Super Fly is the third studio album by American soul and funk musician Curtis Mayfield, released in July 1972 on Curtom Records. It was released as the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film of the same name. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, "Freddie's Dead" (#2 R&B, #4 Pop) and the title track (#5 R&B, #8 Pop). Super Fly is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.
Super Fly, along with Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, was one of the pioneering soul concept albums, with its then-unique socially aware lyrics about poverty and drug abuse making the album stand out. The film and the soundtrack may be perceived as dissonant, since the Super Fly film holds rather ambiguous views on drug dealers, whereas Curtis Mayfield's position is far more critical. Like What's Going On, the album was a surprise hit that record executives felt had little chance at significant sales. Due to its success, Mayfield was tapped for several film soundtracks over the course of the decade.

Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Curtis, James Brown, Willie Hutch, Barry White, Lonnie Liston Smith, Roy Ayers, Grover Washington Jr., Aretha Franklin, Sly Stone , Van McCoy, Patrice Rushen and George Clinton were music game changers in the sixties and seventies. Their music still gets you off your ass and makes your head bop back and forth. Great music never dies!

+Shah-Allah Shabazz The thing about it, you gotta be l o o k i n g for the good music today, cause it definitely ain't on the radio. I mean, I'ma assume it was an everyday thing to hear hear Curtis croon like this on W3SOUL or WBLS or KJLH back in your day. But today, music is not just a business...it's an i n d u s t r y. Most of today's music ain't art...it's product. So, while I do agree that music will never reinvent what artists like Curtis and Donny and Marvin and Stevie and James brought to the game, there are still a w e s o m e artists out there who will continue to tread waters these legendary old heads never touched. I'm talking about Jesse Boykins III, Georgia Ann Muldrow, Charles Bradley, Kamasi Washington, The Internet, etc. How d i d I find out about these artists? I dig, homie.

I could listen to that intro all day. just takes me back to the 90s. even tho it's before that it was released but it's when I first heard it. man to be young again with the knowledge I have.just miss when people put real emotions into their music. Kenny Williams. back than they was going thru something and had to go in the booth and tell it.

Curtis was the epitome of an ORIGINAL Soul Brother, followed by Otis Redding. Two brotha's PROUDLY to have sported the NATURAL afro hairstyle throughout their careers. Not given in to the conk and processed hair-do so MANY black male singers/ groups who did to adopt what was THEN, one of the MANY classification of being beautiful by black standards.
