Being a Minnesotan myself I totally get this.

We just drove up the ice road last weekend. We set the trip odometer to 0 upon getting on the ice and when we returned we had cruised over 100 miles. Very fun! Totally worth it. You need to pay $145.00 to get a pass. The folks up there deserve to get paid for how hard it was to create this experience.

Thank God! The hordes of tourists who want to visit Northern Minnesota in February will now be able to do so!

I can't believe it took the Americans that long to figure out the ice-road idea. We've been doing these for years in Canada.

The city of Bayfield, Wisconsin does the same thing so people can get to Madeline Island on Lake Superior. It is a great way to keep people moving all winter long. Glad they were able to get a road build in the NWA.

That's weird. Americans were allowed to travel through Western Canada if they were heading on to Alaska (a number took advantage of the loophole and were ticketed for staying too long in Banff and Jasper). Seems strange there was no such accomodation for these folks.

The ice road from Angle Inlet to Warroad has been plowed in the past. But not because of a virus. It's much faster than through Manitoba to the highway, down to US and then east. There are no towns along the way, if I remember correctly. About two hours

Always wondered about that place. I drive by it all the time when I used to cross the border at Warroad, MN.

Yup we have to do this alot in northern Canada I'm surprised you took the long way around for so long we also use drone delivery and drones to transport stuff back and forth to save money.

Why not boat people in the summer ? Going through customs is a hassle anyway.

Yeah it would be rough living in border communities like Angle Minnesota or Point Roberts for that matter. Still no telling if or when the canadian border will reopen again. You know, I wonder if the US government and Canadian government could just make Angle a part of Canada. For residents living in Angle, they could be given dual citizenship. They could probably make Angle a part of Ontario. If people need to into the city, they could probably go to Winnepeg instead of Minneapolis in the meantime. Point Roberts could probably become a part of British Columbia too (residents there could be given dual citizenship). Not sure if that idea would work, but assuming the covid stuff isn't going be going away anytime soon, that could be an option. Alternatively, the government probably should do more to offer assistance to those communities.

they should buy one of those tour boats you see in canal systems and basically ferry their customers into the city this would allow them year round access to cottages and also bring in customers and food or what ever else they need without having to go through CANADA just a thought

That cost is asinine. The state should pay for that under what should be considered emergency circumstances. Although I guess that’s what you get for living in a place so isolated without an airport that requires you to rely on another country.

Funny how they report that Canada closed it's border.....so did the US to those of us on the north side of it.

Washington state has the same issue with Point Roberts. It is a small peninsula that juts from Canada and crosses the border. Canada and the WA governors office, within the last 2 weeks, announced residents can now drive around to the US without a COVID test. There is an emergency passenger ferry from Bellingham as weather allows. The ferry runs Tuesday thru Friday 4 times a day, reservations required. It is being provided free of charge by the Port for residents of Point Roberts.

So are they doing that this year (2022) ?

This piece of land is really more trouble than it's worth. It was a survey mistake and it should really just be in Canada. It's 100 people there. It wouldn't be hard to let them decide which country they would like to permanently live in if the US just turned that land over to Canada.

Once melted obviously its a bit easier to figure out transportation as its a lake people are bound to have boats but may take some pre planning to get what they need that they cannot transport by boat to where they need it or get a landing craft or barge to haul the bigger stuff it looks like they are but i hope there taking safety into priority as ice crossings can be problematic not as simple as plow and go

govt prb shut them down already after this aired in tv.. and it is prb illegal for them to charge for a pass, they dont own the lake.. there are plowed lakes here in WI during the ice season and they cant charge anyone to use it(only donations are accepted)

A little like Point Roberts, in Washington State. Should just cede it to Canada. Might have higher taxes, but you would at least have universal medical. Though I guess your visitors would then be “foreigners”? No easy win here

Even though it made a great video, I feel sorry for those people that are cut off from everything because of the weather. I grew up in subzero temperatures and 3 feet of snow and ice. So I know what they are going through. Thanx for posting this.

I wonder if those folks who seem to own a cabin up there are allowed entry to buy food or only year round inhabitants. Ownership seems as permanent as living only there imo. I wonder if there's a matching disconnect piece of Canada dealing with the same hurdles.

That is cool. As was mentioned below this is a pretty common thing in the Northwest Territories...we did it in northern BC as well. The logistics of an ice road are fairly straightforward, but the cost would be a big gamble...good on the folks for taking the leap and doing it. While I'll accept that a (pretty much) closed border is necessary for both countries to deal with COVID, Lake Of The Woods - along with Point Roberts here in the Lower Mainland, and I am sure a bunch of other places - is a prime example of where some latitude, cooperation and intelligence on the part of both federal governments should have been demonstrated. As recently as September, Americans traveling back and forth betwixt Washington and Alaska were able to drive through BC and The Yukon with strict time frames and rules in place....why not the same for Minnesotans? Sigh Can't wait for COVID to be behind us....Lake Of The Woods is still on my road trip bucket list Sigh
