If you use the Cura 3d Slicer you should watch this video. In the video, I walk you through the steps to both create a new 3d printer profile but also how to optimize the most important slicer settings. With almost 30 minutes of hints and tips, this video has something for users of any FDM style 3d printer.
Learn how to optimize 3d Prints for your ANET ET4, Monoprice 3d Printers, Creality Ender or Creality CR10 style printers. Even if you use a different slicer, such as PrusaSlicer or Simplify 3d, this video covers valuable concepts.

Absolutely great -- After decades out of any schooling I feel like I’m back in class with a super teacher who’s thoughtfully walking me through the otherwise-boggling technical details in such a way that I leave with increasingly robust comprehension of the underlying principles that lead naturally to those details. Thank you! 🙏

Thank you for the very detailed explanation of Cura. I've been printing for a little over 2 weeks now and have had a whole host of problems the groups and pages have said are very atypical. I appreciate you taking the time to show beginners things that others may forget are completely foreign for those just getting into it. Thanks again and I look forward to watching more of your videos and as you said, learning more together.

Another great tutorial. I'm a " mature" noob who's only recently been bitten by the 3D bug and have found all of your videos brilliant. There are many you tubers that I follow and all have their style, some a bit slick, others far too fast but watching you is like being taught by your favourite teacher or lecturer!! Clear and concise and put in a way we can all follow. Looking forward to more!!

Shalom You are just wonderful. You just vaxed me with your tutorials. After a 1 year of 3D print machine owner and still not finding the right way to use the machine efficiently. There are tons of tutorials on web, that I was always in the confused state of mind as whom to believe. Than one day I found your tutorial and that was it. I have a Ender 3V2. Now I just follow your instructions and successfully printed many things. Toda Rabba for that and keep up the good Job.

Irv, you sir are a priceless find for me. GREAT CONTENT. I'm shopping for a replacement for my OLD Afinia H479 and I think I've decided on a Original Prusa i3 MK3S. The Afinia used it's own software with built in slicer so I've never had to know about or learn any other software, other than Sketch up to draw models. I searched looking for answers and you sir have been a Godsend. Thanks for explaining in a clear, concise and thorough manner! I enjoy learning with you. :)

I have watched over 100 hours of 3D videos in preparing for my first build and print (Ender 5 Plus) to include aftermarket upgrades and the like. I just got my machine built and ready to start churning out the hot PLA into cool things... I froze. I did not know just what - the next indicated thing - was. After all that time and effort, I had to get back to basics and learn how to start the right way. The Better Half of me suggested I go find the Dr. MAX that I was bragging on about "You like him and the way he teaches, maybe he can help." Well, Dr. Vax - you have. And I wanted you to know just how much I like your style and great attitude! Thank you so very much, If you ever leave KZfaq - Please let us know, so we are not left without your great teaching style! EDIT: I have subscribed to many KZfaq 3D channels - but you are the only one I have EVER hit the notification bell for. You're that good.

You Sir made my day and desserve 100 times more views. As a recently graduated mecanical engineer, I've worked both with fdm printers (huge stratasys fridge like printers with dual material and soluble support with 100 infil everytime for prototyping parts which will be injection molded when the final product is released and sla for fast prototyping. As a graduation gift I gave myself and ender 3. I really like to tinker aroune but most ressources pitch you what setting you should use and that's it, you on the other hand open my eyes to a lot of interesting features I can use to make my prints better, and you actually explain why and when some parameters are useful to play with. This might be too tecnical for some peoples, but you're going deep enough for me to get useful knowledge about stuff I thought I knew. Your support video also save me lot of filament and time already and I think you desserve a lot more recognition for what you do. Hat's off to you, take my subscription and my likes.

I have spent the last week documenting first on modeling, then on printers themselves, and now on the process of actually printing things. And I have to say, I think I am in the right place: after this one video, it's immediately obvious to me that you are what I consider a "beautiful person" :) I mean that in the sense of your own comment at 28:10, of course, that (paraphrasing) learning is half the fun in this. You seem to take such joy in transmitting what you learned that it transpires in your video. I'm about to spend quite some time on this channel (wasn't I supposed to catch up on my sleep during these holidays ? :) ).

As usual, a very helpful video! Recent subscriber, but I've been watching a lot of your videos, and they are chock full of excellent information. If I may make a recommendation, it would be great if you had a 'table of contents' with time stamps, maybe as a 'stickied' first comment. For longer videos, that would help people immensely, especially for people looking for a specific aspect of Cura. I will watch every minute, but sometimes in a pinch I go looking for very specific bits of info (ie supports). Having a TOC would help there too. I tend to refer to your videos multiple times, looking for those bits. Keep up the good work sir! Siskel and eBart give you two thumbs way up!

