lot, but yes Logic Pro for iPad does have these things. And really makes me wonder if Steinberg really doesn’t pay attention to what their users actually need. It irks me beyond words that there is no tempo track nor search function and is really making me consider to make the move to Logic Pro eventually if Steinberg refuses to add these things.

@@JamieMallender Yes we will have to see. I did buy these cool new synths though, because they sound phenomenal and for now I am still mostly a Cubasis boy hahah 👍👍 It has treated me well with most of my productions. But there already have been songs that i produced for which i was forced to record it in Garageband for Mac, simply for the fact that it supports tempo changes. And there are more tracks that i need to record with tempo tracks, so again i won’t produce those in Cubasis and will have to most likely do them in Logic Pro. Steinberg is really starting to push users away to other DAWs by not implementing basic features that people really need.

For Android users, it is big. That being said, I use to start songs while traveling for work. I send the MIDI out, reassign instruments, and finish it on a computer and/or MPC. Working on any tablet is too restrictive for me. Not enough power and too small of a screen size.

Hey Jamie Duuudddeee. Great and honest video. For all it's plusses, Logic still fails at some very basic features that other iOS DAWs have, it isn't just Cubasis that is lacking. I get the appeal of Logic but it offers me nothing I need or don't already have. I'm also someone that doesn't like subscription software. I don't see me switching from Cubasis to Logic any time soon, if at all. Anywho, I picked up Halion this morning and for me it's worth it for the guitars and drums. The other sounds are a bonus but it's also greatly appreciated that they added a full set of general midi sounds. Far superior to the default sounds in Cubasis which are all a bit synthy IMO. I don't think I'll bother with the other two IAP's as I already have the DX7 patches in another synth and while nice, Neo FM doesn't seem to offer anything worth it to me. Maybe when it's on a good sale. Am I right that Steinberg do Cubasis feature updates in the spring and other updates in the winter? That would explain why no features were added this time and we can keep our fingers crossed for the next update. With Logic's release they don't really have an excuse to hold out on those long awaited features anymore. They need to match tempo (get it?) with other DAW's.

I get it 😂 Since launch, Steinberg have pretty much done a big update twice a year with the occasional supplemental one with fixes. I think they are usually summer and then December. Steinberg do big updates rather than lots of little ones and they Implement these things very well. But this time they left it 10 months which had people worried. ✌️

Hi James. Steinberg have an updated version of the importer available. I haven’t used it yet but it is meant to map the new Cubasis instruments to appropriate things in Cubase. Can’t wait to try it. The Halion download is 1.8 GB. Let me know if you have any probs. ✌️✌️

Reviewing one or two of these comments and on other fora, it’s almost as if Steinberg sat on their @rse until it looked as though people were turning away from their product, then suddenly produce a very polished Hal instruments bank etc. That’s a bit cruddy, if it is what’s happened. Also I might have preferred if these were Audio Units - am I right, these only work inside Cubasis, thus making them ‘proprietary’ instruments? I use GarageBand on my iPad Pro M1 an awful lot, and because I eschew over-technical stuff (like busses I mean!), GB suits me, and is why I flogged off my PC Cubase 9.5 some time ago. So I feel Cubasis is really pretty good, but do turn to others for an in-depth and fully-formed opinion on its technical capabilities, and comparisons with the likes of Logic Pro. I suppose then, this is the way to turn it into a competition, by making their instruments non-AU. Lastly, it maybe seems that Cubasis 3.6 despite having some issues as all DAWs do, is so capable, Steinberg may be pressing gently on the brake? Not wanting it to properly compete with Cubase on the more traditional laptop or computer platforms. That’d be a shame. Thanks for your view. Have a fantastic 2024 if you can everyone. Or, just start out by hating it already in the dying days of 2023. Works for me. !

I think what we always have to remember is that the iOS market is still very small and not particularly profitable. The staff at Steinberg work incredibly hard but they’re only going to pour a limited amount of resources into Cubasis 3 from time to time because of the aforementioned reasons. They may have felt that they were far enough ahead and that they could leave it for a while, but they’ve left it too long. I think they’ve got the message about that now so we’ll have to see where they go next with it. I think it would be awesome if the new instruments were AUV3 and could be used in other DAWs but that then means more apps to maintain when clearly they are having enough difficulty dedicating enough time to what they have. I don’t think they are afraid of it getting too good and too close to Cubase because it’s a very long way off and Steinberg are the originators of the DAW. I’m sure they want to have the best iOS DAW but right now on iOS the software isn’t moving anything like as fast as the technology because it’s a tiny market.

