In this series, I talk about games I'm moving on from, and other ways I curate my collection. In episode 6, I talk about my biggest cull yet (12 games leaving) and provide an update on my 2023 board game collection goals that I outlined back in episode 5.
What do you think about these games? Do you own any of them? Have you gotten rid of any of these? Which other games have you parted ways with recently?

Totally makes sense, and this is exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for. My wife and son were asleep, and I was maybe a little paranoid about waking them up. Looking forward to having a sound-proofed game room with a door so I can be much louder while filming. Still, in the meantime I'll try to find a solution. Thanks for watching and for letting me know!

For me the biggest obstacle to playing Evolution (or Evolution: Climate) is finding other people who want to play it. I really think people should give it more of a chance, and as always I recommend the *amazing* digital implementations (iOS, Android, Steam, Switch) to anyone who is curious, I think using those can get you over the hump of learning the different strategies.

Excellent points, Paul. It really does take a couple plays (with most people) to really understand how to play well, even if you technically understand the rules. Such a good game.

Great list, of these I have only played Heat, and feel like I am in the same boat. It sounded very exciting when it first came out and I have now tried it a few times on BGA and it hasn't quite stuck for me. It is fun and I assume playing in person with people would be a different experience with the tension and interaction, but it still doesn't seem as exciting as everyone was making it out to be. I'm glad I haven't spent money on it but will continue to play on BGA and see if I start loving it or something. As others have said the only criticism I could say is the volume/energy level seemed a little low but saw that you said it was because everyone in your house was asleep, so completely understandable! Can't wait to have more frequent videos from all of you guys!
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words and feedback! No disagreements from me on the volume/energy, and I appreciate you understanding. Still, I'll work at improving that going forward. I haven't tried Heat on BGA yet, but I will say that playing it in person led to a lot of good moments where people were shouting or getting excited about pulling off a perfectly timed slipstream or whatnot. So definitely worth a shot if you get the chance to play a physical copy with a good group, but I do think most people should try before buying.

@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 8 ай бұрын
Free Ride is fantastic! I've played it twice so far (once with 3 players and once with 4) and everyone enjoyed it a lot both times. There have been some complaints about how the board and cards should've been colour-coded to make it easier to see where the cities and routes are, especially if your knowledge of European geography isn't very strong. It didn't bother everyone in my group, but after seeing on the BGG forums how some people have coloured their boards, I can see how that would help. Either way - the rules are really simple, the turns move quickly, and the decisions are really tough. Great game and we'll definitely review it on the channel in the next few months.

You raise some disturbingly valid points about Mind MGMT's player count issues. In the game I ran with four complete strangers, I, as a Rogue Agent, couldn't get a word in edgewise as my fellow agents rarely relinquished the floor. Despite that, their analysis was solid but their willingness to commit to a capture was daunting so I decided that it was up to me. My first capture attempt was a failure but my second was not and a rounding cheer of success sounded out from the newbie agents. That aside, I think I'll need a few more plays before I get the urge to say goodbye to my copy.
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 8 ай бұрын
Yeah that can be a frustrating experience. Mind MGMT is one of those games where it can be amazing when it's at its best, but it can also be a bit of a letdown in the wrong setting or with the wrong group. I'd love to play it again some time, but I'm trying to be extra selective about what I keep in my own collection. Don't let my thoughts influence your decision-making if you're not ready to move on from your copy yet. It really is a great design.

Scrabble works best when you all know the 2-letter words (aa - a Hawaiian word for lava flow - and mo - a shortened form of moment - spring to mind). It's a game about area control, since triple and double scores can be so impactful.
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 8 ай бұрын
Yup, I just personally don't enjoy playing an area control game that is based on knowledge of obscure vocabulary that people rarely (if ever) use. There are too many word games I'd rather play if I'm looking to play something with words, and on the flipside, there are too many area control games I'd rather play if I'm looking for that type of game. It sits in the middle of both categories and doesn't scratch either itch for me. But of course this is all subjective, and I understand why it's such a popular and successful game that people still play today. Thanks for watching!

