The perfunctory "Thank you for your service" serves two purposes. One, it implicitly apologizes for the hypocrisy of running a worldwide military with constant wars with a tiny volunteer army. Two, it ingrains in the population a slavish obeisance to the military.

This "thank you for your service" grates on British ears. We love our armed forces, I served myself, but it sounds so false. I'm with Larry on this.....show you care, don't mouth platitudes.
@nicheman36123 жыл бұрын
I'm British - I agree with your point about that phrase although I wouldn't say I have an automatic love for armed forces as an entity and neither do most intelligent people I know. I don't think it's healthy to have a cast-iron love for any institution. Many vets themselves are pretty disillusioned with the infantilized view of armed forces especially given that society doesn't address all the problems with homelessness.
@eleveneleven5723 жыл бұрын
@@nicheman3612 You are mistaking a respect, and love, for the people who serve with those who let them down. Frankly, as soon as you said that most intelligent people you know do not have a love for the institution you completely missed my point and childishly implied stupidity on my part. You should be ashamed of that and cease indulging in mind reading.
@beingsshepherd2 жыл бұрын
I don't love Britain's armed forces. British people typically: help strangers in obvious distress, condemn murder on moral grounds, strongly dislike Tony Blair and his Iraq war, which is widely-known as an oil-grab.
