Maybe Sylvanas didn't want religion competing with her cult of personality? Even in TBC (when I started playing) the Forsaken have a cult of personality if their "dark lady watch over you" line is anything to go by.

My first character was an Undead Warlock the first year WoW came out, along with a Human Paladin and Human Mage. What I like best about the original story of the Forsaken was its writing. The Forsaken knew they were Undead and understood their previous life was over. They were forlorn, wary, dedicated and very independent, they saw the Horde as a crutch rather than their faction. Some Forsaken disliked the Horde as much as the Alliance, or didn't care whatsoever and only sought to survive. And beyond that, they knew the Scourge of Lordaeron, the same faction which murdered them in life, was not too far to the East, in the Plaguelands, there was a feeling of ominous dread even in the low level zones of danger and horror. The music built the environment, accompanied by a dark green sky and blighted, haunted, forests. Such an environment in the early 2000s made a Warcraft fan's creativity run wild. But, as time progressed, I lost my interest in the faction as it seemed to have lost its rustic tenacity and underlying mysteriousness, it became a moustache twirling faction. In the original game, most Forsaken were evil, but it was usually out of pragmaticism coupled with bitterness, it was not arbitrary; they usually were testing alchemical substances on the living or sought to maintain their state in undeath, not randomly attacking people. And, interestingly enough, Sylvanas was not really that much of a centerpiece, she pretty much stayed in the Undercity, trying to figure out how to handle leading a nation of Undead, maintain her sanity and deal with the Dreadlord governing with her. So, the personalities of the early Forskaken were far more varied and the Cult of Shadow clerics, along with alchemists and a lich, generally got more attention, creating many storylines. I don't play WoW anymore, but I will always remember my first character inspired by Kel'Thuzad in WC3 and TFT.

This is when I LOVED the Forsaken till they wanted to turn our leader into Super Evil Bad Guy of the Expansion. Before they decide to make her evil Sylvanas hits home the Forsaken when you do the old Silverpine quest line and you are riding with here and she basically tells you how the Forsaken ARE the people of Lordaeron, and funny enough, SHE IS RIGHT! Like from Classic up to that point in the game, if you play Forsaken, you come to realize that the Forsaken are not just some Squatters that just took over the place, they are the very people killed by their own Prince, turned to undead and force to kill their own people, only to FINALLY be free and hated by their own countrymen and families. Playing both sides shows you that a LOT of the families the Forsaken have are still alive on the human side. It’s why I always find it funny when you get quest for the Alliance to kick out/kill some Forsaken in some manor or building because 99% of the time that Forsaken OWNS that place and has owned it in both living and death. PFFT, “Take back Lordaeron from the Forsaken!”, you mean kick you the very people ya left high and dry, then tried to kill them when they finally got free, and you are shocked and amazed they hate you all??? Sorry, but the way I see it The Forsaken taking out Gilneas is more of a, “that’s what you get for turning your back on the rest of us when we needed you behind your wall!” Then again so much stuff and be recon over the bloody years that it drives me nuts! You want some real villains of WoW, go look at the bloody Nightelves and Highborn! They are the cause of SO MUCH stuff and get off so scot free it’s a pure crime!

The whole "b-b-but we are the original inhabitants of Lordaeron" excuse doesn't hold water considering as an UD player you purge all the non-UD former citizens of Lordaeron in the Eastern Kingdoms, as well as attacking the humans of the other Human kingdoms. They also killed BASED Garithos, the former Grand Marshall of the Lordaeron army. Never mind the fact that even in vanilla WoW the Forsaken see "life" as a disease and are working on a plague to "rescue" everyone from their ultimate death. There is a reason they start off with neutral with the rest of the horde. The Forsaken are a dangerous abomination and need to be purged from the lands of Azeroth as proven by their actions not just in classic but in later expansions. No amount of mental gymnastics can change the fact that they are in the wrong.

@@HYDRAdude The forsaken had to push them out because they would attack them anyways. The world sees the forsaken as an abomination, but if they were in their shoes, they would see why they do what they do. Read the pre-bfa book "before the storm" by Christie Golden. It tells the story of Calia Menethi's understanding of the forsaken people, and even becoming undead in the process. Not forsaken undead though.

I still want to know where Xal'atath came from. Like, why did the orcs have it in the First War? Where did they get it? Was it brought from Draenor, or did they find it once they passed through the portal? If they found it on the Draenor side of the portal, is it related to an Old God from their world? I know there's an Old God being summoned over in Outland in our timeline, so maybe that's viable. But if it isn't, and the dagger was found on Azeroth's side of the portal, then where was it found, and how? Did they use magic to divine out the presence of dark artifacts that the demon blood-crazed orcs could wield against humanity, or did Xal'atath reach out to the orcs somehow? It had to be from the southern Eastern Kingdoms if so, as the orcs did not move north past Elwynn until the First War's conclusion, and the weapon was allegedly in use throughout the war. So, if Xal'atath is Azerothi in nature, it had been in the Swamp of Sorrows, Stranglethorn Vale, Darkshire (at the time known as Grand Hamlet), Deadwind Pass, Westfall, Redridge, or the area in the southeast that we now refer to as The Blasted Lands.