Well done with your ongoing project. My current totals are 250 games, with 59 on the shelf of shame (though about 150 of the games and almost 40 of the shelf of shame are small box card games). Curating the collection is great - its cathartic to let games go and to slowly watch the overall quality of your collection go up and up.

I agree entirely. This has been such a rewarding and liberating process. "Cathartic" was probably the best word for it, actually, as you said. Forum Trajanum would make my top 40 all time games, but the truth was it wasn't making the table. Whenever I suggested playing it my wife would say can we play Trajan instead. I love this! It's like therapy ha ha! Just good reminder to avoid the over consumption mind frame and just because it's time for a game to move on, doesn't make it a bad game! I was up around 230 games earlier this year, I was trying to get down under 150, so far I'm to 183 and feel much lighter already, especially because I'm not always 'on to the next l' and actually playing and replaying games that I love!
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 8 ай бұрын
Yesss! Nicely done! It definitely is therapeutic. I think someone else used the word "cathartic" which is also accurate. And I totally agree - moving on from a game doesn't mean that it's bad, there can be so many good reasons to let something go. And the bonus is that someone else will be able to enjoy it. 230 down to 183 is great! Seems like our collection sizes and stats aren't too far off. As I keep doing these feel free to let me know how your progress is going too, I'd love to get updates, and maybe we can help push each other to keep culling in pursuit of the "ultimate" collection.

Yes! Absolutely, your video a while back about 'not buying' for the year was a huge inspiration for me to do my first big cull ever. I haven't stuck to not buying new games as well as you (if my favorites would stop publishing new stuff, it would be easier ha ha I don't have the will power to resist a new lacerda, stonemaier, Rosenberg or garphill game, and I'm a sucker for an expansion to a game I already own and love) However, in comparison to how many games I was picking up last year to this year, I have definitely raised the bar and really make sure to do my research before I click add to cart these days, so I feel better about that at least. I am happy to see you guys are back and will keep you posted =)

@brianb5145 - I believe you're the first person to have commented on the lighting, but this is exactly the type of feedback I'm looking for. Is it too dark? Too bright? Too warm (orange) or too cold (blue)? Anything in particular about it that you think I could improve? Just for some context here - I know it looks a bit different than our previous videos, but I got a pretty good lesson in lighting from Braiden, who teaches this stuff as part of his full-time job, and we specifically decided to go with a slightly warmer look and a bit of shading to add some contrast, which makes me appear less "flat" if that makes sense. They do this a lot in movies and TV shows too. But I'm open to any and all feedback and will take it all into consideration.

Regardless, it's a phenomenal set of puzzles and you're entirely correct that Joe is a super pleasant dude - I've been friends with him on Facebook ever since the original campaign and gotten to talk to him quite a bit. My only issue with Relics is that I have a really hard time classifying it as a game because it's a series of (super interesting!) solo puzzles. Still love it though.

So I have recently just started getting rid of games. Before, I was all about them having a spot in my collection because they were old or had some sentimental value, but I have bought a couple of games the past couple of months that have changed my mind. I've gotten rid of Carc: New World, Settlers of Catan card game, Nautilus, Dragonlance board game, Azul, Starfarers of Catan, Industria, and there are now a few more on the list to get rid of. The reason is I bought Heat: PttM, and Vindication. For some reason those triggered something in me that made me realize there were games in my collection I was NEVER going to play because I have better games or games I want to get that will get played. The ones I got rid of aren't worth anything and there was no real reason to keep them other than just to have them for show, but I find I don't care about that any more. Maybe because I'm older (48)? I don't know, but now I see games that are eating space that better games could take.

