The origins manga version need to be completely animated. So far there are 6 OVA covering Char and Sayla’s Arc. The rest would be Amuro’s story from where the original 1979 series started.

Had friends come to see the movie with me: Roommate who I've had watch most of UC, another who has watched Hathaways Flash, then one who never watched anything. Doan's Island was a good movie for all of us and got to then recommend some for the two to watch more UC stuff!

Another example I can think of that could justify making more, reimagining’s, of the original series is the Starblazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199-2202 series where they took the old story, added some new characters and story, and updated the animation, but the over all story remains much as it did in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

If you ask me, I think that there should be a remake of the original, but instead following the events of the manga, since the timeline is different. That, and I'd like to see who Sunrise would cast for every character if they were to replace them. They already got Toshihiko Seki to replace Shuichi Ikeda in some cases, and I think that he does a good job. Not sure what they'd do about the rest, though.

Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin manga is a complete reimagining of the original anime. Only the prequel parts for Char were adapted into Anime. Technically the movie version of Cucuruz Doan's Island is the Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin: Cucuruz Doan's Island. It is the same alternative timeline as The Origin not the original UC timeline.

Even though I've never seen the original version of this movie I still went and watched it in the theater and I was not disappointed.

I would mind a new adaption of the Ramba Ral Arc, although Gundam 79 covered the material pretty perfectly already. And the Origin OVA already established Ramba's situation with Zeon and relationship with Hamon. Watching the Blue Giant fight was my favorite arc of the series. The Gouf gets all the best pilots and fights.

I showed this to my mom and her SO, and they both enjoyed it. It was a very lighthearted and wholesome movie.

There would be a lot of people new to gundam that would not have a taste for the original unless the animations have been updated. So I would be okay with that too because its a good way to get people into it if they want to start off with the original story.

I think a remake, with this new style would be great, keeping the same story but updating and adding some details to make the story richer for new fans to see, we already like gundam but many people have asked me where to start, a remake of the original would be a great starting point

Speaking of new series changing things that reminds me of something I heard in regard to 08 MS Group and how it actually retconned the EF to have mass production model Gundams. Which struck me as odd when I was watching the 08 MS series but I didn't realize it was a retcon and tbh it seems like an odd change to make

6:00 Stardust Memory [UC0083] takes place before Zeta [UC0087]... I don't see how you can call it filler when it's telling an original story while acting as a sort of prequel to Zeta kind of like the Gundam The Origin OVAs. From that perspective The Origin OVA 1-5 [Char's backstory] should also be considered filler.

I loved the movie. I watched a blu ray rip some months back and unfortunately caught covid right before the theatrical release stateside, perhaps i might be able to catch a showing this weekend... The comedy aspect was one thing i didnt expect but it worked. Sleggar's return was welcomed as well as that beautiful Sleggar's GM kit ALSO by the end of the movie i realized that this was supposed to be Toru Furuya's last performance as Amuro and was genuinely impressed at how youthful he sounded. Not once did i think about the age of the voice actor because i wasnt 100% sure it was him til that fact popped back into my head

I want a CCA remake, dont change anything except the animation so i can see Nu and the ReGZ fights in glorious animation

I actually kinda agree with this. I’m not opposed to a full on remake as I think the original is a fantastic anime, but has some flaws that can be improved and even mix up some character dynamics to make it more interesting. It can bring 0079 to a new generation, and I kinda like when remakes do that. However, this can be great in order to expand on stuff, but not have a replacement for the original series, and it can be really cool to see a modern reimagining of iconic storylines in modern era, while also incentivizing people to watch the original show.

I know people are spilt on remakes but in my opinion if any series would benefit from a remake it would the early U.C specifically the original,Zeta and ZZ they started in 1979 and ended in 1987. All I'm really asking is a modern retelling of those series with some streamlining as it would be a great way to introduce a new generation to the universal century.

Pause at 0:45. That distorted look of Gundam RX-78-2 is why I want a remake of the original series. I'd really like to see him rendered properly as show in 1:13 instead. This isn't about there's "nothing new" to the original story to remake. Of course, we don't want to mess that up. But this is to better immerse myself to the real robot that Gundam is. I find the current rendering style, so much better and Grampa Gundam DESERVES more of it. The story telling can be made more grim. Presence of blood, gore, dark lights, shadows, more detailed grime and debris, eyes of characters that show more fear (example for that is Thunderbolt). My 2 cents.

I couldn't agree more. So far Gundam has been in good hands, and a remake of 0079 should NEVER HAPPEN. Tell other stories, can be from other perspectives.. there's plenty going on that could pop in and out of the OYW that we've seen where certain scenes can be remade without remaking the entire thing. Plus, 0079 is a masterpiece why mess with it? It set the gold standard for every single Gundam series that has been made. Good luck topping that, unless its an exact copy just updated animation. I don't see the upside.

