Current 2021 PSL vs Early FPK Rifle Review (The Romanian Dragunov In Detail)

This weekend, lets compare and contrast my old, early import FPK Dragunov from Cugir, Romania; with a current 2021 production PSL (PSL54/PSL54c) rifle from the same former Comblock factory.
We cover the accessories they ship with, examine parts changes/differences, and look to see if there are any changes when it comes to features and handling.
The FPK/PSL is essentually an overgrown AK47 chambered for the hard hitting 7.62x54R round. It has seen military service for nearly half a century, being deployed in the DMR role. While not an SVD Dragunov, it has a lot of history and qualities to recommend it. Variants have been imported into the USA since the late 1990s.

I assume that your FPK is imported by TGI. I heard that TGI actually built their guns in the US from build kits. Is that true? Also, do you have a problem with the scope falling off or losing zero when you shoot it? No matter how hard I tighten it, it still falls off. I'm afraid if I tighten anymore, it won’t slide onto the rail or it will damage the rail.

I bought one in upstate New York for 850 when I turned 18 in 2009. My friend told me there was a dragunov at the gun store and I rushed over to check it out. Maybe not something most people would recommend for a first time gun purchase but I have zero regrets, if anything I should have bought a second one since they could be had for less than what I paid.

Question. Do the new ones have a pistol grip bolt like Ak's have? The new ones may not have that and the only thing holding the thumbhole stock on is the shoulder stock tang with screws. I think military PSL's have the grip bolt and the shoulder stock tang like a normal AK. Just curious.

I just purchased one of the new PSL-54s from Atlantic Firearms. I was looking into buying a KNS adjustable gas piston for it. I was reading the literature and KNS claims the new PSL-54s, post 2018, and up have a smaller gas port which KNS claims to be a good thing to help with handling the heavy ball ammo. Apparently, the older PSL-54C was severely over gassed according to KNS. What are your thoughts on that?

hello, don't know if its still up for question : i own in Germany a 2020 Cugir PSL, here its called SSG . Upon reading about the heavy ball, i bought a KNS Piston - it is not needed in my experience, except you shoot very hot ammo suppressed. I own several AKs and they are very much overgassed. The PSL not so much but the experience is mostly with commercial ammo which in my perception is loaded rather mild. I will get some yellow tip heavy ball next week, hungarian surplus, and test that with the PSL. US has this stupid third pin law, we here have to have the Cugir bolts pinned to the carrier, so you cant get them out for cleaning ( to not interchange them with the military version guns)

Have an original 1976 surplus one and I like it a lot. The only downside is replacement parts are impossible to find and since the previous owner removed all the out of battery safety thinking it was an auto sear, after a couple of years I think I'll have to live with that. @@AKS-74U It's stamped, "F.A. CUGIR ROMANIA", M+M inc is the importer. Source is my own rifle and the information that accompanied it when I purchased it new from the dealer. Unfortunately I don't have a Romanian built PSL to compare but I'm fairly certain that CUGIR serialized parts like the bolt carrier for instance on rifles they put together. On the kit guns, all of these parts which are normally serialized were left blank, so that's one way to know for sure.

Recently picked up an io/interordinace ssg-97. Was nice seeing the milled parts/forged trunion. But was originally worried as it did not have a serial on the front trunion just 3 stampings. 78 on top of the left side. And a 2 next to the barrel pin, agian on the left side. No bolt hold open, just. Stock reciver reinforcement. Threaded muzzle and neutered bayonet lug. Compared to a newer cai import. Noticed the io had an imported barrel with the usual micro fins on the first 8" of barrel under the handguard. Vs a smooth barrel. To this day i have not been able to pull any data about it. We headspaced it. And it was g2g. Kicked less then a 2019 cai import by a significant factor. Didn't have any gas jets installed. Bought a kns but havent gotten around to installing it. Ejects very mildly on chinese 148gr surplus.

@@misha5670 I think it's mostly Com Bloc collectors who purchase the PSL and Zastava M91. The budget minded shooters will spend the $2K on assembling a nice DMR type AR10 build that scratches the itch for extended range shooting. If you think about it, it makes the most economic sense from a market support and supply point of view; spare parts, mags, ammo section, caliber selections (.308Win/7.62 NATO, 6.5 CM, 6mm CM, .260Rem, 7mm-08, .243WIN), modern scopes / optics, better accuracy (free floated hand guards / precision barrels / match grade ammo), and ect. Contrast to what a PSL is offering, limiting spare parts availability, average 3 - 4 MOA accuracy good enough for government work but not appealing to many civilian shooters, limited to 148gr ball (heavier loads damage the rifle so no match grade ammo for improved accuracy) with supplies of surplus going up in cost and Russian new manufactured imports now banned, mags are harder to acquire and more expensive, scopes and optic limitations (yes some modern scopes can be substituted over the factory LPS-4 or PSO, but still limited because no continuous rail system like AR patterns firearms). Rifle now comes with one mag.

@@MiGallagher The VEPR x54R was strictly made for a commercial market. Therefore it never went through any kind of military testing or hardening. For example, its extractor is a known failure point, and I've heard iffy things about its firing pin as well. Plus it uses single stack magazines; not double as with the PSL or M91 or SVD.

This seems like a really smart design. It looks like a decent quality version could be sold for 150 bucks if the weapons industry wasn't so weird with pricing.

I would say $700 to $1000. It’s a out of date firearm. And the optic is a cheap Chinese scope. You can get a great AR rifle that is more accurate. Easy to work on. And have a lot of accessories to chose from. Not to mention replace parts. That being said. It looks cool. That’s about it.

Good content it's awesome that your current is supposed to live in the past like a lot of the good channels it's awesome that you don't try to involve politics or worse yet laying to David Herrera type humor got to stop breathing the camera like that. Sounds like if Ian McCullough was a sex offender. Awesome research
