Years ago, I adjusted my minimum coverage on my vehicles to a more substantial coverage. One month later, my daughter was in a head on collision (her fault) with injuries to the other vehicles occupants. We just barely avoided a lawsuit over the amounts of our coverage and there was some fraud involved. YES, do get more coverage when ever possible, drive safe, and give your friends & family a hug. Thanks Jason

Don't believe them. State Farm told us we were 100% covered, then when we had to file a claim, they refused to pay for any tools, money, jewelry, electronics, etc... saying we had to have a rider for those items... which was, of course, exactly what was stolen. Then they raised our rates even though they didn't pay out on the claim. Don't think this is only a 'State Farm' thing. All these big companies are the same.

my insurance let me do a plan on my different builds where they had me get it appraised after I completed them and usually gets appraised higher than what I thought it was worth because I did most of the builds and I never figured most of my time into it but anyways it gets insured for that amount which suprised me because it was not nearly as much as I thought it'd cost I'm talking from $80-$160 more a month and for what all it covered was definately well worth it

One thing I found is on a custom build (non-overlanding) depending on your insurance provider, they may consider your vehicle to be "modified" and only offer you liability coverage. I have ~15k in a resto-mod and my current insurer won't give me collision or comprehensive coverage.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUDGE.... Thank you ssoo much for mentioning this! I just built a camper on my truck and I never even thought to do this. I'm still underweight as I built with Extruded Aluminum and it's just a basic pop-up design, but I wonder what my rates would do as an RV... although, being in BC, one thing I learned is that rates never usually go down haha

Ah, yes, insurance. Something we never think we'll need until we need it. My 28-footer burned to the ground due to an electrical short. I had only weeks earlier sold my house and was temporarily living in my motor home. While the rig was covered by the insurance, my belongings were covered by my house insurance. The house I'd just sold. It's amazing how much you lose when you tally up the cost of replacing Gortex clothing, skates, hiking boots, etc. I lost 1,000s of dollars because the vehicle coverage did not cover them.

You are lucky out there in BC. Here in Ontario, it is very had to get RV insurance. I nearly bought a skoolie, but had to nix the purchase because it was very hard to get insurance, and, in fact, it wasn't until after I had cancelled the sale that one of the many insurance companies I had contacted got back to me and was willing to insure me. And I have a 30+ year clean driving record. I have also heard the same from other people in the RV/Vanlife/Skoolie community.

As a whole, i learned this installing after market stereos. One thing to look at aslo, is if u have to get a hotel or rent a vehical, make sure to have room there, a day or too isnt much. But greater stays or rentals add up. I put mine upto i thing 8000$ , yes very detailed info on rig helps, plus save recipes. Make up a binder of ur rig.

Something I learned when I first went full time is watch the amount of coverage for content, at least in the states. In 1994 using a full time insurance company the contents was $5,000.00. I had twice that amount in camera gear.

I would love to be able to build a fully kitted out rig. My income is meager, and I was forced to go another route. I am going stealth camper, I bought another GMC Envoy, and I am going to tour the province in it this summer. A Full size "Station wagon" with 4WD and an Inline 6 cyl gas engine. I already have full insurance coverage on it at about $900 per/year which covers everything and up to $5 million 3rd party liability. I am going to document my "road trip" although it probably wont be on your level, but it'll be something for "Krazy Mitch Adventures"

If only we lived in a world we didn't have to rely on ins. The industry, not the people, has contributed to the inflation of goods. The subsidies, from insurance payouts, are one of the factors. Needless to say, a Destination Rig does deserve coverage too. Lord forbid it get damaged.

I am wondering what your thoughts on solar power now that you have used for awhile. We are considering putting a small 300w to 400w set up just to assist in prolonging our off grid stays a little more. We are considering permanent mounting vs portable. Just wondering what you think on either set up
@MitchJohnson0110
@MitchJohnson0110 2 ай бұрын
RV Technician here: If you have the money to do it, do it. It cannot be understated how much they can potentially extend your off grid stays. But you really need to do your research. You need to know what the power usage in your rig is, and determine how much solar you actually need and to set expectations. 400w and good batteries on a rig that only uses batteries for lights, a water pump, and a few fans would allow you to realistically stay out for weeks or months if you set it up right. If you have a 12v fridge, rely on an inverter, etc. A cloudy weekend might end a stay unless you run a generator. Personally I'm not a big fan of the modern trend in RV and overland builds to run every single thing off of an inverter. including cook tops and heat. Not only is all that a very expensive initial investment, it's of course a massive power draw and requires a big battery and solar array. Also if one thing in that system fails everything stops working together. no thanks
@celticrider06
@celticrider06 2 ай бұрын
@@MitchJohnson0110 we do not off grid a lot but find ourselves sometimes a bit longer than we would like. We have a built in generator but only use as backup We are installing 2 new 6v golf cart batteries 250 ah each, replacing the 2 ,12v 100 ah. Can’t justify 1000 each for lithium We have an inverter but used mainly to run the fridge while driving. It runs on propane when off grid. So mainly lights, which are led, fans and inverter to run tv a bit. Basically to keep batteries topped up instead of running the generator or starting the engine. Torn between setting up portable every time or mount solid on roof

this ^ is good advice. I am currently snowbirding in the AZ boondocks in my 1986 Bigfoot camper. The camper has low DC electrical demands. I do not try to operate it like a modern house with an array of single purpose 110v appliances, TV’s, computers, freezers and fridges with 2 months of spoilable food stashed and outdoor stadium lighting on all the time. I operate all winter using 100watts of panels tilted to the low sun and 1200 useable watts of battery storage. Since the first week of Nov 2023 to now I have run a generator a total of 3.5 hrs during some cloudy days to charge batteries. In addition approx $200 in propane.
@MitchJohnson0110
@MitchJohnson0110 2 ай бұрын
@@flyovercounty1427 your smart for investing in a large battery bank before a bunch of panels. Most do the opposite. If you upgrade to 3-400 watts in the future you might not have to run the generator at all
@MitchJohnson0110
@MitchJohnson0110 2 ай бұрын
@@celticrider06 sounds like a good setup you got there. I agree on the lithium battery set up. Don't get me wrong, they're incredible. They can take thousands of discharges, are much lighter, etc. But the price is insane right now. Good choice on the golf cart batteries. A good set of AGM batteries a still a great choice as well. I think you guys getting 300 or 400w of panels just to keep the battery charged would be a great idea. I personally recommend Victron brand charge controllers.
