Great video. Thanks. If you don’t mind a subsequent follow-up in the future, it would be interesting to see the actual murphy bed functionality of the Tochta mattress folding up and down. Also, did you have it made an inch or two shorter to improve the clearance for the rear screen? Anyway, sure looks like a dramatic improvement in comfort.

Hi Jeff - there is no change with the murphy bed operation, the center mattress pieces just pull out and stack on top like the "old" mattress did and the driver's side mattress is the same size as the stock one is/was. As for the size, here's a bit of trivia: my Hymer mattress (and it would seem, everyone else's too) measures in at approximately 56.5" long, which does cause the can't-get-past-the-mattress-when-putting-down-the-screen issue for some. However, in the Hymer brochure, it says the mattress is supposed to be 55.5" long (well, technically 55.5" wide, but I'm talking about individual pieces). If that were true, none of us would have that issue. lol. In any case, I matched the measured size of my stock mattress to keep everything snug. You could absolutely shorten it a bit to avoid the screen frame as it comes down, though. In my case, at 56.5" the screen frame just brushes the mattress on its way down. We all know how the tolerances vary in our vans (and possibly even the mattresses) so I'd use your own judgement as to how much you'd need to adjust.

I think a lot of folks would follow your video and upgrade their mattresses. Very nice review! Definitely film a follow up after a first trip to let us know the pros and cons of the new mattress. Not just comfort level, but how hot/cold it sleeps, does it show any signs of early wear or memory effect, etc. And do you know if Tochta also does bench seats? The bench on Aktiv is very firm and uncomfortable to seat after an hour or so. A better seat bench is probably even higher on my list then the bed, which I found not too bad (I am used to sleeping on very firm mattresses).

I suspect they could do the bench seat, but you'd want to check with them. The bench back has all of the contours in it that they'd need to map out. You can email them at help@tochta.com and see how they can handle that. :)

My partner and I have just put a deposit on a new Aktiv 1.0 and within days now read that work has stopped at the factory. Have you heard anything? We’re nervous about proceeding with the sale.

The Hymer community has been all over this. The good news is that Hymer appears to be starting to be responsive again. They were going through their audit after the Thor deal excluded the North American division and had put manufacturing and warranty work on hold. I would say to make sure you are getting a great deal on it, and not to worry TOO much just yet. The biggest question mark for us right now is warranty coverage and how it will be handled. At this writing, we don't know if EHGNA is going to continue on (I would guess they'd have to rebrand back to Roadtrek) or if they will become an acquisition target. Lots of speculation right now, and it's easy to get caught up in it. The biggest exposures we have are with the lithium battery systems, up to and including the solar and under hood generator. I would say first and foremost, to have your dealer find out the answers to the following: 1. Which revision lithium batteries do you have (H, or L1) 2. If L1, make sure the solar and Balmar (power regulator for the lithium batteries) settings have been set appropriately. Actually, for either answer they should double check the settings, but L1 does have new parameters. 3. Make sure the under hood generator shroud is not making contact with and damaging the wiring underneath (see my video about this issue) 4. Make sure the TSB for the pressure valve on the water heater has been done 5. Ensure the inverter is wired properly 6. Make sure the battery for the van (under the drivers floor) is tested good. If these sit on the lot for extended periods, the dealers tend to let them run empty frequently and they can become damaged. Lastly, join the Facebook group "Hymer Aktiv Owners and Wannabe's" as it's a great resource and a very active community.

Thanks for the detailed video... I have a 2.0 so I know I need the additional length but I'm curious how it is when the bed is folded up with the new thicker mattress? I like to keep the bed up most times and just bring it down at night.

I generally keep mine disassembled as well, keeping the passenger side cushion down and putting the rest (along with my pillows) on the drivers side. There is no real change, there is more than enough space below the cabinetry. I keep the three mattress pieces stacked with my pillows and a blanket on top of them without any problem.

Hi, Maury. Maury, Do you have any problems with the mattress interfering with the back screen? My mattress is a tight fit. Maybe poor quality control? Also, I have thought of cutting all 4 sections so that I could convert the bed to a twin size down the road. I wonder if the mattress would stay stable with that many cuts?

That’s a pretty common complaint, that the screen doesn’t play nice with the mattress. I could have gotten my new mattress cut a little shorter but I didn’t want the gap and to be honest, I don’t put the screen up and down enough for it to be much of an inconvenience. You could probably cut the mattress into different widths so that you have some flexibility later. If you took the Murphy fold-down part off, the driver’s side is probably juuuuuust wide enough to sleep on if you have a 2.0. A 1.0 might be a challenge unless you’re not tall or you don’t care about stretching out.

@@TravelingSolo Thanks. I stuff a sleeping pad between the back doors and mattress, at least in the cooler weather, so I think I could shave a little off the width. I'm 5 foot and I have the Aktiv 1. Lol. I'm gonna need a ladder to get in and out of bed.

I think it was money well spent. It maintains the sectional functionality so I can put the bed up, and it’s so comfortable.
