They're leeches. They're pretty easy to tell apart if you know what to look for, planaria usually have triangular heads and have visible eye spots, and move with a gliding motion. The things that come in these move with a contracting or looping motion, don't have eye spots, and are segmented.

This was very interesting. I live in the UK and we do not routinely have black worms, but I managed to get a few from a friend. I keep them in my snail breeding tank, on a gravel substrate. Twice a week I stir the substrate up and siphon off the “detritus” through a fine sieve. I recently noticed I have quite a large number of them. Enough to feed my Dwarf Puffers twice a week. Didn’t know how to catch them though! Lol. 🐡🐡🐡

I use the sponge filter for mechanical filtration (keeping the water clear), but if you don't care about clear water then something like a bit of free floating anacharis would likely keep the ammonia levels in check without worrying about roots making it hard to harvest them

So I have a mini sponge filter that has a water pump on it, with a piece you can attach an air line to to add air to your output. My plan is to make a huge coil of tubing, and run it into my mini freezer I keep frozen foods for my fish in. I'm going to attach one end to the aeration, and restrict the water output to force water out the aeration valve. I'm hoping that it being close to the freezer, and if I get the flow just right through the "cooling coil" contraption, it will keep the tank water much cooler! If it yields any sort of effect, I might get a big enough foam cooler to see if I can get a lower temperature. Wave maker plugged in for 30 second every 17 days? To force extreme propagation? Or too much? Maybe a medium size water pump on lowest setting half way into the substrate?

Can you explain more the battery set up you did I tried pausing the video at that point but it is not easy to see how you have the wire/ the length or what you mean by apply the current (I assume you mean press it on top of the gravel). Do you keep the wire hooked into the battery when not in use or do u add the wire just before using it for this purpose? I should have a batch of my black worms ready to extract from their gravel in about 30 days so I want to try this method. My pea puffers are extremely picky and will only eat these and brine shrimp. My dwarf frogs love these worms too so it will be cheaper than buying them bloodworms.
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 6 жыл бұрын
I just held the wires on the battery with my fingers, but a really good solution is one of these www.amazon.com/1-X-9V-Battery-Connector/dp/B001F39728 I couldn't find mine when I was doing the video, and there's no place in town that sells them, so I just fudged it. With these it's safe to just leave the clip harness on the battery all the time, as long as the wires don't touch. When harvesting, I stick the wires into the gravel about 1/2 an inch apart. Give it about 5 seconds, then move the wires to another area in the gravel. After about 30 seconds (6 areas), you'll have most of the worms out if it's a small net.
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 6 жыл бұрын
Also, if you aren't breeding nerite snails for your puffers you probably should. They can be bred in an old milk jug, but I use the same tank as my blackworms. Small puffers don't need many of them, but the very tiny snails are usually savored by my pea puffers and my baby figure 8s. They can end up with overgrown teeth that causes them to lose the ability to eat if they only ever eat soft foods like worms and brine shrimp.

I want to do this to get them out of my substrate to switch over to a different substrate setup, but I don't know if you only do this immediately before you feed them to the fish because they're going to die anyway, or if they would continue living and reproducing fine after being zapped.

@@johnferro6214 I believe the range I've seen online is 55-70 for ideal growth, but I didn't really bother to remember since 74 was workable. gravel on the bottom with a stone and duckweed on top. in an aquarium setup.
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 6 жыл бұрын
I'm still not sure exactly what you're asking? Are you talking about floating duckweed to keep the water clean longer, or shallow water duckweed growing into the gravel? If the water is shallow enough for the worms to get into the duckweed and breath from the surface directly, then like I said, it will increase growth rates but decrease replication rates, because they would eat at the duckweed, but it's soft enough to prevent them from breaking much If you're talking about duckweed floating over several inches of water then it would probably kill the worms from low oxygen. To keep the worms alive in deeper water you need large surface area and high agitation to get enough oxygen to keep them alive, and duckweed cuts surface area and reduces oxygen levels in the water.
@MistressOP
@MistressOP 6 жыл бұрын
I have a full-size fish tank that I keep duckweed growing in. it has a small bubble air stone. I notice when the air stone is in there it keeps the water fresh and moving just a little bit. At the bottom of the fish tank, there is gravel. The fish tank gravel is about two hands down from the top of the tank where the duckweed is. I wanted to put the worms in the gravel and keep growing the duckweed. Maybe add another two air stones or something? I was wondering if I could get it to work without the worms crashing. I want my worms and my duckweed to. maybe it's greedy of me.
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 6 жыл бұрын
Cold water retains more oxygen so it might work that way with a couple more air stones if there's no heater. I'm not 100% sure on the oxygen requirements of these guys. I added some to my scud tank (partial surface cover) and they all disappeared, but I don't now if it was low oxygen, heat, or just the scuds eating them It doesn't hurt much to try it, if you have to bulk buy like I do I'd recommend adding a couple tablespoons of them to your tank then keeping the rest in the fridge until you know whether they'll live that way or not. They're easily visible when there's food at the bottom of the tank, so you'll know pretty fast if they're thriving or dying

Great video, what's a good food in your opinion to gut load them? Also, is the tank heated or is it at room temp?
@MischiefandFins
@MischiefandFins 5 жыл бұрын
They don't really eat "food," they eat the rotting material and the bacteria and fungus that grows in it. I assume you're coming from feeding reptiles, where you can load up crickets or roaches with vitamin rich foods, but there's no way to stop these from being unhealthy candy, unfortunately. They do eat spirulina pellets pretty readily, so that's probably the closest you'll get to a gut load I've never heard of anyone heating them, I wouldn't as it drives oxygen levels down, but in very shallow water (where they can directly breath air) it might promote growth, since there would be a higher decay rate and more "food" as a result.

