Living off grid in the winter can potentially be depressing so this is how I cure winter depression, commonly known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). I focus on the small things in nature rather than be overwhelmed by the bigger picture, the monotone white landscape that is common here in the Canadian wilderness in the winter. I love it but it does take some effort to see the beauty in nature after several months of quiet, solitude and scarcity of life. I talk about it in this video as I split firewood and stock the cabin with wood for the long, cold nights in the log cabin.
Thanks for watching!

Years ago I lived next to an older couple, Oscar & Esther. They had a hobby farm and were always busy planting, building etc. One cold and clear winter night Esther came over and with a twinkly look in her eyes told me to put on my coat and follow her outdoors. We walked through the woods and the moon was shining so bright we could see our shadows and the shadows of the trees. She showed me two big wooden boxes that were partially buried in the ground with clear plastic covers. She lifted the covers and when I looked in the boxes they were full of blooming flowers. There were Christmas Roses, Dutchmans Britches, Paper Whites, Buttercups etc. I always think of this when winter gets a bit oppressive and though Esther is passed on now she left me with a reminder that in the bleakest days there is still beauty and wonder just under the surface.

I see winter as nature's way of sleeping. It's clock moves slower than ours, a whole year is its day. We need to sleep about 1/3 of our lives, and nature needs about the same, to rest for awakening to another bright and fruitful "day." Keeping busy and appreciating those little things while nature is sleeping helps us ward off depression while nature "snores." Thanks for another visit with a very practical friend.

I know exactly what your talking about. I lived on the Canadian border for over 35 years, the cold, snow, and darkness can be depression. I had 4 small boys at the time, we did whatever we could to stay busy. School activities, snow shoeing, going into the woods and cooking out and sledding. Whatever it took to stay busy we did.

I have been concerned for you and Cali (and your wife when she joins you) as I have noticed that the intense cold is having an effect. The cold and extended grey days make me lethargic, apathetic, and is becomes more challenging to be positive. Getting ample B vitamins ( and D) helps along with bright happy colors in my surroundings and clothing. Using the aromas of certain essential oils in boiling water helps, too. Sweet orange and clove have been my favored choices. A few drops can be added to a carrier oil to use on the skin or a piece of fabric to wear as well. Thanks for sharing your wise insights with us, Shawn.

After being confined behind the walls for 40-60 hours a week for 26 years, it made me realize all of the small things that I was taking for granted such as the sound of birds chirping, the smell of grass, watching leaves fall from a tree, feeling the sun on your skin, sitting by a brook and just listening to it. I agree with you there are so many small things that are very important in our lives that we all just let pass by without even a thought. Great message!

Someone suggested bird feeders, and I second that. You might ask local butchers if they throw away suet, the hard fat around beef kidneys. Some do. Large chunks placed in mesh onion bags could be hung on some of your trees in winter, attracting chickadees and nuthatches. They could use the energy. Glad you have Cali for company.

The gratitude and hope that I cultivate during the winter season is what I compare to planting seeds for the return of growth and warmth (spring) yet to come. Fashioning tools or strategies that help combat depression specific to an individual is a matter of trial and error. I am glad you have found what works for you. When I was young, very young, I used to help my Daddy shovel snow to clear our driveway, so he could go to work and make money, so my Mom and I could eat. In the day, there were no plastic or aluminum "snow shovels" . We used the same shovels Daddy used to fill the furnace in the basement, after setting them outside for a while so the snow would not stick to them. It made this child very proud to help feed the family. It is only 55 years ago, somewhere in the early to mid 1960's, but, of course, it is, literally, a lifetime. Mine. So much to write here. So many thoughts. Your insightful observations, and your well spoken thoughts could inspire a book on the simple joys we sacrifice on the altar of progress. Late in the 1960's, my Daddy got a real oil burning furnace, and we got aluminum snow shovels. No more shoveling coal, and even for a teenager, the snow became much lighter. Shoveling snow is really a simple thing when one can retreat to central heating. But here is the thing you speak around. Going back in time to our origins, as far as is possible. Go out after a thick blanket of snow has left the insulation of sound as the main gift of nature. I embrace the silence. My father left this world in 1981. But his spirit is with me in the silence. And it reminds me that everyone and everything experiences the life cycle. Today's absolute stillness will be April's stirring and May's incredible explosion of life. The solitude...the magnificent beauty of nature's life cycle is the tonic which we use to get through these mid-winter blues. Yes... there is dirt under this snow, and you just watch.....it will provide. Thanks Shawn. God bless your family.

