The Wild West Extravaganza

2 жыл бұрын

Said to have killed hundreds of people, Cullen Baker was one of the deadliest men of the Old West. But who was he really? A guerilla warfighter and proud unreconstructed rebel who continued to defy federal authority long after the Civil War was officially over? A true hero of the cause or just a homicidal maniac? And did Cullen Baker really invent the quick draw? #wildwest #civilwar #history

Baker was going to be arrested and tried for the bullwhip beating to a young man named Stallcup who he almost killed. Wesley Bailey was a witness to the beating and willing to testify. Baker went out to his ranch and shot his legs with a shotgun, injuries which killed Bailey a couple days later. Baker than ran away to Arkansas and hid at his uncle's house for a couple of years. And I think both of Baker's wives were named Martha. The Wartham murder was around 1856. His daughter was Louise was born in 1857 and his first wife died in 1860 when she was about 23. Interesting episode. I think that a lot of these "super" murderers had a lot more crimes attributed to them than they actually committed so there legends grew. Either way, Baker was apparently a very bad man.

Enjoyed the Cullen Baker episode, even though I have studied him quite a bit. My GGGrandfather was Thomas Orr, the lowly schoolteacher who was one of the subjects of Cullen's hatred. The killing of Cullen Baker must have brought Thomas some fame, as he became the Surveyor of Miller County, Arkansas and laid out the town of Texarkana, served in the Arkansas Legislature and was Sheriff and County Judge in Texarkana. He owned the Opera House and had a successful Law Practice. After all he went thru to marry Belle Foster, they were later divorced and he was married twice more. He and Belle are both buried (separately) in State Line Cemetery in Texarkana.

And my uncle was a pretty vagabond old hippie. So he didn't own much. But those books were his prized possessions. I know my mom's family was southern. Kinda Mahe me have to wonder.... 19:00 One of my Baker x? Great grandfathers had a record attached to his name that said him home was lost a few years before he died due to unpaid property taxes.🤔 Now I'm gonna have to go back through and hunt for that document.

As always, your presentation is superb. Your narration really pulls the listener in. And you clearly differentiate between historic FACT, and conjecture, and let the listener know! Very well done. "Fast Draw" as depicted in Hollywood westerns is total fiction. Most of us, familiar with history, know quite well that two men practically never met in the middle of the street at noon to see who was the fastest draw. However, on the Western Frontier, two "Pistoleers" would often stalk each other, sometimes for days, weeks, months, etc, when only death would settle their differences, no matter how trivial the offense. As soon as the 1851 Colt Navy had become THE desired handgun on the Western Frontier, men were learning how to get the Navy into action as smoothly and rapidly as practical, for practical self-defense. No different than today's self-defense drills getting the Glock 19 or S&W J-frame revolver into action smoothly and quickly from concealed carry against a threat. In the VIGILANTES OF MONTANA (1866, author Thomas Dimsdale), "Outlaw-masquerading-as-sheriff" Henry Plummer was described as being able to draw and fire the five shots of his revolver in about 2 or 3 seconds. Plummer's revolver was the small five-shot .36 caliber 1862 Colt Police revolver, the same size as Colt's little 5-shot .31 Pocket revolvers, but with slightly enlarged cylinder to enable the small "Police" revolver to handle the same round ball or conical bullet of the Navy revolvers. The small 5-shot .36 Police revolver, could be carried concealed, and the lighter weight allowed a faster "draw" than the larger 6-shot, .36 Navy revolvers. While the easier hiding, and lighter weight of the small .36 Police would be a reason to choose it over the larger Navy size, in actuality the reason that Plummer likely acquired a 5-shot Police .36 instead of the larger 6-shot Navy .36, was because the Civil War was in full swing, making military sized revolvers in .36 or .44 caliber very difficult to acquire, while the smaller 5-shot .31 Pocket and .36 Police revolvers would be readily available. HISTORY NOTE: As the Idaho / Montana Vigilantes gradually rounded up and shot or hung the robbers and killers around the Alder Gulch area in then-Idaho Territory (became Montana Territory in May, 1864) gold fields, it was revealed that elected Sheriff Henry Plummer was associated with the gang, and using his position to forward information to the gang concerning stage and freight shipment of gold. The Vigilantes caught up to Plummer and on January 10, 1864, Plummer and two deputies were hung from the corral post entrance gate near Bannack, near the Ader Gulch gold strikes. Just another boring day in the Wild West I suppose.

Ain't no one gonna git tired of hearin you talk, You do great work and it is very enjoyable. Love the history, it should be said the way you say it in schools. Minus the cussing of course, we can keep that for us grown folk. Seriously though I wish for nothing but great fortunes for you, it is well earned.

If he had pistols and those soldiers just had their issued single shot stuffers it wouldn’t be much of a gun fight ! Those long rifles arent gettin whipped into action very quick. So basically he shot unarmed men the way I see it. Long rifles are for mass formation fights.