@MischiefandFins 6 жыл бұрын
White worms are an OK food source, but they require cooling to get good yields. I have to keep mine in a mini-fridge or they die (as they require 50-55 F). A mini fridge is a much larger investment than a tub of water. Grindal worms are easier to keep than white worms, but they're very small and pretty low yield, and in my opinion they're really only useful for fry that have outgrown microworms or vinegar eels, but by that time I've generally gotten them used to accepting processed foods. They're helpful in getting fast enough growth to solidify leopard patterns in angel fry, though. You don't need a tank for blackworms, as I stated in the video (around 5:50). You can use any container, a glass tank just makes it easier to get them on video (and I already have loads of 10 gallon tanks). You could just as easily keep them in an old milk jug with the top cut off with a bunch of wet rotting grass for a substrate if you don't need large numbers of them. Just pour out most of the water once a week and add fresh aged water and you're done. You don't even need to feed them that way. I'll be doing videos on whiteworms and grindals, microworms, daphnia, infusoria, red worms, and a variety of other things eventually, this was just a convenient time to do these.

I've seen people use a pre filter sponge and you stick a air stone inside of it this makes a really small sponge filter. But if I where you I would not use a tank any smaller than about 5 gallon or 2.5 gallon for snails or worms. Half a gallon I don't think is big enough for anything, you would be constantly cleaning it but Gd luck it with it emma.

@@orangeaquatics9068 I don't have duckweed, I just mentioned that someone "could" do it that way. I've seen it done by others. The important thing if you're going to try duckweed is that the water be shallow enough for the blackworms to breath directly from the surface, which is why I say 1/4 to 1/2 inch. I personally wouldn't push it past 1 inch deep, but if you experiment with it let us know how it goes!

I’ll try and remember. I plan on doing lots of duckweed so I probably will try it in the last tray before water goes to a tank to do gravel filtering before going my main storage/chilling area for my aquariums and plants. I don’t want micoworms anywhere but where I raise them. I was going to give daphnia an other shot but these look easier to raise. ....so when done in duckweed will they need food or feed off plant material fish tank waste & such?

I think it depends where you buy them and the water quality they're in. I got some from my lfs today and not gonna lie they had a smell but it was almost pleasant lol But I did buy a small portion and also didn't have it shipped so those most likely are contributing factors.

I want to do this but it might be too messy, I only have one betta might get another so you think this is worth it? It seems like a cool project too. Just looked at the prices, I dont think Ill do this 😂.

It can be pretty mess free. For smaller farming, I'd suggest just using a 1 gallon mason jar. It makes water changes super easy, since you can just pour off the old water, and the opening it still big enough to get your hand in pretty easily. I'd just get a small net and scoop the gravel out directly with it, you don't have to worry about injuring the worms since you want them to break. Just toss an air stone in and change some water every 4-5 days instead of every 7-10, so you don't have to worry about possible smells. I'd do daily water changes for the first 3-4 days though, the stuff they poop out when you get them is unbelievably gross in odor. Using baked clay gravel leads to much better water than growing them in paper or napkins (no wood pulp), has a high enough surface area to act as biological media, and the worms don't eat much anyway, so an air stone is plenty in a small container. You'd just want to find a store that sells them by the teaspoon (it's like $2 for a starter culture that way)

Angelfish Unlimited I think you just changed my mind lol, if its possible in a one gallon jar then I guess I can do it, already have the air pump and net so just need the jar, substrate and culture, thanks for the help!

Yep. Mine handle very large changes in temperature, PH, and TDS with no issues, so 70% water changes on a gallon jar shouldn't cause them any issue. Just keep an eye on any that are dead, you'll find them white and floating. Make sure you pull them out so they don't foul the water.

I assume this is in response to me saying something along the lines of "they're basically candy bars" but it's been over two years and you're a little vague. I'm not going to rewatch the video to find out exactly what you're upset about. If you ate nothing but beef jerky you would die. As a sole source of food beef jerky would be garbage. Animals need more than fat, protein, and carbohydrates, and blackworms are not a great source of other nutrients, especially since most people buy them a couple tablespoons at a time from a local fish store where they haven't actually eaten anything in days or weeks. Crickets are also high in protein while being garbage food, that's why stores sell gut-loading foods and vitamin powders for them. Lots of people seem to feed their fish only bloodworms, according to a wide range of posts I see on reddit, facebook, and fish forums, and those people need to feed their fish a better varied diet.
