You think you got game? Well it's time to take your prep and paint skills to an All Star level.
Follow along with Wally Champ as he shows us how to properly prep and paint a leather basketball.
When it comes to a durable custom, we all know prep is the most important step. Taking short cuts may cause the paint to chip and crack off. Prep the surface, apply light coats of paint, then it's ready to hit the courts.

the technique here is ofc great. i'm a few days away from using stencils on my 1st pair - seeing Wally practice restraint & really go light with the airbrush to make the "ghost pattern" stars and basketballs is just what i needed to see, thx!!

I appreciate this video. I'm with an ABA team and we cannot find new game balls to buy. Apparently they are being bought up by collectors and having Dr. J autograph them. So we're looking to refinish one of ours because they are bafly scuffed. I've emailed the league to see if another ball can be used.

Sweet customization. For fellow DYI, I’d avoid putting much paint, and avoid a clear coat, on the nicer composite basketballs like the Evo. You lose that amazing grip with even a bit of paint, especially if putting on clear coat. Had to wet sand off most of it...

That tape you use, is that the same thing as electrical tape? Or just use any vinyl tape?

Does painting it affects it dribbling on any way like balancing and such? (asking out of ignorance no idea how if the coats of paints add extra weight to it) Id like to paint my personal one but I also use it and would like to keep using it, I also wouldn't mind if the paint comes off due to use.

Will this paint come off the ball and on to other surfaces? And what if I use a old, 3 year old ball that has some wear and tear?

No, As long as you prep the surface with the Leather Preparer or Acetone then the light thin coats of paint should hold up and not come off. Apply some Adhesion Promoter and Finisher for some added protection.

No it shouldn't effect the ball in anyway. Just make sure to apply really light layers of paint.

Angelus Shoe Polish Also, when prepping the ball with the deglazer or sandpaper or adhesion promoter, is that for airbrushing only or does that process go for any type of paint, since I’m thinking of using a brush and acrylic paint?

Can you substitute 2 thin with water or other liquid?

It's not ideal. Straight water may mess with the constancy of the paint. We highly suggest using 2-Thin for mixing with the paints.

Could you use chrome spray paint?

Usually the chrome speckles in most spray paints don't hold well. Montana chrome for instance is made to be used on walls and rough surfaces, it covers very well, but if you don't finish it you can swipe the chrome away. I suppose some formulas might work but it depends what the paint was made for in the first place.

Nice work, but that's not a leather ball. If you bought a $150 leather basketball, I don't think you'd paint it!

This is cool for display, but impractical for actual ballers cause in only a day we'd have that thing looking beat to shit ha

Just make sure to prep the ball well and it should hold up pretty well. We balled with it for a few hours on an outside court and it showed no signs of the paint coming off.

I'm painting the 10" basketballs and, I just throw on a few coats of Matt clear as a protectant. You just gotta remember, it's a basketball. Only if, who ever buys it, puts it in his room, will it stay looking new.

Painting b-balls is a good idea. However, that ball is NOT leather. That model has a synthetic/composite cover. Only the official Game Ball is real leather. Not hard to google that ball to know that. I’ve painted some balls before. This isn’t a very crisp job, for trying to teach others. AND... that ball cannot be played with, like the mascot demonstrated at the beginning. The paint will surely scuff and fall off. No protective finisher was applied in this video anyway. Lord. Painting balls is good for display only.