@FishSkeleton-
@FishSkeleton- 4 жыл бұрын
@@Nighttimeqt1 But why would an object related to the Old Gods (or at least related to imprisoning them) come from the Shadowlands? As far as I can understand, since the Shadowlands exist on another plane of reality, and since the Old Gods are obsessed with taking over the physical universe, the Shadowlands probably don't have much, if anything to do with Old Gods. Still, Ardenweald is connected to the Emerald Dream, and that was able to be corrupted by Old God influence, so maybe Shadowlands denizens are more familiar with Old God stuff than I would think, but I suspect they don't have any Old Gods living in that astral realm. If anything, Shadowlands beings probably only care about the anima droughts Old Gods would cause if they extinguished life as we know it, since no new souls would be coming to the Shadowlands, but I don't think they would have special objects like Xal'atath for dealing with void beings. The Legion only obtained Frostmourne, the Helm of Domination, and the Plate of the Damned because they were made by the Runesmith character we'll meet in the Shadowlands who can infuse objects with the death energy that permeates zones like Maldraxxus over in the Shadowlands, but I doubt that Runesmith is a master of void magic as well, since that's considered different in Warcraft from Decay, which is the 'element' that fuels the Shadowlands, not the void magic that the Old Gods are associated with.

Light, nature, chaos, war, money, power, technologies, religions, cults, etc. And Forsaken, on the other hand, are forsaken by sense. Searching for the meaning to somehow make their miserable life worth living. But in the end of the day, what are we if not slaves to this torment? (Hello there Arthur!)

heres what i want to know, can the forsakes actually wield the light in lore? like obviously in game you can, but can they lore wise? i have a hard time viewing undead allonsus fowl using shadow. ive heard arguments that they can't because the light burns them but i always thought that was the cool part about it. forsaken priests always talk about will power, their racial is about willpower. i like the idea that the light totally does burn them but being a forsaken priest means your will power is strong af so you endure it to still tap in to that power, makes it to where even holy forsaken priests still have that angsty edginess that shadow has

The Forsaken wielding the Light, to say the least, is an... interesting subject, given how the Light will─as you said─burn the undead wielder. Essentially, when wielding the Light, it just hurts them like hell to do. But, in regards to your question: yes, the Forsaken can wield the Light. The caveats being, as stated previously, it's immensely painful and requires a large amount of willpower (they'd have to really, really want to wield it). Something to note is also, although the Light excommunicates undead (as this channel puts it), the only prerequisite to actually wielding the Light is that... well, you need to believe you're wielding it for the right reasons. Arthas, for example, lost his connection before undeath because he was having doubts in it. Meanwhile, the Scarlet Crusade's (a group established as a villainous one) members have been seen wielding the Light because they believe they're doing good. All in all, yes, the Forsaken can wield the Light, although it's difficult, painful, and often rare. Other undead have also been noted as wielding the Light, such as Sir Zeliek (one of the Four Horseman of Naxxramas); he did it out of sheer willpower, like many Forsaken individuals would.
@Shovelchicken
@Shovelchicken 4 жыл бұрын
JamesZych they can use the light, alonsus faol is a forsaken who uses the light for example (and previous leader of the church of the light before becoming forsaken) Wielding it does cause them extreme pain however (which is likely a factor why the cult of forgotten shadows became popular among them) Priests simply use the light and it causes them immense pain (not actual harm from using it, just pain), but paladins are actually infused with light so it’s unclear how that would effect them. I can only think of one paladin undead, one of the four horseman from naxx, I don’t believe there’s enough story to him to tell us definitively if forsaken could theoretically be paladins, or if he’s just an exception.

I was actually wondering why the Forsaken can be priests and not paladins.I believe that to be much more appropriate than the cows as paladins.After all they were/are humans (those of the former kingdom of Londareon) and apart from this class the paladin they were always able to be what a human from Stormwind could be which further empowers my statement/question!After Cataclysm though they added Gilneans and now the tall fatasses Kul tirans being much different than dipicted on original warcraft 3 and the human race is a mess much like the 4 races of elves.

