For this study, I used pastel pencil on Mingart sanded paper. This drawing took about 35 minutes at my studio in San Jose, California. (I used Google Translate for Spanish - hope it's good enough to understand.)

What a beautiful portrait. It feels solid and alive at the same time. Organic. I hope it makes sense what I'm trying to say. Thanks for sharing the whole process. Spanish subtitles are really appreciated. Keep them coming.

At 4 minutes 43 seconds, the camera angle changes and we see the full paper. Apart from the difficulty in viewing during those few minutes, I'd say that Mr. Nguyen has avoided all of the errors that I have noticed on other instructional videos: He doesn't explain by speaking as he works. He works and adds text afterward when he can be articulate and clear. The music is soft and not distracting because there is no vocal track to compete with it. We see his model as he works. The camera is trained on the paper in such a way that his hand doesn't obscure the place that he is working. AND, he was thoughtful enough to offer subtitles in Spanish! One couldn't ask for much more.

Thanks for the demo. I noticed that you use warm colors for drawing. Does your paper is warm or cool grey? I wonder if on a cool grey paper, it's better to draw with warm or cool colors to describe the subject. I also noticed that you don't use blender (or stump), is there any reason?

Beautiful drawing and a great demonstration. Thank you, however I feel a lesser gifted artist would create a problem for themselves, by placing the model on the same side as the drawing hand, i.e. the wrong side. This is the traditional position for a left handed artist. Over the years, I have proven time and time again, that by placing your subject on the traditional correct side, this can dramatically and often immediately, improve the students work and observation skills of any subject. This applies to any subject, not just portraiture. Thank you.

Thanks Daniel! Good tip!

I'm very curious as to why this is the case, Daniel. I do typically place my subject on the left, as I'm right handed, but I have worked the opposite way. Does it have something to do with the way we read, from left to right?
@danielmcgowan49704 жыл бұрын
@@ghuntressart669 Hi, Thank you for your question. There are many explanations as to why 'Drawing the correct side works. First and foremost, for obtaining a clear sight of your subject without your drawing hand blocking your view, if only for a second or two. Stepping back a few feet and observing two artists working on the same portrait, one drawing the correct side and the other not, it immediately becomes apparent that the artist drawing on the wrong side has cut his view of the subject and surrounding area by up to 70%, even more important, he is imposing an unnatural twist and tension, with his head and drawing hand working in opposite directions. When drawing the correct side, the drawing hand and body are working in unison, in an open stance natural relaxed position. Another important point, is, when drawing the correct side, there is less head and eye movement needed. Hope this helps. Enjoy your art.

I know a lot of artists cringe at the sight/size method to portrait drawing.
@CuongNguyenArt4 жыл бұрын
I didn’t use use sight size method here. I used comparative method instead.
@barbarawilliams70124 жыл бұрын
I’ve hardly started portrait drawing but I do know that this is not sight/ size method. As with music and many other things in life, we all have personal tastes. Even though I prefer a looser, more expressive style I really appreciate Mr Cuong,s demos - he teaches enveloping and blocking in superbly and I love that he expresses his love for drawing and especially that he encourages us to pick up a pencil and draw, and draw, and draw ........

@gcbdiverbrockplumbing51634 жыл бұрын
I agree, he is a good artist but using the sight size method takes away a deeper more interesting interpretation of the model.

@@televisor9506 ...how wonderful to champion the artist. Still, a valid critique can come from someone who doesn't perform. Many fine books of criticism have been written about novels by people who never write novels themselves. If only artists and performers offered critiques, many excellent observations would be lost.
