Steptoe Butte is truly a fascinating place, it's both beautiful and an interesting feature in eastern Washington that is mostly dominated by large basalt flows.
Steptoe may have been a 9000' peak of the Selkirk Mountains (part of the northern Rockies) at the edge of the old North American continent. It's made up of very resistant Precambrian sedimentary belt rock, which is over a billion years old.

And yes, I like this style of video. It doesn't all have to be show-stopping specimens, just exploring anomalies is super cool, and makes me glad I'm a subscriber!

i believe the palouse hills formed before the ice age floods considering that their are many other loess soils in the Columbia river basin that are around 2 million years old.

Detailed optically stimulated luminescence dating has shown that the uppermost layer of Palouse Loess accumulated between 15,000 years ago and modern times and the layer of loess underlying it accumulated episodically between about 77,000 and 16,000 years ago. A consistent sequence of normal-reverse-normal polarity signatures demonstrates that the older layers of loess accumulated between 2 and 1 million years ago. The vast majority of it is between 15,000 years and modern times.

I'm from the Okanagan Valley North of the boarder. I have traveled all around Washington state, the Palouse Falls area is beautiful. I was just talking to a friend this morning and recommending Palouse and Dry Falls as a must see as they travel South. I like a pretty rocks but knowing the history and story a rock can tell, makes it more interesting. It is amazing when you know that you are holding time in your hands. I like a good find and to learn something new. Thanks for your videos, hopefully I can visit some of the places you have shown us. 🐕🐾

Winter is a perfect time to visit those places, Palouse falls in the winter has sooo much ice and Dry Falls is way less crowed in the winter. This coming spring I got a growing list of places to go check out in the metaline falls area which isn't that far from you.

Steptoe Butte isn't the only "island" in this area. There is an interesting "island" down in a coulee lake not far from Steptoe in Bonnie Lake.

Beautiful! Also very interesting. Why is Steptoe Butte so much older than the surrounding area?

There's many areas of the Belt Super Group that you can see today in Idaho and Montana that range between 1450 and 1400 Ma (million years) old. Around here which at one time was the edge of North America everything is eroded, covered by lava, tilted and twisted. So pretty we only get a little snap shot of what it use to be like at places like this.

According to Wiki, the rock there is "over 400 million years old", what source is your info from?
@CurrentlyRockhounding
@CurrentlyRockhounding 4 жыл бұрын
Well 1.1 billion years old is over 400 million isn't it? I don't believe the wiki is correct. You can look at a number of sources such as this one from Spokane Community College which draws on data from USGS. users.scc.spokane.edu/ABuddington/G210proj/2007g1/?p=3
