An auto-suppression list is similar, but the main difference is that auto-suppression lists only work with defined email addresses. CLD works with email username or domains, essentially this behaves like a 'wildcard' email address, for example 'sales@*' or '*@competitor.com'. Also CLD can only be applied at an enterprise level, not at a BU, sender classification or sender profile level.
