Great job I was looking for exactly this. Unique ways to customize my GameBoy thank you

I hope it goes well! I was a bit skeptical about the crystal spray, but I played this thing all week in the summer heat and it's holding up surprisingly okay! Just needs enough time to cure.

This came out beautifully! I used to modify My Little Ponies but I gave up because the product I was using to seal them wouldn’t fully dry/cure and I hated how they felt in my hand. Never would have considered watercolour over plastic or knew about the sealants you mentioned! I love how many different mediums and methods you experiment with - more than anyone else here on YT!
@YellowMelle Жыл бұрын
Gosh, you flatter me XD Yeah, I have a deep distrust for sealants, it's a bunch of different chemicals that either play well together or don't, and you don't know which is the wrong one until it's ruined your project already 😑
@EvlNabiki3 жыл бұрын
It turned out so beautifully!! I've been wanting to do this to my 2ds but I'm terrified that my sweaty hands will ruin the paint when I play, so I've been holding off 😭😭
@YellowMelle3 жыл бұрын
Yeah same, I'll have to actually play with this thing more often to see what happens. I told myself if it really wears that badly, I guess I'll just HAVE to buy one of those gorgeous wood-looking cases everyone is getting ;) edit: OOH, or maybe get one of the clear ones and decorate the inside... hmmmm

Never heard of anyone using watercolour to custom paint stuff, might give it a shot myself
@YellowMelle2 жыл бұрын
Oh boy, good luck! :D I was worried that the clear coat wouldn't be strong enough to protect against oily hands, but it's been okay! It would have been better if I gave it lots of time to cure first though...
@thompsonevergreen80062 жыл бұрын
@@YellowMelle have you tried something similar without the white layer underneath? Don't have that stuff so I night have to just do a white acrylic layer
@YellowMelle2 жыл бұрын
@@thompsonevergreen8006 Hmm the difference between gesso and white acrylic is that gesso is less shiny and a bit rough texture so stuff can stick. Watercolour probably won't sit on plain white acrylic very well. 🤔

Woah amazing, would not imagine trying watercolor for this😅 I'm practicing with acrylics to do this☺ Have you ever tried using "watercolor ground"?
@YellowMelle3 жыл бұрын
I've only tried the transparent watercolour ground and it was terrible! (there's a vid in the playlist of that), but I do hear that the regular watercolour ground is better. Haven't used it yet 😅

Hello! Late to the party! I’m about to embark and do something similar but glueing manga on the inside of mine! What glue did you use to secure the paper?
@YellowMelle Жыл бұрын
Hmm, usually I just stick with plain white school glue, or Tacky Glue, but since I seem to be using a brush, I bet you it's acrylic pouring medium on this one!

This is gorgeous! I'm thinking of making a custom shell myself and I never would have thought watercolor was an option. How has it held up over time? Is it still okay or did the paint deteriorate with time and use?
@YellowMelle7 ай бұрын
It's not 100% perfect, but it's okay. I think it matters how thick the gloss coat goes on and how humid the room, so mine has always felt ever so slightly tacky. That said, I don't play with it a lot, just at family dinners and for a week in the summer, so there's a bit of damage along the back edges where I grip it with my grubby dusty camping hands lol
@VelosoNarciso2 жыл бұрын
Ok. This looks good. A bit worried about how this mixes with sweety hand mid to long term, but im no specialist. Really like the colors, warm without being too much (again, im no artist)
@YellowMelle2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think the same thing! The clear coat stays sticky for a long time until it cures, so most damage is probably during that time. I took it on a hot summer vacation and played it everyday for a week, and it survived that, which is already impressive! 😆 It is not sticky anymore, so I think it will be okay for a good enough time.
@VelosoNarciso2 жыл бұрын
Good to know that. I hope it survives too. Keep up with the nice work, i guess.

Holy cow, that turned out great! I recently decided to modify my gameboy, and I'll be happy if it looks a fraction as good. Not hard to guess from my screen name, but Harvest Moon GBC is a bop IMO. Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages are amazing. And megaman series are good too.

What is the texture like? Does it feel grainy/bumpy?
@YellowMelle2 жыл бұрын
You mean now? Hmm, I suppose it feels a little "grippy?" I think I only did that one coat of crystal spray at the end, so the part with the paper collage and acrylic bee is still slightly raised. I suppose if I rubbed the back of my fingers against the gameboy, and then did the same to my living room wall, it feels similar lol
@Fortwaba2 жыл бұрын
@@YellowMelle Thanks for replying. I guess my concern is the paint feeling sticky. That would be an uncomfortable sensation. Edit: I forgot to mention that yours came out BEAUTIFULLY. It's amazing, really. I want to do this this weekend.
@YellowMelle2 жыл бұрын
@@Fortwaba Ah thank you!! yes, the sticky! Paint, especially the crystal coat, I think we only think about dry time, but it also has a much longer cure time. So it might be dried, but not yet cured, so it will be sticky for a while. So I took the gameboy camping a week after I painted it, so it was a bit tacky and the parts I was gripping were being slightly damaged by my handling. But if I pick it up now, it's not tacky anymore and I don't worry about it so much. Just takes a little waiting!