Then there are the conifers, smiling at the door like a childhood friend saying; do you wanna come out and play in the hut under my bows. Always drawn to the woods since a child, nature is a old friend that I truly love and respect all the facets of.

While living a similar life in MN, I remember being in awe of cloud formations, a moon rising behind the trees, the sound of the wind, the shadow of an owl flying overhead, and the occasional animal print in the snow. I cherished those moments. We raised two little kids, some chickens and goats, while having no electricity or water to speak of....we traveled to the nearest fire department with five gallon jugs every couple days for our supply. One year, while my husband was away for 3 weeks, I drove to the fire department only to find their spigot was frozen. That seemed like a low point for me until I gave in and drove to a nearby friend's home, who filled my jugs and invited me in for hot tea in their own warm cabin. The seven years I spent living that life provide precious memories that I wouldn't trade for the world.

I love winter in Canada. It’s beautiful, clean, calm and gives me hope that when it’s 25 below perhaps Climate Change isn’t as dire and immediate as We’re being told. But than I am retired now, living in a place with underground parking, lots of blue skies and sunlight coming in my windows and an airport that enables me to go see my children and grandkids in CA when I need the warm. Watching your videos reinforces all those wonderful things about winter. Thank you.

Shawn, you brought back some special memories with this video. Mine are of sailing on overnight passages on moonless nights in Mexico. The warm breeze and stars glittering on the water; the total aloneness and hyper alertness. Watching the constellations rise in the east and march across the sky to set in the west and the pod of dolphins playing in the boat's wake and darting around and around leaving their own phosphorescent trails in the water. Thanks for reminding me of how special solitude in an extreme environment can be.

Thank You For Explaining your views on how Winter effects you . I know this has been along heavier winter this year and it can be depressing. My Husband has Always been a Very Positive Person And I can say that’s what Attracted Me To Him . Even with the cold and snow he is always ready to do what needs to be done to keep his mind fulfilled , we go workout every day so that’s something he pushes me at times to do when I don’t necessarily want to ha ! I just turned 60 and my husband is also into his 60s so Now is the time to keep moving and stay focused as you said ! I Always Enjoy You Thank You Truly !

I see the four seasons as an amazing representation of life in general: The fall represent is the old or late age, the winter represents end of life, the spring represent a new birth, and the summer represents youth and middle age. And the cycle just continues forever. Thanks Shawn. Listening to you is very calming for me. I love your inspiring outlook on life.

We too have very long winters - so bitter cold this winter. Thank you for the "pep talk" b/c I needed it personally - we have another 2 months of winter or a bit more and one can get a bit down. I look out over the snow where my gardens lay in rest and think about what plants I will start in doors in 4 weeks time, feed my birds and appreciate and enjoy the root veggies I grew last garden season as I cook. So grateful for the time of rest, although long, but also grateful to have so much to look forward to when our earth awakens.

Good Morning Shawn - Thank you for sharing your insights on SAD. I think it is always difficult to tell how much things like that affect an individual. Listening to your views, I am not sure how much you are affected by SAD, but I hope that your coping skills are top notch and that you are not adversely affected by it. I retired 12 years ago and I no longer seem to be affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder. I sometimes wonder if it was somehow work related. Anyway, your 50K subs here on this channel and the 700K+ subs on the My Self Reliance channel are watching over you and enjoying your views, insights, thoughts, knowledge, skills, work ethic, craftmanship, cooking, scenery and of course Cali. You rock! The snow will melt. Have an awesome day! Viewer 8273 today at 7:00 a.m. Mountain Time.