I watched it here in Korea on the opening day. Although I agree with your overall sentiment, I walked away thinking why was this necessary to make into a feature? The whole thing felt like overblown Netflix episode rather than something worth watching on a big screen.

I agree with you that I don't like reboots that add nothing to the story, but in my mind, a lot of the UC timeline has merits in getting reboots. We saw with Gundam the Origin how much the manga adaptations added to the story, and personally I think Char Deleted Affair, and the following Define, which rewrites the events of Zeta, are worth getting their own adaptation as well, seeing how much they add to Char and the other characters. Deleted Affair particularly changed a lot of things on how i view Char Counterattack.

Great video man but I do have to disagree with you. While I understand your fears with remakes, I think it is different case with Gundam. The Gundam franchise is so large that most people who try to get in to it give up. Having a series everyone can point to point to as the definitive starting place would be huge for getting more people into Gundam. Right now, if you were to go on a forum and ask where to start with Gundam you would get way to many response. You would get a purist telling you watch the original show and another telling you the 3 remake movies are fine. The zommer says IBO and the millennial says Wing. The dragonball fan says G fighter, the Code Geass fan says 00 and the Ghibli fan says Turn A. You might also hear War in a pocket or Thunderbolt for some reason. I would say The Origin because it's U.C, it's a prequel to 1979, it's short, and it's probably the best anime thats come out in the last decade with the exception being Vinland Saga maybe? The problem with Origin is that it works best when you've already seen the original show. I showed it to my friends and they really liked it but I had to explain to explain a lot. While it's ideal to start with the original show, it's very difficult to convince newcomers to watch something that's old and long. While the complication movies help a little, the dated visuals aren't helping at all. approach

You using the reanimated game cutscenes from the original series made me think that a movie version of the trilogy using them would be cool, maybe like what zeta ANT did. Anyway, i agreed, i would rather prefer they make new series that tackle new themes and stories (So far GWicth is fucking great) Tho, maybe if they where to reanimating some episodes, or maybe the whole series but keeping the original voice work could work for an interesting idea (?)

The only changes they have made was not having Ryu in this but switching him with Lt. Slugger instead.... I thought the animation was pristine just like on MSG: Origins and the movie was magnificent......Don't count your blessings too soon because there will be a remake in the future to keep it subpar with the new animation like MSG: Origin, Cucuruz Doan's Island and Hathaway.

I would love to see a new series set in the one yar war but focused on a front-line unit of normal humans with no space magic BS Mary Sue characters, in the same vein as 8th MS Team but set in space or on the moon. Get gritty with it, maybe follow a mercenary unit ala Area 88 or something. The OYW and UC timeline is definitely the richest and most interesting canvass on which to paint a new story.

Instead of a full on remake, Sunrise should do like an alternate timeline whereas it's a mix of the Origin and the old novel version of Mobile Suit Gundam (the one where Amuro and Sayla has a relationship, and has a more tragic ending). Basically have the art style, and mobile suits of the Origin while having a mix of the story telling with the old novel. Idk what do you guys think?

The Origin anime and Cucuruz Doan's Island are companions to the manga, only. There are too many anachronisms, incongruencies, and blatant contradiction to UC lore for them to fit in with either 1979 anime or film trilogy in any reasonable sense.

Interesting opinion but you have to remember that the vast majority of the fanbase is in favor of a remake of Mobile Suit Gundam (MSG). Although MSG is easily regarded as a classic, time has not been very kind to it as the 1979 animation makes it hard to watch with modern audiences. I wont sugarcoat it, many parts of the original anime had some bad animation and alot of things they animated simply didnt age that well. You cant attract new fans to the franchise if youre gonna be presenting them with something thats unpalatable in the 2020s, even many fans of Gundam are turned off by the aged animation and will just opt for the trilogy instead. Not everyone is a hardcore purist that can enjoy an anime released in 1979. An Origin remake of the MSG TV anime gives an opportunity for everyone to experience what they love about Gundam all over again. The best part is, it comes from a familiar story but with some modern paint which will attract not just the massive UC fanbase, but also bring a new generation of fans to the franchise. Not only does it make sense from the standpoint of the fans (it is what the community wants), but it also makes a lot of business sense for Bandai to milk kits out of (money is more important to companies than art). Although yes, I agree that the approach taken by Cucuruz Doans Island (CDI) is a very interesting and wonderful approach to remaking, its pretty much just a taste for when the actual Origin remake takes centerstage. But the truth is, ever since the prequel arc of the Origin anime finished, its pretty much an open secret that Bandai has been developing the Origin Remake anime. Evidence of this is how Sunrise released that little teaser of the Origin Gundam getting up from the trailer from MSG's first episode but also in UC Engage and CDI using the designs from Origin and not from MSG. It doesnt make too much sense to use the Origin style for one-offs unless its Thunderbolt, which is also set on an adjacent/parallel UC-timeline. Bandai is simply waiting for the perfect moment to drop this enormous cash cow, which might possibly become bigger than Unicorn was. TLDR: At this point, an Origin anime remake is inevitable and Bandai is in no rush, just waiting for the perfect time.