@Elwaves2925
@Elwaves2925 8 ай бұрын
I assume you mean 'beats' not 'bears', unless Yogi is in the house? 😁 I know you were asking Jamie but personally for me, CB3's user interface beats Logic by a long way. CB3 also has midi export and last I checcked Logic didn't. I ran out of memory easily with one midi import in Logic (with no real way to avoid it) while CB3 handled it fine. There were other factors but these came straight to mind and that's not allowing for the single price vs constant subscription aspect and subscription will always lose out for me.

Thanks for watching my friend! Here’s my list - Cubasis 3 Advantages Over Logic Pro For iPad. 1. Cubasis 3 works on older, less powerful devices, and iPhones and many Android devices and projects can be bounced around between all of those platforms with 100% compatibility - and of course, I can send a project from any of those devices to Cubase on desktop. 2. Cubasis 3, on a more powerful iPad with Multi Core processing engaged handles a large project containing a lot of AUV3’s far better than Logic Pro For iPad does. 3. I suffer random crashes fairly often in LP4iP which I almost never experience in Cubasis 3 now. 4. Cubasis also supports IAA which to a lot of users is a huge bonus. 5. Midi mapping is possible in Cubasis 3 and is nicely implemented. 6. Whilst multi output AUV3s can be mapped to separate busses in LP4iP, it is tedious to implement but in Cubasis 3 you press one button and it’s all done for you. 7. Audio editing I find very slow in LP4iP - like if you have a lot of audio to chop up and introduce micro fades etc, you constantly have to dive the menus - plus the gimmicky trim button slows things down further and having to menu dive for a delete button or mute function. In Cubasis you can do all of this in the normal screen and it’s much quicker. 8. I can record stems from AUM into Cubasis 3 on separate tracks which I can not do in LP4iP. 9. It’s so easy to export midi from Cubasis 3. 10. Cubasis 3 isn’t a subscription model. I own it. I’ve already spent more on my logic subscription than it cost me to buy Cubasis 3 and updates are slow. Disappointingly slow. All of this said, I think that LP4iP has many advantages over Cubasis 3 but I think in the excitement of the new DAW and its deeper menu diving features, many iOS users have cast Cubasis 3 aside, and it does do a number of things better than logic.

Often at higher tempos, looping the midi tracks it will not sound the first note and sometimes notes get stuck on or randomly a note gets dropped but that could be my BS16i plugin playing up! Also there seems to be some kind of limiter on the output that can’t be turned off, did I get a setting wrong or do I just need a proper audio interface? A setting for staggering the notes and random velocity to make piano roll midi sound more natural would be great 👍
@JamieMallender
@JamieMallender 8 ай бұрын
The missed note is something that happens with certain AUV3’s but not others so is not a Cubasis problem, it’s about that particular Audio Unit. The limiting kind of sound you are experiencing is purely because you’re not using an interface - it’s an iOS thing, not a Cubasis thing. I used to spend a lot of time trying to tweak my midi to make it sound more human - I’ve done this in many DAWs over the years. Humanisation isn’t a feature DAWs tend to have strangely. It can be done in Cubase but it isn’t obvious. But I found ultimately that the quickest way is just to play it in - capture the human performance and then if it isn’t accurate enough, drag it into time but not perfectly :) ✌️

I still prefer Cubasis over Logic Pro on the iPad. I like toying around with virtual instruments such as the Micrologue, and Cubasis caters to that need. I wish Cubasis had better multi-touch gestures tho. I feel like the piano roll is really clunky as the "Select" mode seems to turn on by itself and I'm never sure whether I'm moving a note or adjusting its length.
@JamieMallender

I feel quite at home with the Cubasis piano roll now but I do still make slip ups. Occasionally shooting 3000 bars to the left 😂 I think you’re right - more gesture development would be nice. But yes, I love the interface. To me it’s just what a DAW should be. ✌️✌️

It would be a bit of a monumental task though I would imagine, fitting all of that functionality on an iPad screen. I need 2 pc monitors for it as it is. Plus, the iOS community is not used to paying much for software. And it’s a fairly small user base and only the more powerful iPads would be able to take it…. I dunno…. I suppose it would all have to be redesigned for smaller screens. I would love it though if purchasing it on desktop meant you could use it on iPad for no extra charge - that’s what I would like to see across all software
