The Ford FW series of tractors were introduced to compete other brands high hp machines / meet demand from 'Blue customers' for more power.
To fill this gap in the model range Ford bought in Steiger tractors rather than develop there own models. The tractors ranged from 150 hp up to 300 hp + and used proven engines from Cummins rather than Ford units.
Only a couple of FW models were imported into the UK, the Ford FW-30 265 hp (198 kW) and the massive Ford FW-60 of 335 hp (250 kW).
The Ford FW-20 of 210 hp (160 kW) and the Ford FW-40 of 295 hp (220 kW) were only sold in the North American Market.
The FW range was replaced in 1982 by the Versatile built range of articulated tractors when Case IH bought Steiger.
Ford then bought Versatile and merged the operation with New Holland. But when New Holland was sold by Ford to the Fiat group of Italy, and the New Holland division was merged with Case IH to form CNH Global,
the Versatile division had to be sold off under a competition regulator ruling to allow the deal to proceed.

It is. Specifically a PT Steiger narrow frame at 39" wide whereas the ST Steigers frame is 44" wide. Also, PTs have a longer wheelbase than their ST counterparts, 132•50" versus 128•00". PTs could have a 1000 rpm PTO fitted as an option, whereas the STs could not. Another difference is that PTs didn't have the swing Power Divider between the bogies, to reduce strain on the drive line at the articulation point, whilst the STs did. Ford FWs had Cummins V8 903 engines fitted across the range, with varying horsepower outputs achieved by different fuelling rates on the 2 smaller models (USA market), whilst the larger two had a turbocharger fitted. Steiger STs on the other hand, were usually fitted with straight six engines from Cummins or Catapillar, and their torque back up was superior to the V8 engines, which were easy to drag down if going through a tough spot with a soil engaging implement. ST Steigers had RABA drive axles and I think the FW Fords may have been fitted with Clark axles ? Not 100% sure on thar one point, but all the other comparison points are accurate.
