Columbus Metropolitan Library has served the people of Franklin County, Ohio for 143 years. With its Main Library and 22 branches, CML is well known for signature services and programs like Homework Help, Reading Buddies, Summer Reading Club, Ready for Kindergarten and the Ready to Read Corps. The library’s Strategic Plan supports the vision of “a thriving community where wisdom prevails,” which positions CML to respond to areas of urgent need: kids unprepared for kindergarten, third grade reading proficiency, high school graduation, college readiness and employment resources.
In 2016, CML’s 627,000 cardholders borrowed 16.1 million items, made 5.3 million visits and took advantage of technology with 1.8 million computer and wireless sessions. CML’s Homework Help Centers had 95,000 after-school visits from K-12 students, and 26,000 Reading Buddies sessions of one-on-one reading practice with K-3 students. CML serves 10 public school districts and provides book delivery to 405 classrooms.
As a member of the Central Library Consortium, CML customers have access to the catalogs of 14 member libraries, totaling more than 4.5 million items.
CML was named a 2011 National Medal Winner by the Institute for Museum and Library Services for work in community service, the highest honor for libraries and museums. Columbus Metropolitan Library has been rated a 5-Star Library by Library Journal for the first seven years the magazine has published its industry ratings.
