why dont you have a couple of hand carts---they generally can hold 4 boxes ,,and can easily be wheeled out---all warehouses use them

This is going to be a great series. Loving the incredible range of the discoveries so far. From the 1937 coronation to McDonald's Happy Meals from the '80's. Super cool. I've been picking up several unfinished pieces of new and vintage Norwegian handcrafts, but folks don't seem to want to buy them in their current state, so I think I'm going to be spending July and August with a needle and thread. Thank goodness I was raised by a mother who was old enough to be my grandmother and taught me some practical and handcrafting skills. Add to that, Norwegian Post just put up their rates, YET AGAIN, so I have to take into account every 100 grams that might add to the cost of postage. So, sadly, I'm going to have to unpick vintage pillows and take their pillow form out. I have a niche market for my stuff and we do what we have to do, right?
@paradimodi
@paradimodi Жыл бұрын
Oh, wow! That's crazy that you have to pay for every 100g differently! For example here in Latvia for small/medium parcels we pay by these weight segments 1-99g, 100-499g, 500-999g and 1kg -2kg.
@TheAccidentalViking
@TheAccidentalViking Жыл бұрын
@@paradimodi it isn't quite every 100g and depends on the thickness, too. When I sell an item, and it goes over a certain weight that puts it in its next postage cost bracket, I let the buyer know they can fill up to 'x' for no increase in postage and give them the option to buy another item. If it's a repeat customer, I'll pop in some Norwegian candy or Wettex as a gift, but, yeah, packing items that can go letter rate is getting expensive and things over 7cm thick and 350g costs almost as much as a full size parcel you can get tracking on, (~$35).

The saucer marked Embers is probably from the Embers restaurant chain in the US. They were based in Minneapolis and at one point had around 30 restaurants in Minnesota and surrounding states. They had been around for 65 years but the last one finally closed in 2021.

The 'CSM' on the wooden shoe would stand for 'Command Sergeant Major' which is the highest rank of a non commissioned officer (NCO). The 'Command Sergent Major' of the Army would be the higest position to hold... So you'd have the ranks of E1-E4 then it enters the Sergeant status... E5=Sergeant (Sgt); E6=Staff Sgt (SSG); E7=Sgt First Class (SFC); E8=Master Sgt or 1st Sgt (MSG or 1SG); E=9 Sergeant Major (SGM); E10=Command Sgt Major (CSM)..... Hope that helps if you come across other military gear or memorbilia. Looks like a GREAT find. Congrats!

The sailor outfit was CGIT aka Canadian girls in training uniform. The counterpart to Boy Scouts in the 60s and 70s. Those old bottles came out of an excavation probably. It was common practice to throw the bottles down the biffy and 100 years later someone builds a new house and oh look. Neighbor found a 1914 porcelain license plate in mint condition, that way.

Hate to tell you, but if you watch a YT channel called “Below the Plains” you’ll find out that most of those old bottles are actually dug up out of old outhouse pits. It’s actually a kind of neat channel to watch, and just so you know, 100+ year old, long buried, outhouse pits really aren’t nasty any more. Seeing the things he (can’t remember his name now that I need it of course lol) finds can be really interesting. Seen all the bottles Alexander has shown in various videos, but have never seen one of the “poison” ones though. Also seen many glass bowls, crocks, vases, etc. The pits were also used for rubbish disposal. Lots of lamp shades too. Each dig is an adventure and I’d recommend watching at least one.

Alex, the "sailor shirt" is actually a CGIT ( Canadian Girls In Training) uniform (also called a middy), an organization that's been around for just over 100 years. Looks just like the one my mum wore in the 1920s and I wore in the 1960s.

Hey Alex- after over 30 years in the “junktique” biz, 5 moves, and 8 “ downsizing “ blitzes What I found can be very helpful is having on hand about 4 to 6 hollow core flat faced ( usually ‘70s era-exactly like in the house you’re dealing with in this video ) interior doors. Including maybe 4 hollow core bi fold closet doors. One can stack way more boxes vertically- rather that use up all the floor space. Also, if one is using banquet tables for the sorting surface the angle braces get in the way of sliding the sorting bins in &out. After finishing up a horde/haul project the doors can just fit flat along the wall . I had about a 1400 sq ft house hold & garage packed up -like what you’re dealing with here, - stacked up on 5 steel garage shelving units with 3 hollow core doors - stacked up to over 13’ high. In a 10 x 10 x 16 high storage units. And still had room to sort. I disassembled the steel shelving and store the doors flat along the wall. Always love watching you !

At 29:52 I once found a vintage mellow yellow bottle fully intact missing the bottle cap that I was able to save right by my house (on my parents property technically). I rinsed all the dirt off and out of it then put it on my porch so my dad could do something with it when he got home. My dad actually ended up selling it for $20 to a local collector who collects bottles. My dad even told the guy who bought it where exactly it was found and that the house was built in the 1960's so that bottle could've been left outside since the person drank out of it in that specific spot where a fallen tree was. I still go there to hopefully find old bottles and things I can save for collectors but that fully intact bottle was worth saving. I even remember finding a fully intact vintage flower pot that my mom started to use after I brought it onto the porch. I love saving things wherever and whenever I can if it's collectible or worth it.

My Dad was a sign painter in the 1940's. He hand painted trucks, advertising signs, a billboard or two, and airport roof signs. He designed them, laid them out and hand painted them. In the 1950's he designed all the signs at Ft. Dix and McGuire Air Force Base. He had a crew that painted them. I don't think any survived as they were one of a kind and mostly out in the elements. He also did some artistic paintings on canvas, which family members still have.
