Breakdown of Yiheng Wang's 0.78 2x2 world record... and why there's so much controversy over it
Just to clarify a few things, the display lags behind and is NOT used in the slow motion analysis, I only counted frames to find the timer start.
Also, 2x2 probably not getting removed lol

this already happened with Vako Marchilashvili .44 2x2 single, this solution was quite hard to execute and he got it in a almost world record time, for example, this same exact scramble was generated at a competition last year, (solution being U R U R' U) and the fastest time on it was a .55, next being a .66 DNF, Not to say that this isint possible (it definetly is) but there is a high chance that he just told everyone to not upload the solve because he had a sketchy start/stop etc... not to mention this also happened with yihengs old .93 world record average original 5th solve (1.37). that video has STILL not released to the public yet. and there is no way nobody just happened to not record the solve, something clearly happened at the competition, and the people who have the video arent giving it up.

Other 2x2 solvers also have these kinds of timer starts, it’s very hard to prevent and if they only +2 yihengs average it would be simply unfair, they should either look through all videos of fast 2x2 times and +2 the ones with bad timer starts, or not +2 it.

@noahswor
@noahswor Ай бұрын
There's an additional precedent with sliding timer starts specifically; Ellery Dillon did the same thing in 2022 on a 0.53 single and 1.5 official average. If you frame counted the solves, they were all around 0.2 slower, and it was clear from looking at the video that he was using sliding starts. When I emailed WRC about this, they reached the same conclusion; if it can't be caught in real time, it would stand. This problem has always existed, and this WR is finally making everyone aware of it.
@brothdisiwsnsotwwokrs
@brothdisiwsnsotwwokrs Ай бұрын
the only thing is that a 1.5 average is not near the WR, and the .53 time he got on that 4 mover (his pr single) is quite beatable without using the sliding technique, (0.3x DS is quite easy to get without sliding). the obvious problem here is the fact that the first solve and others in yihengs .78 average are almost humanly impossible with correct starts and stops. top 2x2ers only able to achieve around mid .8 on solve #1 with near perfect execution, but legit stops and starts.

How about WIDENING the buttons on the timer. Yes I know this will restart the world records again but if that can eliminate questionable stop timer issues with hand contact with the cube while pressing the timer at the same time then that's one suggestion that might solve that. Plus having the timer so wide that a new "sweeping" technique would be implemented to start the timer while having to reach for the cube and make a clear distinction that you haven't touched the cube at the same time as the timer should help clear up this issue. But that's just my perspective.

So for the timer start problem, you kind of need to go back a couple of frames to see the actual timer start, since the thing is that the display of the timer has an around .2 lag, so when HIS timer starts, the display only starts after .2 seconds. And the only reason this is suspicious is because of the perspective the spectators are videoing, which does not allow for a good view of the hands on the timer. This issue is because that, frankly speaking, the wca people just don't want chinese cubers dominating stuff like 2x2. If timer starts and stops will be framecounted and scrutinized, just use framecounting for timing. even though his timer starts are not AS good, they are still allowed by the wca. If the wca DQs this world record, imagine the uproar it will cause... Edit: now chinese cubers will just use 144p vids for evidence that they got the record... so sad...

its very clear that most people in these comments care more about yiheng getting a record than the actual integrity of that record. implement 4pad at this point because more and more people are gonna start using these illegal stops and starts in sprint events, and tbh the wca shouldnt be about who can start/stop the timer the fastest, and at least 4pad standardizes timer starts to some extent

*Wooooooo! I've always maintained that Wang's one of the biggest cheaters in cubing history. It's sad because he's really good. If you look at the very beginning of the video, set the video on the slowest setting, and watch as his hands are sliding, keeping the clock from starting just yet. Look at the main clock and it hasn't even started until after he has already picked up the cube!!??* *I read body language, and I'm telling you, he's the biggest cheater in Rubik's cubing history. Wang's always, always looking for a way to cut corners. His Parents or teams have probably taught him from birth how to cheat.*

The timer starts are literally fine. Going frame-by-frame and saying it "should" be this or that when going backwards is not the way to determine anything here

1) aw man I thought the starts were metaphorically fine /j 2) using frame-by-frame analysis on an event under one second seems perfectly logical 3) if there are no standards for the timer starts then I might as well solve the whole cube with my hands still on the timer; of course we will be saying it "should" be this or that 4) if you want to learn something visually specific about the solves, then the best way to do that is to view them as it is done in the video not trying to be rude, but there certainly are some problems with what you're trying to say

As a Zayn fan and fellow northeastern 2x2 solver, I hope this is disqualified (and I don't to trash talk yiheng or anything), but I highly doubt it's gonna happen, given the fact that he's been using these starts and stops for soooo long now and no one cared until it caused controversy. And two more random thoughts: 1. the person who first brought up the discussion was Ibrahim Khanani, who I believe is Zayn and Hassan's brother. This makes it slightly biased, and again, I am "for Zayn" 2. 2x2 is not over. I refuse to accept that. People can keep trying to beat their own times, and eventually this record will be beaten. (For my fellow 2x2 mains, the removal message, is, simply put, a JOKE)

They should just use smart cubes, start and stop when the first move starts and ends when the cube is solved. This milliseconds difference between your hand slapping the "cup stack timer" is just silly. It is no longer about how fast you solve the cube, it's how good are you at slapping the timer.
@j1nxedcubing

While the timer thing is true, using smart cubes would be way to difficult, as different timing softwares may be different than others, and not many company’s make smart cubes
