This is the full 64 mile, one way trip from Antonito, Colorado to Chama, New Mexico which takes all day. The Cumbres and Toltec is one of America's oldest and most historical railroads dating back to 1881. We travel the same route, using the same locomotives, from the former Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad.
The line was originally built as a narrow gauge railroad for freight as well as passenger service. The Denver and Rio Grande stopped operations in the 1960's, and sold the railroad. Since 1970, the railroad has operated as a tourist railroad carrying millions of people over the years. Fall is considered the best time to ride this train with the aspen trees turning from green to gold. Filmed in October, 2019. More information can be found here. cumbrestoltec.com

That is some train journey! Great scenery and an iconic engine. I had better start saving my money to try this experience first hand. Thanks Tom for uploading this one....I will watch a bit more with every coffee break I have today!

Bravo! Many thanks! The ride on the platform behind 489's tank, curving down the low hills then across the sagebrush prairie into Antonito is a treasured memory of a ride enjoyed a few years back. :-)

Thanks for the temporary escape. I lived in Albuquerque in 95 and 96 and worked on the airport extension putting in the 100 year flood pipe but unfortunately never made it that way. I was going to watch for a few minutes but was amazed at the ever increasing beauty. Needless to say all 2 hrs was a wonderful caveat on a rainy Atlanta Sunday. Well posted...

Believe it or not I have lived in Colorado most of my life and this was my first time riding this train. Finally got around to riding it and it was much more enjoyable that I thought it would be.

I took the ride out of Chama to Cumbres pass and back September 1985. I will never forget the cold passenger cars and the jerking of the brakes going down to Chama. Using dynamic brakes would have put that wasted energy to use to heat the passengers. Travel used to be so basic.

Amazing train ride and steam engine and scenery! But I have noticed that after seeing a few of these wonderful videos, I have never seen any wildlife, not a dear,or any other large animal nor small animal, like a rabbit, nor a single bird of any kind!

There is two trains daily in the Summer. Maybe the noise from the steam engine is scaring them away.

I'm amazed at how crisp and clear your video footage is. What type of camera do you use? I love taking the trip westbound out of Antonito, BTW.

Amazing video!! We’re riding this summer on the same trip from Antonio to Chama! I can’t wait! Also, I do notice some sort of commotion about 1:45:30 in the video where the train goes into emergency and a passenger leaves the train. Do you know what happened there? Again, great video!

Yes that guy was drunk and got into a bad argument with his wife on the train. He was kicked off and walked all the way to the highway.

Some people might appreciate knowing what the little wooden structure on the tender is used for.👍✌️😊🙏🏼

Most trains during this era had a minimum of a engineer, fireman, conductor, and brakeman on the train. There was no room for a 3rd person in the cab of the locomotive as the fireman was always shoving coal in the locomotive, and there was only two seats. So the conductor or brakeman would ride on the locomotive in the little wood shack (called the dog house) on the tender.

Poor 489. They should NOT have converted it. They should just have ran a diesel during high fire danger. What a damn shame.

Does it make a round trip each day? What it it’s home base? Trip time? One hour and 55 minutes??

There is two one way trains. One leaving Antonito, Colorado and the other train leaving Chama, New Mexico. The entire one way trip takes around 8 hours with a 1 hour lunch stop. After you reach either Chama or Antonito you take a bus back to where you came from. Some trips are shorter (such as a half day trip). You either board in Chama or Antonito in the morning.

Doesn't black smoke indicate poorly burned fuel? Thanks for sharing. That's a handsome engine.
@travelingtom923

Yes. Steam locomotives are very inefficient. About 95% of the heat is wasted.
@robertreznik9330
@robertreznik9330 4 жыл бұрын
Efficiencies improved with the Baldwin 5000's burning oil but this improved engine marked the end when replaced with diesel electric in the 1940's

There is many tourist railroads that have "engineer for a hour" programs where you can operate steam or diesel locomotives, with or with out a train for a hour or more. Prices range from about $125 a hour and up. See websites for details search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=Awr9GjD.xW1eFjYAs1FXNyoA;_ylc=X1MDMjc2NjY3OQRfcgMyBGZyA3lmcC10BGZyMgNzYi10b3AEZ3ByaWQDUjdXLnE3Wm1RSHl2VzVZU3l4RkViQQRuX3JzbHQDMARuX3N1Z2cDOQRvcmlnaW4Dc2VhcmNoLnlhaG9vLmNvbQRwb3MDMARwcXN0cgMEcHFzdHJsAzAEcXN0cmwDMzcEcXVlcnkDbG9jb21vdGl2ZSUyMGVuZ2luZWVyJTIwZm9yJTIwYSUyMGhvdXIlMjBtdXNldW0EdF9zdG1wAzE1ODQyNTIzNjE-?p=locomotive+engineer+for+a+hour+museum&fr2=sb-top&fr=yfp-t&fp=1 The Cumbres and Toltec has both a engineer and fireman school where you can operate the locomotive with train but it is pretty expensive cumbrestoltec.com/about-us-2/engineer-fireman-school-2/

Idk about 489 specifically but the railroad has been. Most notable in my mind is the zoo train at the start of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which was pulled by 484