Would have been interesting to know which games that remain in your collection hit the table instead of the culled games. For example what would you play instead of Grand Carnival … or Caper, … or what hits the table in your gaming group in place of Nidavellir?
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard 8 ай бұрын
Hmm, good point, I usually try to do this but sometimes I forget, or if the video feels like it's already going to be pretty long I might stop talking about a game even though I still have things left to say. I think for Caper: Europe I mentioned one or two - I would definitely play Battle Line, Lost Cities, or Air, Land, & Sea ahead of it, in terms of lane battling games. I would also play Radlands or Riftforce ahead of it. For The Grand Carnival, some of my favourite polyomino games I would prefer to play in that family-weight category that play in a similar time would be (in no particular order) Patchwork, Spring Meadow, Llamaland, or Tiny Towns. As for Nidavellir - that one is tough because I can't think of a situation where we've considered playing Nidavellir and instead played something else comparable. I've owned it for over 3 years though and not a single person has ever requested to play it. And any time I see it on the shelf, I just think "I'd rather play it on Board Game Arena and use this time to play something else instead", but that "something else" isn't necessarily another drafting/bidding/set collection game. Maybe Ra, but it's not quite the same. It really comes down to the BGA version just being much smoother for me, and me not wanting to buy 2 expansions for a game I won't play very often in-person. Great feedback though, I'll try to mention alternatives to games leaving in future videos!

You're absolutely right, I don't realize all the uhs and ums while recording, but while editing I noticed that too. It's not an easy thing to catch yourself doing at the time, but I'll continue to work on being mindful of that. As for the vocal inflection - that definitely needed some work in this video. I was probably too tired when recording, and trying to be quiet as my family was asleep. Anyway, all great feedback, thanks for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts. It really helps. 🙂

What shelves do you use to store your games? You are one of the few that does not use a Kallax.

I'm not exactly sure what they're called, we got them used off a website called Kijiji (basically a smaller version of Craigslist that is very popular here in Manitoba). They're modular shelves so you can adjust all the heights. There are 4 vertical pieces to frame the entire unit, and then tons of shelves that you can piece in wherever you want them. I love it because some boxes are odd sizes so I've adjusted them to be ideal for my current collection. Wish I could be more helpful and give you a product name.

How and where did you get Fresh Fish?

I think it was briefly in stock at Board Game Bliss (an online Canadian retailer) a couple years ago after not being available anywhere for a while. I quickly snagged a copy when I could, but I haven't really seen it around since then. Tough game to find. If you're not aware of www.boardgameoracle.com that's the best place to check for games - just set your country in the top-right corner (if yours is on the list) and search a game, it'll show you anywhere that has (or had) it.

You’re speaking quietly. Is someone sleeping? Other than that, great vid! Are you selling these games online? Cheers!

He has monsters that live in his basement. Shush or they'll awaken.

Haha, thanks! Yeah, my wife and son were both sleeping. I'll try to record when they're awake and/or not home next time. As for selling my games - so far I've always been able to sell them locally which I'd prefer to do. Selling online is a last resort for me, not only due to the work involved but mainly because shipping to and from Canada is pretty expensive.

Why base Kingdomino and not Origins without modules?

I listed a few reasons in the video, but mostly it comes down to Origins having more negatives than positives for me. I would never use a bunch of the components in there and it's a bigger box.

True, but most of the extra stuff feels like unnecessary fluff to me. I'd rather move it on to someone who will actually take advantage of the 3 modes of play.

@@AllYouCanBoard I hear you with not wanting the expansion material - I don't know if it's just me - but as I've aged during my 25 yrs in the hobby - I now prefer streamlined rules, low on components (e.g. just cards, dice, tiles or cubes), light to filler, with some decision depth - I don't know if you will see this as your baby grows - maybe you'll just grab that filler and play with your wife?

@tonycork2pa469 I'm in the same boat in terms of streamlined rules and fewer components. The less time I'm spending setting up and reading rules, the more time I'm actually playing games!

Hah, well games should be played and it's been 2 or 3 years now since we've played it here. It's a great game and there's a better chance of someone else getting to enjoy it.