This is a very interesting part of wow lore, I think it draws a lot of inspiration from the real life Protestant Reformation. You have an established religion, the Church of the Holy Light (catholicism) challenged by a similar but different faith of former members. The Cult of Forgotten Shadow is reminsecent of protestantism by: 1) It's decentralized nature, no central authority which allows for the springing of many subgroups with different views 2) It's focus on the individual rather than a greater whole. For example protestants gave a great emphasis on followers reading the Bible themselves to draw their own conclusions, which horrified the catholic clergy. You also have the idea of predetermination in calvinist protestantism, the idea that God already chose certain individuals who will be the only ones to have access to salvation, and of course the links between protestantism and the rise of individualisticly driven capitalism as demonstrated by Max Weber (ia the idea that the pursuit of individual success, like getting richer, is a sign of God's favor).

5:30 Huh, honestly sounds like a twisted, but interesting take on zen Buddhist philosophy mixed with humanism with whole ultimate goal of achieving a higher form of spiritual existence by becoming reincarnated as a being of pure shadow of immense self mastery. Really interesting stuff that I wish Blizzard would have explored more or atleast back when I still had faith in them. Also I like how the philosophy/pseudo religion was decentralized and having many different sects with many different explorations of the concept of the self. Also I do like the idea of Forgetten shadow practitioners regarding the entities of the Shadow with respect but don't really worship them but understand that they can be useful in the pursuit of one's own path towards shadow awakening and achieving a dark counterpart to the concept of nirvana. The shadow entities could be seen as assortments of bodhisattvas, entities often regarded highly by buddhism in general but not necessarily worshiped, more like examples of what one can do to aid them on their own path through life or obtaining ultimate freedom from this mortal coil i.e. for many FS sects becoming shadow entities like these never mortal creatures.

Unfortunately, anything that isn't Christian is satanic. The universe can't create itself, meaning God exists, and this God is the God of Moses, the God of the Jews, and the God of the Bible. The reason we know this is because God himself came to the earth to once and for all reveal himself to us in Jesus Christ
@navilluscire2567
@navilluscire2567 2 жыл бұрын
@@AR15andGOD Kinda agree, it's actually pretty hard for western writers and worldbuilders to get OUT of those imagination templates informed heavily (usually unintentionally) by collective Christian theology and abrahamic traditions in general. That said honestly alot of them don't pull nearly enough from some of the more obscure and outright heretical (as in no larger established sects of christianity today would accept) Christian denominations and their traditions or theological ideas i.e. the Cathars or Christian sects that rejected the idea trinity, most of these were formed when christianity as a whole was still a new and decentralized movement which meant A LOT of exploration of different views on jesus, christ, their nature and what did it mean to follow him. *There was no such thing as cannon back then and was basically a spiritual free for all* were each group no matter how small or how out there was to be seen as any less legitimate than the other. I mean well atleast to any outside observers that is, ofcourse there was STILL plenty of sectarian violence between many of these groups on their disagreements regarding doctrine, what old traditions to keep, what to discard, and what was christ's nature i.e. was he purely flesh, entirely spirit? neither? both? Something else entirely? These were in the early days of Christianity NOT as *'settled'* questions as they might be considered now, atleast among today's largest and most powerful sects of the faith. Actually that's partly why I like the idea of the cult(s) of the forgotten shadow as a concept, reminiscent of those early days of Christianity, were their wasn't any BIG, overarching authorities who would dictate what is or isn't cannon and the undead shadow priests being those early Christians from various sects who are basically making up their own traditions and brewing their own theologies based on how they viewed their relationship with the Shadow and even the Void and how they are to spread their message or what ideological stances they subscribe to.

Would be cool if we got some side qiests that involved the various player class factions from Legion. In DF after all you would think the druids shammans paladinis would be interested in a Deathwing like set of enemies. Not to mention, the Mole town down under odd to be full of shammans. The black prince's retainers should be infiltrated by rogue from Ravengold. Etc.

Thank you for mentioning the darker aspects of the Forsaken in Vanilla. It needs to be talked about a lot more. A lot of people seem to have missed or forgotten all the bad things the Forsaken have done throughout the franchise, thinking Sylvanas' villainy came out of nowhere and that she and the Forsaken as a whole were just misunderstood innocents before BfA.

i can remember an old offical roleplaying guide (not sure about the english word) and it stated that the forsaken through their curse feel an urge to harm all living beings. so they seem only parttime emo. also since they gave dks later a similar but more painful description too one can assume it probably part of the undead curse used by the scourge.

I think what I find interesting about the forsaken is that, while I wouldn't call them monsters for being undead, I would say they are monsters for their actions and depravity, pretty much being no different in my view from many other horrible villains we fight. They bath in negativity and self pity, then lash out, especially those that have found meaning that they themselves do not have. Personally I would like to see some character growth from the society as a whole, since low key, both horde and alliance should want to destroy the forsaken if before they become too much of a force to stop, since we have seen them lash out at both sides before, albeit through factions that split off.
