Yeah I totally agree with that last sentence. I was playing contra 4 recently and I noticed how the developers were able to take ideas from all the previous games and add them to not only to the mechanics, but the level design. In the first level you were hooking up a lot and there was a sense of verticality and choosing either a top path or a bottom path in some sections. That level went through so many interesting sections, the highlight being when you reach the giant laser up above. You had enemies below but also the giant laser above while also taking to account that the giant laser can blast the hole in the ground, while also having to hook up to the the bars above because the laser might've blasted a hole too large to jump over, sometimes you'll have to jump off then zip up to the bar because it could be right above the wide hole. You weren't only shooting things, you were carefully looking at your environments to survive and that is interesting platforming design in these run and guns.
