Cura Supports for Beginners: Tutorial & Recommend Settings
3D printing is an amazing hobby, but it's not without its frustrations. For most people, supports are one of the biggest frustrations. It can be really overwhelming trying to understand all the different support settings in Cura. So I decided to create this video to help you understand the basics of adding supports to a model in Cura. I cover the best Cura support settings to get started. I also give you a full beginner's guide on what Cura supports are and how to make better use of them.
As always if you have any questions about 3D printing feel free to post them in the comments or reach out to me on Facebook, Discord, Etc.😊

@@SlicePrintRoleplay Same!! Been printing since 3d printers where the size of a small bathroom!! and each new printer has caused soo much frustration at the start to learn all the best settings for things. I wish I would have known about the plugins and had a better support understanding earlier on. Nice job. I would love if you could post a short video or even just a picture of what the model looked like after you printed it and removed the supports. If you have one already can you just link it below.

Thanks for the video! I printed my first model yesterday, which was a chair prop for a stop motion video I am working on. I just left the support settings at default, and boy did it make a mess. I basically was completely unable to remove all of the support material. Not even close. It is pretty much part of the model at this point. These tips were really helpful for tweaking it.

Thanks for posting. I design in Blender3D and have been building my own supports into my models because I never really followed or understood the automatically generated supports of the slicer, and I found that the slicer's supports used a ton more filament than the ones that I could design, and also tended to be harder to remove. But I think I will look into them again after watching this, since building your own custom supports can be quite tedious.

Thank you for a great explanation of the many support options. I've been very happy with cura supports on my Ender3, except... I wish the layer immediately above the support interface is more solid. I always see gaps between the lines as if it's printing too high, which I suppose it is because the minimal gap is one layer height. So the filament is "dropped" one layer down rather than resting on previous layer as normal. Do you have any thoughts on improving the quality of the layer just above the support interface layer?

I actually just attempted a print of a Zard yesterday and looked great 10 hours in but started to spaghetti. I have a feeling since I used a .16mm layer height the support gap might have been off. Very new to printing so gonna give these settings a try. Also thanks for the add-on tip. Definitely helps!

Unfortunately you will have some print failures in the beginning while you're learning. So don't beat yourself up about it. Definitely try to understand what caused the failure and consider it a leaning experience. Definitely let me if these settings give you better results.

@@SlicePrintRoleplay Hi, are there ways to lower the printing time and weight of the print? I'm trying to print the decorative top of a Chinese lantern. It's currently at 18 hrs and 5 mins and 77g.
@SlicePrintRoleplay
@SlicePrintRoleplay Жыл бұрын
@@joannayee8 absolutely you can! There are three settings that can really cut down on print time and weight. First, Infill percentage. For most models you can get away with an Infill value between 5% and 25%. If the part doesn't have a lot of small intersecting inner chambers and won't be subjected to a lot of stress then 5% is usually fine. But play around with different settings and look at your sliced preview. From there you can see how different Infill settings will effect your print. Second, Infill type. There are lots of different types of Infill. Cura has an option for Lightning Infill which put Infill only where it's needed. This can save time, but the model won't be as strong as if you used a standard Infill types. I recommend Grid Infill pattern. It's one of the fastest Infill types and provides great results in most cases. Third, Wall Line Count. This value has a dramatic impact on print time. It determines how many walls you have running around the perimeter of your print. Think of Wall Line Count as the outermost walls running around your house. A higher value gives you stronger walls and (sometimes) more detail. However, it will also increase print time as the nozzle will spend more time running around the perimeter of the print. In most situations a Wall Line Count of 2 is fine. Let me know if that answers your question.

I mostly use tree support because its easy to remove, i am using 0.2mm support z distance and 0.8mm support x/y distance, but sometimes my supports are fusing to the model. Im using FLSUN super racer printer. Should i increase fan speed so that supports dont fuse?

Tree supports printed in a much softer filament could be awesome but they always went in my model or made it easier for my model to break

Fairly new to 3d printing and these video has helped me a lot-keep up the good work. I just have one question. What temperatures, print speeds and fans speeds would you recommend when printing with supports?
@SlicePrintRoleplay
@SlicePrintRoleplay Жыл бұрын
I typically leave the speed settings at the defaults for the standard Cura profile for 0.2mm, 0.1mm, etc. As for nozzle temp. I'd highly recommend printing a temp tower test for each filament you use on each printer. That will help you determine how to get the best results. Here's an easy way to set up a temp tower test. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e6d3kphkndHDkoE.html

Thank you very much for this video! I used this setup and prints were awesome, the only problem I have is Support Interface fusing with the print. Should I decrease interface thickness or density? Or maybe increase the support Z distance?
@SlicePrintRoleplay
@SlicePrintRoleplay Жыл бұрын
That's great to hear! It's hard to say without seeing your prints. However, yes in general I'd start by reducing the Support Z Distance. Just remember the rounding rule I explained in this video. If you run into issues feel free to post about them in my Facebook group I respond pretty quickly there.

I had a feeling that a portion of my current cosplay prop printing project required supports.... and indeed it does. My question is... How does one proceed to pry said supports off said model after it's completion? I was getting filament ramen early on in the previous prints and knew full well that I'd be stuck with the trade off of having to remove supports. Any useful tips/tricks in doing so without destroying your model??

Thank you for this! I just got the new ender 3 v3 se. When I had to choose my printer, it was not an option so I chose Ender 3 / v2. Is this an okay configuration? I also changed the build size to 220 from 235
@SlicePrintRoleplay
@SlicePrintRoleplay 10 ай бұрын
That may work, but the Ender 3 v2 and V3 have different styles of extruder. So you may see some issues. You'll probably get better results from using the printer profile for the Elegoo Neptune 3 Pro. It's very similar to the Ender 3 V3. Also, the bed of the V3 is actually 235. It's set up to not use the edges of the bed because some types of beds need clips to hold them in place. Cutting the bed from 235 to 220 (in the software) helps ensure that the nozzle doesn't hit those clips. However, with magnetic beds you can actually use 100% of your build volume because there are no bed clips to worry about.
