I saw them live at the time and Sonja Kristina was a wonderful live performer, and we all adored her. Stewart Copeland later joined Curved Air before setting up The Police and wisely married her. With the vast wealth he made from Police he bought a mansion in England which Sonja Kristina used to promote acid-folk with annual free festivals. She also released an acid folk album later; nice to know that all that police wealth was used to promote grass roots music making by a load of folkies ;)

Reminds me of clubs in the 70s. UV lights, strobes, probably joss sticks, probably other things :) and playing Curved Air , Back Street Luv, and all that stuff, as we enjoyed it all

Keyboard Player Francis Monkman later joined the band Sky, an instrumental UK prog band that included classical guitarist John Williams (Who played the theme from the movie ' The Deer Hunter'). They are most famous for doing a prog version of 'Toccata' by Bach.

This was their one hit single - but songs I would have recommended first for a newcomer are Everdance and Jumbo (from same album), Midnight Wire and Metamorphosis (Jobson's big moment with the band). They released the first ever picture-disc (for their debut album) - but they didn't need publicity stunts, because it was novel enough in 1970/71 to be a rock band with a female lead vocalist plus synthesizers plus a violinist.

It's 52 years old and quite innovative for its time. But it's part of my childhood so I'm biased.

Sonja's vocals are much less restrained on the live version of this song (and others) on the 1974 album 'Curved Air - Live'.

Ethereal is the word I would use for the vocals. Darryl Way was the first violinist before Eddie Jobson. Saw the band live - fantastic! - when I was at Uni in the very early 70’s!

The track Young Mother is also one you should check out, from the same album. Hands down one of the best synthesiser solos of any song, played by Francis Monkman.

IIRC the band were named after the album A Rainbow In Curved Air by the American pioneer of experimental music Terry Riley. At one point Eddie Jobson was a member of the band before he joined Roxy Music.

I'm a Nightwish fan since 1998 (i have seen them live with Tarja and Floor 2 times each), and I think both bands are very different, however, I'm a super fan of Curved Air and Sonja Kristina (i really think her voice is perfect for their songs), I love progressive rock and female fronted bands, then from that same era i suggest to you: Babe Ruth Earth and Fire Renaissance

I'm anything but a Nightwish fan, awful ponderous drumming and overblown vocal histrionics, but I do like the musical agility and more intimate vocals of this. Curved Air recorded some much more ambitious music as well. The vocals come from an English folk tradition, rather than European classical, which was something which came more into rock music at a later date.

The vocal style seems to have roots in cool-jazz. The understatement of the delivery is very effective and musical. You should not compair this music with 40 years later.

This sounds like a demo. I've heard other versions of this and the singing is swamped in reverb

To strong a vocal would have ruined the feel of the song it would have overshadowed the music