The modern way of life, in the city, separates us all from the Natural part of our existence. Making a re-connection with nature may be difficult to impossible for many. A love and appreciation of nature and it never ending process, is one way to reduce stress and depression. Thanks again for your unique viewpoint.

Hello, Shawn, from Singapore. I’m 19 months in on a 30 month assignment, away from family and friends in the US. This loneliness, too, shall pass. I remember, after watching one of your first posts, that you’d tap out soon. Thanks for sticking it out and providing so many with entertainment and inspiration.

Shawn, I know I don’t live the life you do, nor have I ever seen that much snow in my life but the flip side of the coin is, even with the “lack of life” the beauty replaces it. I’ve never seen a more beautiful place than where you live. God gives us beauty and life in all forms and you have hit the mother load! Thanks for braving the cold to get outside and enjoy what you have, and most importantly thank you for sharing it with all of us!

I just came in from shoveling the drive, walk and deck. I'm so ready for Spring. My trusty Toro 5 horse single stage went kaput, so I'm re-familiarized with the old snow shovel for now. I'm no outdoorsman, but your two KZfaq keep my wife and I going. Please know that you and Callie aren't alone up there. You can't see us, but many are with you everyday. It's amazing what you're doing. Mike Bell Lake City, Michigan

Once again Shawn You amaze me by sharing all the things you’re experiencing daily, weekly, monthly and yearly; even the many sounds. What an encouragement you are for me and I’m sure others are encouraged too. As just one example proves... when I get up and make myself a cup of coffee, I noticing that I’m “hearing” all the same sounds I hear when you share your videos on your channels, even when you make a coffee. It’s even the same when I clean up, sharpen something, hear the snow crunch under my feet etc. It brings me pleasure when my mind automatically relates the same sounds I hear from Shawn James and My Self Reliance.

Thank you, Shawn, for your ensight into taking advantage of everything alive during Winter months like a glimpse of earth under the snow or enjoying wildlife. My husband and I go to a fitness center six days a week. We find exercise during the fall and winter is beneficial in warting off cabin fever during bad weather days. Endorphins released while exercising aids elevating us into a positive mood. We also live close to a bay and we enjoy spending time every Sunday feeding the Seagulls and watching the waves crashing on the rocks even though the majority of those Sundays are under gray skies.

That's why I love chickadees so much--they are so happy, and in the winter are so alive when so much seems silent and dormant. Make a bird feeder? Bring in those birds. I know when the sun isn't out much for days on end, I get SAD because I need the colors and the sunshine. And Cali will keep you busy, and that training dummy is so bright, and she's so nuts when you are shoveling snow--that's pure joy! It's good the inside of your cabin is so colorful and warm and happy--I hope that helps. I enjoy all of your videos, no matter the season. I hope you find enough to find the joy in this winter. Sometimes nature pulls a little miracle when we are feeling a bit blue about things. One time in Seattle, I don't remember what I was feeling blooo about, but I walked up to the road, and there off to the side was a really rare St. John's Wort plant, all riotously in bloom, and about the size of the top joint of my thumb--the rarity of this tiny plant just stopped me in my tracks, and I enjoyed seeing it. Most St. John's Wort are MUCH bigger, and this eeeeeensy little thing was just waiting to be noticed. It made me think of the photos you showed of the bark and the lichens and things. There are lots of things to see that nobody ever looks at. I'm glad you find them and look at them and find solace in them.

When you are in your mid 70's and snow, ice and the polar vortex confines you to your house, it helps to look across the street to the parkway and observe the birds and squirrels, struggling to find enough food to survive, and be happy that there is a stocked pantry and freezer, and a nice warm house. Plus I double up on my Vitamin D, and watch videos by you and your compatriots in the bushcraft field. As always, stay safe! HI, CALI

Good advice. I go outside every day even during the lowest temps during the polar vortex. I really enjoyed seeing a squirrel and 2 birds when the temps went back up.
