Push a button and it drops 12" to the ground or raises to full ride height. On board air allows tire filling etc. It tows beautifully even at 75+mph.

You should make some kind of lock mechanism so that if the airbags did break on you, you could lock it up off the ground so you can at least get home without it dragging.

This is what I'm concerned about. I have a motorcycle with a bagged rear end. When completely deflated, the rear frame sits on the tire. I'm paranoid that one day the bag will fail while underway and the frame will fall onto the moving wheel.

Interested in the pin and bushing area, as well as the spindle. Looking to do something relatively similar to an aluminum trailer for a Harley. I want to make sure the bushing I use works and doesn’t allow too much lateral (in out) movement of the wheel.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 жыл бұрын
Lateral movement is maybe 1/16 of an inch with bushing clearances, but it won't move any while driving. This is because there is so much force/weight on the assembly. This is a long bushing the entire length of the shaft/housing.

Well, I've been enlarging the video on my phone and found a half second of the opposite side operate to the down position exposing the "stub axle" and it welded to the pivoting swing arm. That tells me it coincides with what you said.... that the 1.75" pivot pin is all that's supporting the trailer and there is no axle going across because a short trailer would never drop to the ground fast enough. This trailer design is not complicated once you understand and see how it's built. Great for lighter loads of 1500lbs or less. I'd be worried with more than a ton on it. I propose to mount a second set of wheels on stub axles behind the existing. Mount them to a sliding vertical pipe with holes to pin and lock them at a certain height. Drop the trailer to the ground then lift it up and pin the tires to be two inches off the ground so if the air system fails, the second set takes the load as a safety net. You still get air ride until the back tires hit. Essentially, the wheels are playing the role of overload wheels like you see on dump trucks when the two axles get overloaded. BTW, THOSE two extra wheels can act as spares too.😊

Sixtyfiveford, could you supply pictures of the mechanism operating from underneath? I need to see where that swing arm attaches. Does it attach to the axle with a bushing around the axle? Or does it weld to the axle directly? Also, when it goes up, does it hit a stop? I plan to build this design because it is simpler than everyone else's. Thank you for a great video. There are some additional things I can do to give the trailer support if the airbag fails while in tow.

The bags are mounted correctly. If the fittings were on the bottom you run the risk of breaking them off with road debris.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 жыл бұрын
I know they're correctly mounted for a typical appication but I could run the air lines through the metal frame and they would be protected from road debris. Typical installation has the bag mounted to a frame at the top and the air line side doesn't move. So the air lines don't bounce/flex with movement. The way it's mounted here has the air lines bouncing and flexing and could fatigue them over time.

When the pressure is high and it hits a bump, wouldn't it top out every time the suspension returned?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. While driving at speed when it hits a bump the airbag compresses/raises the wheel while the trailer essentially stays on the same level plane. Once the tire clears the obstacle it returns to the same level where it is topped out. I feel nothing though the hitch while this thing tows and hits bumps unlike a conventional trailer. I fill the bags until they just touch the topped out spot, so every load is adjusted accordingly.

Def sweet trailer curious what happens if one side blows out on the road especially under a load
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 жыл бұрын
Both sides are linked so the trailer would drop evenly. These bags are more resilient than tires so it's more likely you would have a tire blow than a bag. If it did blow though and the trailer dropped at speed the back of the trailer would scrape on the ground but the tires would still contact the ground. There would be no reason you couldn't bring it to a quick stop.

I love it! How does it handle at speed with a full load and the air suddenly dumps because of a failure? Are you able to stop safely and in control? Hope you've tested that for your own piece of mind. And no shocks? Isn't that a bit of a nightmare on rough roads or stutter bumps? Maybe no shocks is normal for utility trailers (or trailers so short) - I'm not an expert by any means. Adding some to that - what would you call it - cantelever? - would be a cool KZfaq video (hint hint).
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 жыл бұрын
The air bags if dumped would simply lay the trailers back lip on the ground and it would scrape. The back just barely touches, so the wheels still have contact with the road surface and other than making some cool sparks and noise their should be no issue stopping it. The air bags and air lines are the same things use on all commercial trucks. Trailers don't run shocks as they are for occupant comfort and front end steering control where trailers have neither. People generally add air bags to a stock vehicle setup for even better comfort and ride control.

Any chance, you could give some basic dimensions of the arms?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 жыл бұрын
The arms are 2x4 rectangle box with an 1/8 wall. They were built around these tires. It has 3500lbs trailer hubs/axles stubs(1750x2) and 5000lb rated air bags(2500x2). The pivot point to the bag center is roughly 2/3 the distance as pivot to tire center. This give more leverage to the wheel and reduces the capacity of the bags so they are essentially equal at 1750lbs. But in giving the bags lower leverage ability it gives them more travel. So 8" of bag movement moves the tire 12".

Well HELL, look at semi trucks. They carry their fright/weight on "Air" IF they have air-ride.

it kinda looks like hacked together, why you would weld the pin in place? and this thing for sure needs some shocks because with an airbag alone you can't stop it from bumping

Trailers never have shocks. It doesn't bounce around at all.

@@sixtyfiveford "normal" trailers have rubber bushings in the axles (at least here in europe) wich are absorbing bumps and every bagged trailer i saw had shocks on, if you watch this video at 6:00 you can see it bouncing pretty bad kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5mokshint_LnJ8.html but to be fair maybe it doesn't have that much of an impact if you only have a smaller trailer with lesser capacity

DOT for personal use trailers is a hitch, safety chains, lights and 2 tires.... However, it's commercially built and all of the components are DOT.

? does your leaf spring trailer have shock? do semi trailers have shocks? do any tailers or towables have shocks for that matter
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 жыл бұрын
It rides smoother than a typical leaf sprung or torsion axle trailer. Coil springs are really the only springs that require shocks.