Nice video, as always. One little addition: magical layerhight only applys to printers without ABL or with fading ABL after some layers. As ABL meassures a grid of points (f.e 5 by 5) and interpolates between, magic layers do not work anymore, as the real poition by the bending of the bed. So if the correction by the mesh at a point is -0.03 and your layerhight is 0.2, the z the axis moves to is 0.17 - not magic at all. But with the optinon to fade activated in firmware, correction is reduced or ehanced layer by layer, so you might be back to magic layer hight. But on most printers fading is not activated... A better way for magical layerhight is quite sinple: Change leadscrew and its nut to a new one with a lead of 2mm 1 start. So one rotation (200 fullsteps) does 2mm of movement, which makes 0.01mm per fulstep. So any layerhigt you can set in the slicer becomes magic, as any layerhigth with twocounts behind the point of course always is a multiple of 0.01... Done that to most of my printers (exept th prusas with integrated leadscrew) an I am very happy with it. Microstepping does not help much. The torque gets exponential less with increasing microstepping. The tourque has to work against gravity - mayve the torque of a halve- or quarterstep might be enouth to hold position against gravity - but certanly not a 1/256 microstep. High microstepps are not for more precision, but for smother movement. Fullsteps (and maybe some low microsteps) can start and stop movement. But higher microstepping only supply enough torque to keep an existing movement constant and smooth (and therefore reduce noise) if they do not have to work against to much force. Prusa ran into that problem on the extruder - with the 1/256 interpolated microstepping issue#602 inconsitent extrusion occured. The solved this by reprogramming the driver to 1/32 native microstepping, giving the extruder more precision. So magic numbers are good if you do not use ABL (or manual mesh). As soon as you use ABL (or manual mesh) it gets useless. But you can solve this by some methods: 1. Increase fullstep-resolution a) leadscrew with 2mm lead or b) 0.9° stepper and leadscrew with 4mm lead c) geared stepper and beltdriven z 2. reduce load on z by avoiding gravity, so the little tourqe of a 1/256 microstep is enough. So rent a room for your printer on the ISS, but do not forget to by an anti-backslash nut ;-) I think the solutions under point 1 are a little bit lower in cost than for solution 2. So I recomment 1a) as the cheapest solution. Solution 1b would be more expansive without better results. 1c is quite interesting than you have z-wobble - a belt-driven z will be always free of wobble. As I live in germany and it is about half past 1 in the morning, I now will choose solution 2. Because it is time to sleep and doing solution 2 in my dream is for free ;-)

Hi Dr Vax, I'm new to the world of 3D printing having been given an Ender3 for my birthday. I have had a very bad experience so far but am finally getting on top of all of the issues I have encountered. I now have a problem I am unable to resolve on my own and am turning to you for advice because your videos have been so helpful so far. I have recently installed Cura 4.8, I printed a part using Cura in PETG which I had previously printed in PLA and the results were excellent. Armed with this result I wanted to print a large part in PETG, I had previously tried printing this in PLA using Prusa Slicer and it was pretty awful. Encouraged by the result of my previous part I loaded this large part into Cura, however it showed with cross hatching lines all over it and a message saying it couldn't slice because it was not Manifold.. I changed my drawing of the part and tried again, this time I got a message saying please review your settings and check if your model , fits within the build volume, is assigned to an enabled extruder and that not all models are set as mesh fixes. I think I understand all of this an have, as far as I can see, addressed all of these points, however, it still comes up with the same message. I really am at a loss, any advice would be very welcome. Thanks in advance. Graham.

I suspect a modelling error might be the root cause of the error message. There is a bit of a trick to modelling in solid modelling software so as not to have gaps and cracks and hidden surfaces inside the model. This often happens because the designer is using approximate positions, instead of precision positions. So surfaces may not truly join at the edges. If the model has complex curvature, it can take some effort to make sure the surfaces knit at the edges. This means that if two surfaces meet at a boundary, make sure they overlap by placing them deliberately in interference (then merge them) then break to surfaces again, and discard any 'waste' overlap pieces. Unfortunately, this process can be highly software specific to deal with, but this may give you a clue about a different course to take in creating your models.

I was given a ender 3 max. A lot of you guides have been a god send but I am confused when it comes to cura. It is my first printer and I am fresh into deep water lol. It came with a runout sensor and I was gifted with it a BLTouch. I had to get some m3 screws and t nuts and change the z end stop down and just got the bed leveled. Given that I am new again I am lost with cura

Great video! Thank you for your time and effort. I have an old ender 3 pro…I have never updated the firmware from V-1.0. It seems to print ok, but not quite as accurately as new. Hope updating the cura settings will help.

Good job, Irv. Cura 4.8 just came out so you might want to consider an update.

I'm very new to 3D printing and found your videos. VERY helpful. But I do have a question. When making adjustments to settings, is there 3-4 that make a big enough difference to play with? And if so, what are they? And lastly... is there a particular order you fiddle with the settings? Are there settings that need to be set before moving on to another setting - meaning... you mess with one, then play with another and the 1st needs to be readjusted. I'm ready to spend some time making a bunch of pieces - The end result will be MUCH better prints. Can't Wait!! Thanks again for your teacher's heart mindset.

You are by far the best! Thank you very much. I have a FLSUN Q-5. Have you done videos on that?

Really helpful video, you make it easy to follow. I've had my first printer (Sovol SV01) for just under two weeks now, and the adjustments I've done (fiddling with PLA print temp and retraction) to try to reduce stringing have made it worse! I'll try again based on this. Like the cat! One question: in Cura one can adjust or add to materials. For instance to change the print temp what I actually did was create a new filament 'Generic PLA 2' derived from 'Generic PLA', set the temp and activated it. Then that temp fed through into the profile. Is that the wrong way to do it? When is it best to modify the material, and when to just override it in the profile?

Dr. V. Thank you for all of your videos. They have helped me tremendously. I have a question. Before I figured out how to make a new profile, I inadvertently changed the default ones (ender3). Is there a way to get them back to their original settings without changing the profiles I added? Thank you. PS..Glad to know you recovered from your illness.
