Cumbernauld town centre - a once world-renowned example of modernist architecture and urban planning. Now considered an idealistic experiment gone wrong, unfit for purpose and a blight on the landscape. So what happened?

We moved to Cumbernauld in 1964 when I was a youngster. I don't remember that the town centre (then in Phase 1) was ever much liked by people. However, back in those times there was more trust in the authorities and I suppose people believed that if the planners thought it was all a good idea then it would all work out well in the end. So now we see how it did work out. I haven't been back in Cumbernauld for many long years, so this film was particularly interesting to me. Thank you.

I suspect the main reason it's had a stay of execution is because they realized how incredibly expensive it would be to demolish a building like that. There's WWII military bases that used less concrete than that. And that's not considering how much asbestos must be in there!

I remember visiting Cumbernauld, forty years ago, to sell double glazing around the various estates. It was beginning to look tired and deprived then, and that was only twenty years after its inception.

Living nearby I can say that it attracted no-one to shop there from more than a 5 miles radius. To the south people preferred shopping in Kirkintilloch or Glasgow! Any further north and people preferred Stirling. I can remember it being an eyesore from the 1970's onwards.

I lived there in the mid 60s & the shopping centre was pants then, knock the horrible monstrosity down. It was so depressing. I live in Livingston now & excellent New Town.

Shame how the Centre has become and eyesore with leaks and dampness, The once great town centre that had loads going for it is now sadly fit for demolition shame on the owners for neglecting it over the years.

It’s a travesty mate. Fond memories of the town centre from when I was a kid and early teens.

I've never been but I do like the architecture, they were probably way ahead of the curve when it came to pedestrianisation aswell really, sadly it hasn't aged well.

Just one, gargantuan building for an under-one-roof town center, what a terrible idea. There seems to be ample land around the area designated to be the town center. They should have built separate buildings to house the functions that the building was meant to house.

I loved my early years, living In Cumbernauld. Especially the Golden Eagle, the Falcon, the Red Comyn. 😪 Such a shame.

After recent storms the roof has blew off and theres now buckets everywhere trying to stop water getting in.. its time to flatten this and build again imo