They really did remake the plot for this movie. They didn't do plot expansion so much as change many, many things. Example: in the movie Cucuruz ruthlessly kills former friends and foe; in MSG, Cucuruz tries to avoid murder. Just one example of subtle characterization in MSG that is butchered in the Origin continuity The Origin animations are fantastic but I'm not a fan of the timeline, it's too different from UC.

I somewhat disagree. The original gundam is over 40 years old and the anime straight up just does not hold up. I want to get people in to the uc timeline from the start. I recommend them origin first, then... the original movies? bandai needs to do a full 50 episode reboot origins style and not movies of smaller events like doan's because the universal century is not a beginner friendly timeline mainly because of how old the anime is. I watched doan's island with my friend who is a newbie. I enjoyed it but he didn't because the movie doesn't do enough to give context to people who never watched the 1979 anime or movie trilogy. I do not want to gatekeep people out of the u.c. timeline. so in conclusion: animate more gundam origin bandai!

And to consider origin as a prequel to the show is kinda wrong because of all the differences, origin strictly follows the origin timeline, and you'd have to use your own headcanon to connect origin and the original 0079 together, and not gonna lie, I've already do that, but instead of trying origin backwards into the old stuff, I tie it into new stuff that's also been modified to fit, like Char's Deleted Affair, Zeta Define and Stardust Memory Rebellion, and CCA Beltorchica's Children Modifications like art styles and plot stuff, some personal like my preferred replacement of Beltorchica's Children with Sayla, and some actual plot issues like M'Quve dying at Odessa in Origin and him dying right after A-Baoa Qu in Char's Deleted Affair which my headcanon just says M'Quve has a Twin, and besides- this version of M'Quve was kinda off character anyways

I disagree, where as I don't mind these OVAs or films to expand on cut original content or just new stuff for original characters a good reboot if done right can reignite the spark or introduce new fans to the series. I've had so many possible Gundam fans quit because the 1979 animation is just god awful. I hate that Sunrise outsourced to 3rd party animators who went and gave us things like Fat Gouf, or disproportionate Gundam on more then one frame. With as popular as Gundam us now and the success of certain series like Unicorn or The Origin OVAs it's absolutely possible to reboot the 1979 animation. It doesn't have to be a complete soulless reboot it can do so much more. I mean if it also doesn't have anything new so what? I think thats just your personal opinion when you say a reboot that has nothing new is bland. If something is old and outdated theres nothing wrong with giving it a shiny new coat of paint. MSG needs a remake full stop as I don't care what anyone says. The original MSG series would benefit from some filler being removed, improved pacing, characterization improvements, and animation on the same level as the Origin OVA. I generally don't understand why some of the fanbase is against it because younger anime fans simply won't watch it because of the animation looks worse than some 60s era hanna barbera cartoons despite MSG being made in 1978/1979. Remember we are coming up on the 50th anniversary of the gundam franchise in 2029 so a remake with Origins animation would be Sunrise basically going balls deep to celebrate. It would also allow them to add in some OYW mobile suit designs that were used in later franchises and OVAs.

The original Gundam is old as shit and has extremely uneven animation quality. It should get a modern remake. If you don’t want to see it then don’t watch it. But I know there’d be a lot of old fans who’d love to experience the show again and new Gundam fans who have not seen the original show because the poor animation is too high a barrier for entry.

I wouldn't mind an animation of the origin manga, but only if they actually animate it. The CGI in this movie was so off putting i could not watch the mobile suit engagements. When the main attraction of Gundam is unwatchable, then you know you fked up.

This side story I found to be extremely disappointing, it just changed characters and their agency a lot, wasted the Southern Cross who also just felt out of place in an MSG79 main side story and is nowhere near to the quality of the qctual ORIGIN manga. Its sad because the ORIGIN retelling of 79 is 10/10 but the prequel and side stories are vastly weaker offerings but get animated.

in my opinion, simply reanimate the original trilogy. then maybe do what they did with Greco and make 5 parts for zeta. OH and tweak it a bit so that zz is NO LONGER CANON

This movie clearly doesn't take place in standard UC, the events are clearly going on differently than in the original series (they got Sleggar on board, just to name one). This movie is meant to follow Yasuhiko's vision of Gundam, not to complement the original works by Tomino, just like the Origin ova, thar already showed major inconsistencies with the original story. I also found this movie to be just boring, the tone in really bland, the characters are uninteresting and the fightings are not entertaining. I wouldn't recommend this movie unless you're a completionist when it comes to Gundam
