When my dad was in the Royal Navy they did an exercise with the dutch navy and back in port visited each others ships. The Dutchmen in the mess dad visited presented the Brits with a bottle of Dutch gin with hand written Dutch on it- he only found out years later that they have written any Dutchmen seeing the by now empty bottle was honour bound to replace it with a full one for the Brits.

I was about to mention the exact same thing. This is everything great about Great Britain and why I admire them so much as a peoples! @@Kellen6795 Big problem is they aren't all rioters. There are genuine protesters and the thugs are using them as cover. This requires boots on the ground and lots of restraint using less than lethal alternatives. We swear oaths to serve the constitution as well as state and federal laws. That includes respecting the right to speak your mind, gather peacefully and protest. Not even counting concerns of collateral damage and lives.

@John Smith - Eh? What? It's the THIN porcelain that's the GOOD stuff. The thinner the better. Looks fragile, but it's totally shockproof and unbreakable until the cat jumps up and proves otherwise. Thick porcelain is only good for toilet bowls. People who put milk in a cup before the tea are beings of infinite evil and quite beyond the pale. Ghastly upstarts, they probably think it's necessary to raise one's little finger when drinking. Horrible. Wrong. Ugh. No. Bad. Stop it. Nasty. Like those Merkins who have teabags with strings on them that dangle over the side of the cup like tampons. Ridiculous. No wonder those colonist chappies ended up dumping all that tea in Boston Harbour. (Yes, Harbour, not Harbor.) I can't afford proper thin porcelain, so I use a 2-pint enamelled tin mug instead. It's not only cat-proof - it bounces when you drop it - but a drink stays hot for half an hour. Good for dunking biscuits, too. (You can wade in to fish-out the soggy bits.)

Alexander Challis. Sorry, don’t understand your point regarding the Conquerer? We were testing the Chobham armour not the gun. There were rumours that years before there were during live firing trials with the Conqueror at Kircudbright where it was fired with the dummy Obturators fitted which blew back into the turret killing the crew. In my time the dummy Obturator was a complete plug stopping any chance of of loading a live round. We had a few Conqueror hulks on the range park, the turret was huge to allow for the loading mechanism which used a brass cased round instead of the bag charges we used.

Excellent question regarding logistics and maintenance teams. Hopefully this gets some research.

If a WWII German tank broke down on the march this would happen. First, the tank pulls out of the column (if able) and puts out a standard 'broken down' marker behind the tank. This is so vehicles in column behind do not think this is a road halt and stop. The column just passes and leaves broken down tank. At this point the crew will be analyzing problem. If they cannot fix problem they sort out the tow cables ready for towing. Always last in a column 'serial' is a light car with a sergeant mechanic (sometimes called the Convoy Maintenance Sgt), and a motorcycle dispatch rider. The sergeant will advise and organise a tow if needed. Comms would be by the dispatch rider. First port of call when tow arrives would be to the units own maintenance section. (Note, if own serial in the column has passed, they wait until a break in the column, they never enter another units serial). At the units own maintenance section (usually but not always at battalion), the vehicle will be evaluated. If fixable then and there, or within a few days it stays with unit. If a longer or complex repair is needed the vehicle will be passed back to either Regiment or even Divisional repair facilities. Even sometimes back to factory for rebuild. Crew is supposed to stay with the vehicle wherever it goes (except factory), but later in the war tended to stay with own unit due to manpower shortages. Tanks damaged in combat were slightly different. On the attack the Germans were very good (and quick) at recovering damaged vehicles. Where they end up was as above. On the defense, especially during a retreat, it was very difficult or even impossible to make recovery possible. Hence in the later war years the Germans lost many vehicles for minor reasons - lack of fuel, track damage etc as recovery was not possible. Info comes from Panzer Tactics by Wolfgang Schneider. @Alexander Challis Interesting, thanks. Actually a just _Archer_ based on a Valentine tanks and mounting a 17pdr gun, distinct from the 76mm though of similar calibre. Not using inflatable shells of course.
