Many thanks to everyone who submitted terrific questions about the piano during our "Ask to Win" contest! This week, Cunningham Piano Co. co-owner Rich Galassini and pianist Hugh Sung address the question, "Are old pianos better than new ones?"

I can't believe he got a brand new Steinway grand piano as his first instrument. He called it a practice piano that he wasn't pleased with lol. Wow.

Cunningham just rebuilt my baby grand, and not only is the cabinet brightened, but the sound is amazing! I just got it back, and we have to do a few more tunings to get the Bosendorfer treble and Steinway Bass strings properly stretched. But having the piano I grew up with elevated not only to , but above it's former glory, is amazing! Bravo! and Rich is a delight to deal with.

A Old Piano is better than No Piano. Mine is one I got free ( it was along the road with a sign saying free piano), a 1940's vintage upright grand. It replaces the newer used Spinet I payed a 150 for which later I sold for 75 to a freind. The Piano is definately better then it used to be, as I painted it Bright Red!! ( My wife is chinese, she said red would be a good color), someone had painted it some ugly greenish yellow puke color. I had a little over a week after I decided to paint it until the new carpet was going to be installed in our livingroom which I was remodeling, so I did a quick disassemble-stripdown-paint not knowing what I was doing. My 7 year old is learning boogie woogie on it. On his second piano lesson his teacher started him learning Baby Elephant walk! He is picking it up quite well. he's a smart kid, taught himself to read while he was still 3 and he is ambidextrous. Hope the old red piano keeps him encouraged to play. not sure if a new piano would do that. Computer games are so enticing you know, ..... Soo... is a old piano better then a new piano. I would say Yes!! your mileage may very! ( Need to get it tuned soon)

Two comments. First is I believe that just about every mechanical device gets better with age. Initially any mechanisms are tight but after wear they loosen up. Hammer felts are not set in yet as they will change with time and to me they get better. Also, it takes some time (although shorter) for any acoustic device to stabilize into a given environment. Second is that this is a two way street as not only does the piano change with time so does the player and his/her response to what they feel and hear. Many times I've played a new piano that I've purchased and found either the sound or feel wasn't quite what I was looking for. For example too clear, crisp sound that after playing the piano for a long period of time I get used to this sound and it becomes acceptable. I'm speaking mainly of digital pianos. However, my M&H Model BB after 20 years sounds greater than ever. I love the sound and feel. Of course I tune and voice the piano often so this adds to the quality of sound but overall this is just a great piano. Thanks Rich for selling me this piano. It truly is like a part of my family.

I doubt older pianos are better. I like some older ones better, though. But it depends on the maker. Yamaha or Kawai, I think the new CX, CFX or GX, SK anything are way better than their predecessors, and if they last, sound and feel way better than older models. I think the vintage C. Bechsteins, though, sound sweeter than the somewhat bright newer C Bechsteins. Steinways just may be more mellow with age. Bosendorfer? The 280VC is new, and that's the one I like best. Some other pianos changed ownership and aren't the same now. Some, like the wonderful Playel, aren't made anymore, I really like many of them. What's new becomes old in time. The better older pianos that have survived are great pianos. The bad ones weren't worth keeping around. Some built today may become great pianos. Pianos are odd creatures, some of them are just standouts of any brand. Same model, but one piano can really stand out and stand the test of time.

A brand new Steinway straight from the factory will need time to stay in tune and may be a little quirky at first before it plays as well as possible. But after being broken in, its performance will be absolutely top-notch. Some older instruments that have been well-maintained and/or restored or rebuilt will play just as well or very close to it. I have a 1929 Steinway and it has been refurbished but the case and soundboard and bridges are original. It has a wonderful, sweet tone that is common to vintage "Golden Age" American pianos such as Steinways. You would be hardpressed to coax the same tone out of newer Steinways because some of the manufacturing is different although my piano has new Steinway hammers. The new or newer Steinway is a better instrument in terms of maintenance and viability but I adore the old world sound from my vintage instrument. Ultimately it will need new pins and strings and the action will probably need to be reworked as well.

The problem with the best piano tuning is at the mercy of the technician. Electronic and computer tuning methods are more consistent and dependable, but unfortunately still not accepted by many traditional technicians as the best methods. In most piano cases how they sound is how skillfully they were tuned and voiced. Main reason the electronic piano in its many new forms is winning the market for the average player, slowly but surly.
